On this week’s adventure Alex and I (Austin) headed to downtown Sacramento to get on some early river salmon. We launched in the Discovery Park area and anchored up where we planned to wrap up some Brad’s Killer Fish with sardines and bounce them off the bottom behind the boat.
We were using Okuma SST 8’6 rods paired up with an Okuma Citrix spooled up with 65LB Braid. For tackle, we used Brad's K16 Killer fish wrapped with sardine. We had a sliding weight of 2oz weight with a 40LB Trilene Big leader to a dulock snap connected to our lure. On one of our rods, we also had a double-bladed Silvertron spinner out just to see what the fish would prefer this morning.
We launched the boat well before sunrise and got down and anchored up and started putting rods in the water. Well, it didn’t take but putting the second rod in the water and we were hooked up on a beautiful chrome king salmon. We saw a few other fish caught and saw a lot of fish roll, we got one so it was a good day. Still really early in the season but it's shaping up to be a great season.
Austin,
Why do you cut the belly out instead of just straight fileting each side?
Thanks!
John McHatton
Why do you have a bucket dragging behind the boat. Great fish! Thanks for the vid
That's Austin's trick. Stabilizes the boat with current. We are not as prone to flap around with the wind
Chrome! 👍🙏🎣⚒
When you using a plug do you troll it or just let the current take it ? I’m new to this
We were anchored. The current was doing the work.
@@catchhappy thank you . I would of messed up lol I thought you had to troll . I have silvertons and cut plugs i haven’t tried .
I tried looking for the kit you put together on-line and was not able to. Would you provide the web link for it?
What is the bucket outside the bucket for?
Are treble hooks legal in sac river
Yes
Are there salmon by Freeport?
Question, I had to mute but are u letting line out till weight hits the bottom? I've jigged and trolled the sacto but never that way yet
Yep. Let the line out until the weight hits the bottom (slowly, so it won't tangle up). Then jig it a few times to get the lure action going. Once the rod tip is bouncing with the lure fluttering in the current, set it in the rod holder and weight for the hit :)
@@catchhappy I got the plugs just never tried yet. But I will thank u. Last trip I jigged in the mukulume and netted an 18lbr
Awesome 👏🏼 do you guys use sliders for the weight?
We use a free sliding snap swivel to an 8-inch leader with 2 oz weight. Call Sweeney's Sports, and ask for Austin if you need help setting up.
Im new to salmon fishing what kind of rods and line do you recommend, for like shore spinner fishing?
How do you catch good sized stripers at discovery park? We use cut bait can't get a fish Bigger then 12inches
Use big live bait to get bigger fish, or fight through the small ones to get to the big fish on cut bait.
what kind of fillet is that??? come on bruh you left hella meat..lol
I wouldn't recommend Discovery park for fishing to anyone. I was there yesterday checking out the site and I was absolutely shocked on what I saw. The park is extremely dirty, trash everywhere, crowded, and most of all, there were countless of homeless and encampment along the banks. We also saw a group of hardcore thugs/gangsters with cars doubled parked taken half of the road. Marijuana smokes and alcohol everywhere. Needless to say, we didn't feel safe. I'll never go back there. What the hell happened to Sacramento??? I can assure you it wasn't like this pre-covid. Most parks I've been in to are nice, not much trash and grass were green and trimmed. We are from San Francisco and I was used crack jokes of how Sac actually did a better job than SF on keeping it tidy. It's sad how these people took things for granted and turned it into trash. Very sad.
