I agree with Marion Colliard winning best actress for La En Vie Rose, her performance is haunting and unforgettable.
It remains her best performance.
Her and Charlize Theron have my two favorite performances of all time it didn’t even look like they were acting. They were THAT convincing in their roles.
If she wouldn't have won for that performance it would have been like not awarding Charlize for Monster or Meryl for Sophie's choice... She was exceptional as Edith Piaf, tehere are scenes from that movie that still haunts me....

The reason why Joe Pesci’s Oscar speech was so short was because he really didn’t expect to win so he didn’t prepare
Bruce Davison's devastating performance (which would have had my vote to win though probably not nearly as watched or as appreciated as Goodfellas) in the AIDS tearjerker drama Longtime Companion was most likely in 2nd place with Supporting Actor wins from the Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Awards, National Society Of Film Critics, and New York Film Critics Circle Awards.
I've never been sure if he should have won Supporting Actor that time. (Probably because I watched Goodfellas, and, while I admire the quality of the film, it's not my favorite).
But I have huge respect for someone who doesn't mess around on stage, is straightforward, and then leaves right away. Too many people take the time to share their weird thoughts or promote something. I like the people who are in and out, and I like to think I'd be the same.

Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Absolutely brilliant acting, pure class, well deserved.
Much like Beatrice Straight, Joe Pesci could've won the Oscar for that bar scene alone. He was so menacing and convincing, I thought he was going to jump out of the screen and hit me. But, of course he's great in the entire film. That's a very deserved Oscar, if you ask me.
Really glad you included Marlon Brando in THE GODFATHER. Today that's become such an iconic and often-parodied character that people sometimes forget how great it is. Today we hear about the transformative performances of Heath Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix, and others, and Brando here was the first true example of that.
I'm kinda surprised u left out the Great Kate Hepburn for her indelible performance in The Lion in Winter! 😂

Ugh yes thank you for giving some attention to Bette Davis’s performance in Jezebel. It’s crazy to think even though she won two Oscars that she didn’t win for her most iconic performances (All About Eve, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, Now Voyager).
You are absolutely right on that one. Judy Holliday beating Bette Davis in All About Eve and Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard...give me a break! :) Anyway, time has told us which performances remain iconic to this day. And I'm fairly sure that given the chance to do a re-vote, some legendary performances would get their due all these decades later:)
Judy Holliday delivered one of the best comedic performances ever in American cinema history and deserved the win… Same with Anne Bancroft for The Miracle Worker who delivered a tour-de-force performance… Bette’s losses in both these instances were exaggerated by herself in interviews, which made some people doubt the rightful winners…

I’ve felt for a while every actor’s speech ought to thank Daniel Day-Lewis for not making a movie that year.
Not only that Joe Pesci's Oscar win for Goodfellas was one of the best winners in Oscar history, his short speech is also one of the best and funniest that I've heard in the Oscars show. Short, plain, simple, I wish somebody these days could make an acceptance Oscar speech as short as Joe was, at least 5 words is enough 😂

Often overlooked...Shirley Booth in Come Back, Little Sheba. One of the best wins in the Lead Actress category. If you have never seen the film, I highly recommend that you do.
I can’t stand her baby talk through out the movie. It’s so grating! How did she win the Oscar for that?
Cotillard should have had another nomination for Rust and Bone. She did make the nomination for Two Days, One Night but she was haunting in Rust and Bone and made the nominations at Golden Globes , BAFTA and SAG only to miss at the Oscars. Carey Mulligan and Cate Blanchett have both remarked on her ability to be so real and present in each role as if she weren't even acting.

