  • In this video I want to show you what the different types of burrs do to glass. Specifically, what different shades of gray are possible with Silicon Carbide, Gray Rubber, Diamond, Arkansas Stone, and various polishing Silicon Burrs.
We'll be using a Dremel Rotary Tool, a Dremel FlexShaft, and a sample/trash piece of glassware to engrave different swatches.

Very informative Javier, and much appreciated. I was wondering what the burs and polishers were doing as I don't have a bunch of supplies YET! When you're new to the engraving you don't know really what does what. I'm a pastel artist and believe me ... if I didn't inform folks about the surfaces that pastels work best or what they look like, they would they tear me up in little pieces...LOL I love engraving. Only have one piece I have done (a peacock) and I'm hooked. Your video really helped immensely. Thank you

where did you get the round micron polisher.

There's two competing websites that I have found so far. One is based in the UK called Eternal Tools. The other is based in the U.S. called Widget Supply. There is a slight difference in vocabulary between UK and US but they both have the same burrs, they are just called different (the US website calls them silicon wheel softies)

What type of dril are you using to hold the arkansa stone. I have a set of this size bit of shading, however, it does not fit in my foredom drill. THANKS., THIS WAS SOOOOO HELPFUL

It's a Dremel, and the 'pen' is a dremel flexshaft. The Arkansas stones have the metal cylinder smaller than other regular rotary tips so it all depends on the collet that you buy (which you can take in and out of the dremel or flexshaft itself) You can get a set of collets in order to accommodate the different sized burrs you buy some will hold a bigger circumference burr, while others can tighten to a higher degree (for smaller burrs such as the Arkansas stones seen here)

Hi Javier! I enjoy your videos so much. Would you be able to suggest a proper kit on Amazon for shading? I am not seeing kits for the Arkansas stone for whatever reason, just a white wool bit. Please suggest if you have the time. Thank you!

Thank you, Javier, for your useful information. I wonder if you, or anyone, can tell me what kind of glass is appropriate for engraving? This just doesn't appear to be covered anywhere on the internet.

Wow, lots to think about tip-wise. A lot of these seem to be redundant or atleast be skipped to achieve the same effect. How many tips and burrs have you used on your most shaded engraving? Thanks, trying to absorb as much as possible, but all the different engravers, stones, burrs etc. make it difficult and confusing. It is the curse of getting older, say it isn't so!

Should all the tips, etc. we purchase have 1/8" shanks? What is the purpose of all the different shank sizes if the one size is best? Thanks again.
