    Jackson's videos about Family Historian 7 have opened my eyes to all of the program's hidden power. After bad experiences with programs that use proprietary (locked) databases, I believe that GEDCOM based software like Family Historian is the way to go. I use Family Historian 7 running Parallels on the Macintosh, and they work perfectly!

    So much for me to learn, but eased by your lucid demonstration and commentary. Many thanks.

    Terrific video thanks so much. Been using FH for over 10 years and still learnt loads from this. Just one thing to add - when dragging images from websites and the copy/paste doesn’t work, then the ultimate “get out of jail” is simply to take a screen shot of that part of the screen and drop that into the FH image window. That’s something I do very regularly!

      Thank you, I was aware of the clipboard method and use Windows Snippet to grab sections of web pages. There are just so many ways to get results in FH and grab images from web when the process is not made user friendly by the providers.

    Thank you so much for your videos! Very informative! I too have been a Roots magic user since the beginning. When I became frustrated at how long it was taking to get version 8, I tried FH7. I fell in love with it. The source driven data entry, Ancestral Sources, all the flexibility and customizability. I played with RM8 after it finally launched, but I have been very disappointed. I'm truly enjoying FH7 and consider myself a convert!

    Another great video! One thing - for some reason, adding comments in properties while using Windows wouldn't transport over to FH for me. The solution in FH is to go to Tools > Preferences > Media and make sure that "Copy Image Tag Values to the Media Record" is checked. That solved the problem. Again, thanks!

    Another fine video, thank you. Just one thing I have noticed whilst using my tree as I follow you. It appears something is broken when sorting media by lowering / raising preference. Each Time I change the increase or decrease the media preference, the highlighted media selection jumps to the top of the list instead of following it. Is this a bug or just me?

      You are quite correct, something funny is going on there and I have reported it to the developers.

    Excellent video. I'm thinking of switching from RootsMagic7 to Family Historian. The web clipper looks like it would be useful for keeping track of DNA matches from the various DNA testing sites.

      I finally made that switch after testing RM8 and being with the company ~20 years and I can inform you the direct Rootsmagic import routine is very robust. Many of the limitations which frustrated me in Rootsmagic are now a thing of the past, there is a lot to learn in Family Historian and it is supported by a friendly informed community.

    you say you still have media linked in RM as well as FH - but if you rename media in FH, won't it break the link in RM? That's the issue I'm running up against...I rarely use RM these days, but don't want to throw it away completely, just in case...

    • @GenealogyReviews
      @GenealogyReviews  Год назад

      I don't interactively use Treeshare and my old habit of renaming media before linking has still to be broken. However you are correct and due to the lack of Rootsmagic development and Gedcom compatibility my main Family Historian database and that of Rootsmagic 7 are gradually getting more and more out of step in terms of media links, but they are issues I can do nothing about. The fields for selecting face regions were added to the Rootsmagic database in 2008 for the release of Rootsmagic 4 but never used, I needed to finally move on and progress my research. I have found I can work quicker and get more achieved in Family Historian and that is more important to me than keeping my previous program up to date with little advantage. For one shot Ancestry updates I use the Family Historian Plugin to make my Gedcom more in line with what Rootsmagic can understand. I'm not sure if you are aware but Rootsmagic 7 will not import a Rootsmagic 8 Gedcom without losses, I'm not sure if that is by design or accident but I find it really odd.

      @@GenealogyReviews Thanks for the insight, Jackson. I figured it was something like that and am also resigning myself to the fact my old RM8 file will fall further behind the more I use FH. I don't see myself going back. While TreeShare was great to pull down my tree from Ancestry complete with media, I should have stopped after the initial session, redone the media names then, and not used it afterwards. However, hindsight is 20/20, and I can only move on now and clean everything up in FH as much as possible. As for the RM7 issue, I hadn't tried to go backwards to it, especially once it became clear that RM8 wouldn't work for me - I just moved onto FH. I feel bad for Bruce and Michael as they clearly had hoped for a better result, but it's obvious that a year on from RM8's release, it hasn't been a success.
      I really enjoy your video tutorials and appreciate the time you take to make them as detailed as possible.

      @@teresaeckford5072 Teresa, I reluctantly joined the beta test July 2020 in the belief that there was a determination to close on past shortcomings and create something worthy of past wishes. I contributed a greta deal of feedback but the decision to join the beta program turned out to be a flawed on my part. I have RM8 but don't use it due to the increased click count, I do use RM7 to upload to Ancestry and collect hints, after that I add the data and media more concisely and I believe more quickly in FH7. I find FH a librarians dream for managing data and anything can be queried, another miss in RM. Personally I believe Treeshare may well be the rock RM perishes on as it has sucked up endless development time which could have been better invested elsewhere, really that was a significant fork in the road.

    I'd like to see a session on translating and transcribing a document from another language using just FH7 tools. Thank you!

    • @GenealogySoftware
      @GenealogySoftware Год назад

      Translation does not fall within core genealogy tools so I doubt any program will ever provide such a tool. I do plan to do a quick demo of a transcribing tool I have been finding useful, for translation I would use Google Translate.

    • @GenealogySoftware
      @GenealogySoftware 8 месяцев назад

      Roger, it depends on where your media is linked and sounds like yours is all linked as person media. Media can be linked to Facts, Places, Source, Citation etc. and hopefully Address in the future. Pictures of people should, of course, be linked to the person, for inclusion in reports I prefer a burial marker to be linked to the Burial fact, the same for a wedding photo. Place media speaks for itself and all documentary media supporting your research should be linked to Source or Citation depending on your style. That is my style which I believe is logical, however I would suggest you search the FHUG to get other user perspectives.

    Is there any way I can bring Ancestry online media to FH-7. I know if you have Roots Magic there's a way to do it with their software. I feel I'm looking at a night mare...I'll probably die before I figure out another way to do it. I have over 11,000 ppl and about 900 media pieces. Please help...any response would be much appreciated.........

    • @GenealogyReviews
      @GenealogyReviews  Год назад

      Hi, a lot of Family Historian users do this via Rootsmagic or Family Tree Maker. Search out the FHUG on the web and get to the knowledgebase articles to read more. Family Historian has a lot of ex Rootsmagic users and one has even written a PlugIn to get the process working for Ancestry, it is available from the PlugIn store for download.

      Thank you for your critic, since you require a slower pace of learning I would suggest you learn to use RUclips tools, I published a video explaining how just about a month ago. Regarding my voice, it's a tutorial and not a stage show, although I did look at your videos for some pointers on commentary but didn't hear any. Sorry it didn't suit you, I do this on a voluntary basis trying to help others.
