Absolutely, we want Adrien Brody, Marcia Gay Harden and Denzel Washington like surprise victory. Not winning in precursors, but surprisingly winning at oscars.
Surprised you didn't include Olivia Colman's shocked reaction and speech on this list. Plus the other nominees reactions when her name was announced. Especially Glenn and Melissas reactions. 😂
I’ve read Anna Paquin says she wishes she hadn’t worn that hat, but I love it. She didn’t think she was going to win, so she wore what she wanted to. I think it gives her acceptance speech a touch of class, and innocence. I’m glad she came back to acting as she is such a terrific actor.
I love it too. I mean it really fit for the fashion and style of girls her age at the time. I know because she's only two years older than me so I was rocking similar clothes. I read a while ago that she keeps her Oscar in her closet and when she won the Golden Globe for the first season of True Blood I was like is she going to put it next to her Oscar.
Brendan Frasier is another PERFECT and enjoyable example of someone who really wanted to win but didn't expect to, and his reaction after being named makes me tear TF up ❤❤❤
@@55555gino WTF are you talking about??? He wrote, directed and starred in that movie, which he wrote about his own father's experiences in a concentration camp... and you think he hates it? Nice try, clown. 🤡
My favorite Oscar reaction of all time is not from the winner; it's how both Meryl Streep and Chaz Bono react when Cher wins for "Moonstruck." They are both so happy and excited for her.
I also love Julianne Moore’s reaction to winning best actress for Still Alice. She was on her 5th nomination and when her name is called, her face just says it all: “I did it.” Her win never fails to make me cry.
My favorite is Olivia Colman's reaction and that of her colleagues Emma Stone, husband, director, etc. Even though I wanted Close to win, one has to appreciate that wonderful reaction and subsequent speech!
I also love the moment Anna Paquin won- and to see Holly Hunter how she is SO excited for her is awesome..... it's funny that they interviewed Anna on the Red Carpet before the show & she kept saying "Yeah, I mean, I'm not going to win, but..." & then she DID!!
I think a list of best presenter reactions would be fun. I always think of Julia Roberts saying “I love my life!” before announcing Denzel as the winner for Training Day.
Three 6 Mafia's Oscar win for Best Original Song back in 2006 is also one of my favourites. The way they jumped around running to the stage after Queen Latifah announced the winner, the Oscars has become the BET Award where the director of the show seemed quickly told the camera crew to shoot all the black people (except George Clooney) at the audience during their speech 😂😂😂
What about Cuba Gooding, Jr's win for Best Supporting Actor for Jerry Maguire, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck winning Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting and Olivia Colman's Best Actress win for The Favourite and how is it that Roberto Benigni's Oscar win is not in the Top 10? Brian Rowe forgot to mention the movie that won Geraldine Page her Oscar was for The Trip to Bountiful.
I think Emma Stone’s reaction was more about losing to her friend Lily Gladstone who she was rooting for, and knowing there was going to be backlash at Lily’s loss. She said in her speech she was talking to Yorgos a few days prior and told him, “I was worried something like this might happen.”
I also love Meryl Streep’s reaction when she won for The Iron Lady. She did not think the Academy was going to give it to her again. Her speech was so great too.
Great top 10 list, Halle Berry's reaction & speech still hit me deeply ❤ Though I was hoping to see Michelle Yeoh in here as there was still a 50/50 shot of a win/lose situation so I think there was genuine surprise and happiness for another deserved & historic win.
I love that they began showing the nominee "boxes" in 1971 so that their reactions could be captured (for some odd reason they didn't do so in 1981). Though the cameras started panning the nominees (and winner reactions) back in 1960, it would have been fascinating to see their reactions on camera back in the earlier days.
@@oscarman42 Thank you to @iagoteles9627 as well... without their comment, I wouldn't have found your channel (and subscribed to it!) Keep it up Oscar man!
I’m glad you mentioned Timothy Hutton. His performance is fantastic and very much earned his award. A terrific actor, his work in Leverage is layered and shows his fantastic range.
Love how a lot of your list showcases past award seasons where the excitement was there. It’s almost missing in modern seasons. Thankfully #10 spot brought it back for me! What a fun night that was!
I still cringe when I think of Adele Dazeem cracking that high note on Let it Go. You can hear the orchestra speeding up and I think she was trying to keep up and didn’t get a good enough breath.
I actually think Emma’s reaction isn’t about her dress, but about the fact that she not only thought Lily Gladstone was going to win, but she truly wanted Lily to win. I think about how Emma reacted to Lily wining GG.. I could be wrong but watching them all award season, I thought Lily was going to win too!
I wasn’t even mad that Lily lost. Even though I was rooting for her HARD all awards season I was also rooting for Emma. Even though I thought Lily gave the better performance. Emma’s performance in “Poor Things” reminded me of Charlize Theron in “Monster” (the greatest performance ever.) Lily’s time is coming I don’t think that she’s gonna get nominated for “Fancy Dance” but at least it’s already a critically acclaimed performance after her historic nomination. She’s going in the right direction and she’s being treated like a leading lady as she should be. “The Memory Police” better be her Oscar moment.
I think it's a bit of this too. I don't think she was mad that she won after the dirt settled but it was the initial that oh crap I will forever be the white girl that won over the first Native American woman nominated and not only that but it's my 2nd oscar. Like think people wouldn't have been as annoyed if it wasn't her 2nd one.
Halle Berry win was the most unexpected and the most surprising that even the great Glenn Close babbled 'enemy, enemy, any, EMMY!' i remember it vividly I was laughing at her jumbled words live.
the late Dr. Haing S Ngor winning Best Supporting Actor for THE KILLING FIELDS 1984. He could not believe that he came from also Surviving the Killing Fields of the Khmer Rouge HIMSELF then becoming an Oscar Winner portraying a real survivor Dith Pran.

Sweet Baby Jesus, I think Binoche was the heart of " The English Patience". The scene at the church, the scene when her friend dies... the scene with morphine at the end... Holy Macaroni, San Giovanni of Prada! Enough for a best Actress win.
Idk. My personal favorite Oscar win was Ben Afleck and Matt Damon for Good Will Hunting. Their energy was infectious and it made everyone so happy for them.
Both, actor and actress, undeserved for the year. They only won because of the whole controversy the previous year that showed a lack of recognition of people of color, and I remember that my black friends said so, during the telecast and that it was a bittersweet victory, since, they would have never given it to Berry and Washington for those performances.

Not necessarily worthy of this list, but my favorite is Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard for Best Original Song from Once. Irglova did not really have a speech, she only stepped up initially to say a quick thank you. Timothy Hutton was lead in Ordinary People, so annoying when they move young actors to supporting because of their age. Tatum ONeal was in every scene of Paper Moon and they put her in supporting at the expense of costar Madeline Kahn who was more deserving and was actually supporting!
My favorite one was for sure Ke Huy Quan winning for Best Supporting Actor in 2023. The emotion when Ariana DeBose reads his name, and all his speech... it always makes me cry.
Whoopi was absolutely hilarious in Ghost! I always look forward to her scenes while watching that movie, and I crack up laughing every time! She and Jamie Lee Curtis were truly deserving of those supporting awards.