I completely agree. However I understand why he was overlooked. You already had Gyllenhal, Oyelowo, and Fiennes getting snubbed. There was just no room for Teller.
Im so happy they didnt give jennifer Lawrence another oscar for american hustle. She was miscast. She was too young for that role. She looked like she was playing dress up in her mum clothes.
Amy adams on the other hand looked the part. She looked grown and sexy with those low cut gowns
I thought that I was the only one who thought that she was miscast because I could had seen maybe Penelope Cruz in the part of the wife.
Amy Adams is a gorgeous woman. And in no film is it more evident than in American Hustle. If anything, she could be the sole reason for watching the movie:)
Lawrence was fantastic but she looked like Bale’s daughter.
Jennifer Lawrence is so overrated (and well connected) I was also shocked Lupita didn't sweep the season.
When you named Jezebel, I thought, Huh? She has so many better performances! And then I remembered the Of Human Bondage and Judy Holliday/Gloria Swanson/Bette Davis debacles, and realized that she didn't win for any of her best performances. You named them--Of Human Bondage, Now Voyager, All About Eve, and Baby Jane. All performances for the ages.
She is also great in The Little Foxes.

In 1942, Davis was defeated by World War II. Nothing can convince me the wins for Mrs. Miniver and Greer Garson weren't motivated by politics. Not only does Bette Davis give a much better and more interesting performance, but Now, Voyager is a better film, IMO. While there are a couple of exceptions, romantic dramas don't generally win Oscars, no matter how good they are. They're not regarded as "serious" enough.
@@kelleyceccato7025 I see what you mean, but Greer Garson is amazing as well in Mrs Miniver:) The film I also like a lot, quite a lot more than Now, Voyager actually:) That's just my opinion, of course. But where you are spot on is when you say that Davis is remarkable in it. She was on an unmatched roll from 35 to 45:) And then she laid down a performance for the ages in All About Eve, and in case it wasn't enough, a bonkers one in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, for good mesure:) What a legend she was/is!:)
@@Bobmacca64 Miniver is a good film; it just doesn't live in my heart in quite the same way. (I have a huge soft spot for a high-quality romantic drama, because we see them so rarely in contemporary cinema.) However, in 1942 Garson made another film, Random Harvest -- another top-notch romantic drama -- in which she gave a performance that's just as sympathetic as her turn in Miniver but, I feel, rangier and more complex. Her work in Random Harvest went unacknowledged by Oscar.
Great list! I can't remember everyone from the other list, but here are a few who definitely make my top 10 that I don't believe you included:
Jimmy Cagney- Yankee Doodle Dandy (playing against type phenomenally)
Katharine Hepburn- The Lion in Winter
Sidney Poitier- Lillies of the Field (I would prefer A Patch of Blue or In the Heat of the Night, but this is still a great performance, it's a Bette Davis situation)
Jane Wyman- Johnny Belinda
Vivien Leigh- Streetcar Named Desire
Sophia Loren- Two Women
Sophia Loren's deserves more attention than it gets for sure.

J.K. Simmons was just so phenomenal in 'Whiplash'.
Whiplash is such an intense film. “Caravan at 300” became an inside joke for me and my husband despite the terror JK Simmons instllls in us all. Fortunately when my music teacher counted off Caravan too fast we all had a laugh and there was no PTSD

Tbh i would have gone for brenda blethyn in 1996 instead of frances. Brenda’s performance is the most heartbreaking performance i’ve ever seen.
I thought Julie Andrew’s performance in “Mary Poppins” was delightful but I wouldn’t place her in the honorable mention of the best ever Oscar performance. I would prefer Anne Bancroft in “ The Miracle Worker” or Sophia Loren in “Two Women”.

I have yet to see Bette Davis in Jezebel, or Dangerous for that matter, but I absolutely love her in Dark Victory, The Letter, Now, Voyager, Mr Skeffington, All About Eve, and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. She was such a great actress:) Her eyes alone were Oscar-worthy. Keep up with the great videos! :) I never tire of Oscar-related content.

@@kelleyceccato7025 Bette Davis and Claude Rains are both fantastic in this film. And yes, they worked brilliantly together. So much so that Bette Davis called Rains her ' favorite co-star':) I think it's partly because of Rains' amazing talent, but also because she didn't feel ' threatened' by him. It's well-known that miss Davis liked being top of the bill, and boy, was she ever! :)

So glad you included Frances McDormand for "Fargo." It's one of my all time favorite films, with so many great performances, but Marge Gunderson is its heart & soul. McDormand, like Nathan Lane in "the Birdcage," shows the difference between playing a character who fits a stereotype and playing a stereotype. She's the quintessential Minnesotan, but McDormand finds the depth and humanity of Marge, especially in the interactions with her husband, as well as the dogged determination to follow that very clear set of bread crumbs to the not-so-bright kidnappers. The topper for me is her monologue in the car after the infamous wood chipper scene. Her delineation of all the trauma and pain the criminals caused, all for some money, and ending with "and it's such a beautiful day" - kills me every time.

