  • Shaping and glassing a paipo surfboard out of an extra blank I had. It can be ridden as a body board or surfboard. Shaped from a high density blue foam surfboard blank. Glassed with 4 oz E-Cloth (2 layers on the deck and 1 layer plus a tail patch on the bottom) and Silmar polyester resin. I used white foam stain stripes, black hot coat outline, FCS 2 fin plugs and Ho Stevie nubster fins for a semi-finless feel. Dimensions are 3'6" x 21" x 2 1/2". I've only crafted a handful of boards and am not an expert, but this is the process that works for me.

Hi Tanner...I read on your reply to a question that you are from Cali, but spent quite awhile living in Brasil...my wife is from Rio de Janeiro...we live in San Diego, in South Mission Beach...previously, I lived on The Big Island of Hawai'i, for about 8 years-- which is why I especially love your Paipo board...I read on your page that you glass boards as a "creative outlet" in your garage at home...&, that you've only glassed about 4-5 boards...I've read quite a few bios of the original sufer/shapers from California--guys who went onto become world famous...I would've thought you'd been glassing for at least a solid decade, judging from the quality of your work...I assume you're just a naturally talented craftsman...really beautiful work braddah...Aloha, Bill

Thank you Bill! I really appreciate the kind words. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and do lots of research to try and craft things correctly. But it also takes me 10x longer than those that do it for a living.
Yes, I lived in O Rio Grande Do Sul a little over 10 years ago and absolutely love Brazil. I visited Rio in 2012 with my wife and it's an amazing city. I try to visit Hawaii every few years and am going back this summer. I usually visit Kauai but would love to explore the Big Island more. Thanks again for your message!

Every surfboard you see in a surf shop was sanded after the hot coat, its industry standard. That’s why it’s called a sanded finish. Most glass shops even have a dedicated sander and that’s all he does - sand the hot coat.