So glad to hear The Lost Weekend shout out. During lockdown I watched every Best Picture winner ever and it was probably my biggest surprise. I did not have high hopes and it was truly a masterpiece. I didnt rank my favorites but it would easily be top 10
Great story. I also watched quite a bit of the Best Picture winners( nowhere near as many as you have:) and this one, along with some little known films today, such as Gentleman's Agreement(1947) by Elia Kazan, have really stood the test of time I think. And they manage to be both very much of their era, but also timeless:)
Great picks, Brian! So many strong performances in that top 10 that still hold up well and live in cinematic immortality deservedly. However, in the case of Bette Davis, this quote from Katharine Hepburn applies to her the most, "The right actors win Oscars, but for the wrong roles". This applies to her so well. Instead of Dangerous & Jezebel, she should have (also) won for Of Human Bondage, The Letter, Dark Victory, The Little Foxes, All About Eve, and/or Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? Those would be easy all timers to put in any list. Thanks for this great list, Brian. So looking forward to the Lupita Nyong'o Oscar win video coming up too, such a strong performance and she heavily deserved a second nomination for Us.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a video on Peter O'Toole. I just rewatched "The Lion in Winter" where he played Henry II with Katherine Hepburn as Eleanor of Acquitaine. I love Gregory Peck but I think O'Toole should've won the Oscar that year. He was also good as Henry II in "Becket" with Richard Burton. Esther S. (PS: I LOVE your videos.)
The year that Gregory Peck won, O’Toole was nominated for LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. He lost to Cliff Robertson for CHARLY when he was nominated for THE LION IN WINTER. I really liked Robertson in CHARLY; he should have had a bigger career.

I love Gregory Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird and all but Peter O’Toole was right there.
Also, spooky, I was just watching La Vie En Rose today, definitely one of the best performances in any biopic film.
Also also, how could you not include Harold Russell a second time for his 1947 win for Best Supporting Actor in William Wyler’s The Best Years of Our Lives? He was a disabled veteran who lost both his hands in World War 2, played a character in the same position in that great film, and went on to win both the competitive and an Honorary Award that year.

Anne Hathaway and Monique delivered 2 of the best Supporting Actress performances ever. Hilary Swank deserves to be here for both of her lead actress wins. For leading actors, I know it's controversial, but Rami Malek delivered on Bohemian Rhapsody and was the heart of the film.

3rd: "Now, Voyager"
4th: "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"
Thank you, thank you, thank you for mentioning "Now, Voyager," my favorite Bette Davis performance. I always think Davis' sympathetic performances are underrated, and this one is undoubtedly the rangiest. I like Greer Garson well enough, but her win for "Mrs. Miniver" was more about politics than quality; besides, she gave a much more interesting performance, IMO, in "Random Harvest" that same year. (How interesting that my two favorite romantic dramas of all time both came out in 1942.)
I'm also grateful to see Gregory Peck's magnificent performance in "To Kill a Mockingbird" on this list, since I've been hearing a lot of "O'Toole was robbed!" smack. I also agree about the b&w films of the 1960s; "The Miracle Worker" and "A Patch of Blue" are among my other favorites, although, for me, nothing comes close to "Mockingbird."
O'Toole was robbed later, not in early 63:) How could Rex Harrison for My Fair Lady in 65 win over the magnificent performance of O'Toole in Becket ?! Hell, Richard Burton in Becket as well, and Peter Sellers in Doctor Strangelove were both more deserving than Harrison, in my opinion. He's good in the film, but man, he doesn't show the same range as the other 3 I mentioned. O'Toole gives everything he's got in Becket and never misses a beat. And Sellers in Strangelove, in a triple role is nothing short of legendary. I'm sure in hindsight it's one of those years were the winner has been eclipsed by the other nominees:)

I actually think that Jezebel contains one of Bette Davis’s most beautiful and subtle performances on film and it was the film that made her a box-office star, after all. It’s my mom’s favorite Bette Davis film and it’s the first of her great “women’s pictures”. For the first time in her career, Bette Davis had a truly great director, William Wyler, whom she credited with making her “a far, far better actress” with his meticulous, tough direction of her in Jezebel. Even Tom Hanks recently told Ben Mankiewicz in a TCM interview that Jezebel contains one of his favorite performances ever recorded onscreen. I personally dislike horror films or Grand Guignol, so I think Jezebel is a much more deserving Best Actress win for Davis than Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? would have been. I personally think she was better in The Letter (1940) than the winner Ginger Rogers in Kitty Foyle & also in The Little Foxes (1941) than the winner Joan Fontaine in Suspicion. 1950 was a tough year because I think Gloria Swanson deserved the Oscar for Sunset Blvd., even though Bette Davis was a natural as Margo Channing in All About Eve. Thanks for including Bette Davis. She deserved more than 2 Oscars, imo.
I also find myself thinking about the Joe Pesci performance from Good Fellas. It's mostly because I have a cat that reminds me of him. My cat is very feisty and super aggressive. The cat also reminds me of Salacious Crumb (Jabba the Hutt's pet from Star Wars VI), so I don't lnow what to make of that combination.

When you say something is an "all-time win", it would seem to me you're saying it's absolutely certain to you that the right person won. I can't say that about Peck in TKAM. Peter O'Toole is, to me, as good or even more impressive in "Lawrence of Arabia". Even on the alternative scale of all-time awards that gave a long-deserving person an Oscar, which this did, it also goes negative, cuz Peter O'Toole never won an Oscar, so giving one to Peck somehow took it away from O'Toole. It's all rather sad and feels cosmic. You should probably do an independent video about the matter.
In terms of "Mockingbird" vs. "Lawrence" and the lead performances therein, I think a lot of it comes down to which kind of movie you prefer: a vast, sweeping, broad-scale epic, or a smaller-scale, more intimate drama. While I've enjoyed my share of epics in my time -- and I do think "Lawrence" deserved its BP win just for sheer scope and majesty -- my personal preference is for the smaller-scale drama. I admire "Lawrence" but love "Mockingbird."
O'Toole was even more robbed in early 65 when Rex Harrison took home the Oscar for My Fair Lady. Had the Academy not given a thought to the wonderful O'Toole performance in Becket? He shows so much more range than Harrison. Anyway, History has now placed both actors where they should be:) With O'Toole being perhaps the most celebrated ones of those who haven't won an Oscar.

Highly disagree about Gregory Peck. It was an amazing performance but Peter O’Toole deserved it much more for Lawrence of Arabia.
That first upward glare DDL gives Eli when Eli first says "you've abandoned your child" was so full of fuming hatred and rage, I was scared for Eli from my seat. I saw this movie in the theater never having seen a trailer and had no idea what it was about. I left the theater in an altered state lol. Doesn't get much better than that performance.
I love that to kill a Mockingbird was forced upon us in school and then when we watched the movie, I remember thinking that Gregory Peck was perfection, and he put a face to the character, and I went back and reread the book
Agree about Bette Davis. "All This and Heaven Too" is another one of her finest performances. (Honestly, Bette could have won a dozen Oscars and still been under-recognized.)
Daniel Day Lewis is a talented actor. Sad that he had to retire, but I don’t blame him. I hope he is doing well.

No one has mentioned Hilary Swank in her two Oscar wins. She was stunning and believable in both "Boys Don't Cry" and "Million Dollar Baby". With the second movie, I think I cried for two days after and I am not a big cryer.

I llove daniel day Lewis in last of the Mohegans. I watched that movie I felt like I was there, in early America with the natives and the immigrants. . The photography! Everyone is great in that movie. Daniel had me believe he was an early colonist.

Curious about, given your #1 & 3, what your thoughts of Supporting Actor & Actress were that year.
I know we seemingly have turned on the movie since it's release. But I'm still a defender of it, in spite of its flaws. And it's one of my favorite wins of all time, if not my favorite win of all time.
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway for "Les Miserables." Such a beautiful, devastating performance. You watch the iconic, "I Dreamed a Dream" number and pinpoint the exact moment she wins the Oscar. And then just every time she's on screen after that, tears. Immediate tears.

I've always felt it was such a shame that Bette Davis and Gloria Swanson had to be up against one another that year, thereby splitting the vote and allowing Holiday to win. Margot Channing is Davis's most iconic performance.
Amen to that:) Luckily, film history has now set the record straight and Davis' is remembered as the superior performance:) Even Swanson's performance is held in higher regard than Holliday's. Many people would not even know that Davis has not won the trophy for All About Eve, and assume she has:) That tells us how some years' awards are puzzling to say the least, in hindsight:)
I would have voted for Eleanor Parker that year for CAGED. She was amazing! It’s a shame that her performance is never mentioned.
I don’t think that Frances McDormand should have won for FARGO. Emily Watson should have won that year for BREAKING THE WAVES. She was extraordinary!

Davis has said Hepburn deserved to win (in Alice Adams) the year Davis won for Dangerous... back then, they used to release to vote total and Hepburn was in 2nd place that year. You said, you had to include Davis... was Hepburn in your other video- can't remember... if not- Aah- how about some acknowledgment for the most awarded actor of all time??? I'd say 'Ther Lion in Winter' is her best Oscar winning performance, she won for 'Morning Glory' in 33, but she always maintained she was more deserving that year for another film- 'Little Women' (she won the Cannes for it). Her 'Philadelphia Story' performance was better than Ginger's winning one that year and of course, I agree with Davis about her 'Alice Adams'. I'd also have to put her 'Long Day's Journey into Night' performance at the top of her career.... I've always thought she and Davis split the vote that year- '62, helping Bancroft take it, the way Davis and Swanson split it helping Holiday and Close/Gaga splitting it helping Coleman.
I love Hepburn and I agree, The Lion in Winter is her best Oscar win. I don't think she was in the other video and I would love for her to by recognized! I like her in general, but I particularly love her performances in Alice Adams, Little Women (it's not my favorite adaptation but she's my favorite Jo, she was essentially already Jo just by being herself!), The Philadelphia Story, Bringing up Baby, Holiday, Stage Door, Adam's Rib, Desk Set, Summertime, Long Day's Journey, and On Golden Pond.

I feel like The Godfather wouldn't be The Godfather without Marlon Brando. I cannot imagine that movie with ANY other actor in that role. Another one of my favorite movies and anytime he comes into the scene hes all I see. I agree even though he wasn't there the whole time, his presence and performance were that strong you could still feel him.
And yay Fargo! I love the Coen brothers and Francis. Shes actually married to one of them! That was a really great performance.

Top Oscar wins of all time were from Daniel Day-Lewis - the GOAT and a record breaker with three Best Actor wins. Such a shame he retired yet Hugh Grant is still in employment.
You forgot to mention Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Bastards. He stole every scene he was in and you just knew this character he played Hans Landa was pure evil. I knew he was going to win the Oscar when I walked out the Theatre. I said the same of Marion Cotillard.

Daniel day Lewis Oscar speech is so strange to watch because it's basically impossible to see him as the man who played that role. Like, he has a different pitch, different voice, different facial expression, body language, demeanor, hair style, look ... nothing about him even remotely resembles Daniel plainview. I can't comprehend that guy played that role. What an insane performanxe
My favorite win was Ellen Burstyn for "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore". Two things about that: Ellen wasn't there and Martin Scorsese accepted it, so it's not a well-remembered moment. Also: Valerie Perrine looks so shocked at the announcement of Ellen's name, it takes attention away from the win itself.

So I just watched “Network” for the first time solely from your recommendation Brian Rowe, and I have to say that I disagree with you. I think that “Network” was a very good movie, but William Holden deserved that oscar moreso to me than Peter Finch. I know that it’s difficult to act kind of fanatical as Finch did, but I definitely preferred Holden’s performance.
