So sorry to hear about the car trouble. I hope things start looking up, beginning in the next episode. Yeah, as I saw how you guys had rigged up the towing ropes, I was thinking to myself, "Hmmm, that does not look really street-legal for more than a couple of blocks in a city or a couple of miles in the country. Too bad that it happened at a National Park, because the NPS can be fairly rule-intensive.
Yeah, is it true that such difficult situations are part of the adventure, are inevitable, and never lends themselves to the question of "if it will happen"? The question is, “when will it happen?” Unfortunately, the “answer” always comes unprepared and when your world is more beautiful. I was very happy for you when I saw that although you were going through difficult and very unpleasant moments in all respects, you managed to find the beautiful side of the moment. I am so happy for you because you have each other, which is most important to you, and at the same time you have real friends. I look forward to your next episode, in which I wish with all my heart to see you smile again and that you have been through all the bad things you have encountered. Wow! So so sorry that you broke down! 😢 To watch this video brings back so many amazing memories! I use to live in Sun Valley Idaho and drove through those crater fields. We love Yellow Stone and Grant Teton National Parks! The wildlife is amazing. I recommend it in the early spring for one of your future trips. Definitely planning on going back there! Plus I need to take my hubby and kids to where I use to live. I you coming to Miami this time around! If you do make it to Florida please message me! There is wild life in the Everglades.
Thank you Anne. We would love to visit florida and the everglades one day. But it will not be for this trip. we ll keep it in mind in the future! thank you very much for the invitation.
Might be the injector seat washer blown- pressure rises in rocker cover and pushes the oil out through the breather pipe. TDCi Ford engine - seen this twice . If it is this and as long as you didn’t loose oil pressure it’s ok fix. Enjoying the channel.👍
Hey there, you may want to consider a tow bar. Most U Haul places have them to purchase and so much safer than tow strap. Around 150$ and I always carry it either on the front of the FJ60 or the TJ Jeep. My worst case was towing a Ford Truck home behind a rental UHaul. If you are riding in the towed vehicle, you can enhance the braking when needed.
Hi Guys. We went to Yellowstone this May and my Subaru started to act funny near the end of the day. We had to change our plans and stay in Bozeman instead of Dillon that night. It's fun to hear what you think of the Northwest US. I live in North Idaho. We are having a snowstorm today. Safe travels and keep up your great attitudes! Cheers!
@@NextMeridianExpedition Now that I am watching your adventures from the beginning I see that you are showing us some incredibly beautiful places I never knew about! It's very inspiring!
That's terribly unfortunate. Right in such a nice part of the trip. I hope it's something simple like an injector seal or turbo seal... Perhaps a lighter grade oil and a catchcan might be wise. Also if you need to be towed again over any real distance you must remove a propshaft or risk making a right mess of your transfer box. Fingers crossed for you both. Can't help you from the UK unfortunately!
Ahh that's fab so glad it wasn't a nightmare. Actually glad you reminded me. One of my 300tdi needs a rocker cover gasket it's making a mess of no. 4 injector 🤦😂
A solid bar is much safer for towing. the problem with a long rope is that people may not realise you are being towed and overtake where there is not space to overtake both vehicles.
Hi For a long long distance we would have preferred a solid bar. But we had no alternative in the middle of Yellowstone. Eventually with the Walkie talkie we could maintain good coordination and the rope was not very long at all we would have warning lights and pull on the side when another car was coming up. More on this adventure in next episode. It does require a lot of focus though...
I'm glad you're safe. It might seem a bit heartless of me, but the adventure does look to be an expensive one? I guess breakdowns or when things go wrong are a part of the challenge of travelling.
Hey I am Mario I just saw your your video by doing you guys are amazing I don't think it's a big deal with your engine probably is the turbo anyway keep doing what you do
You should hit Rocky Mountain National Park and see the huge elk herds in Estes Park outside the park with the alpine slide and the gondola up a hill...then Golden for a cute town where the mountains start and home to the Colorado Railroad Museum
Nice to see a Kiwi rego plate in USA! Sorry to see this,,,,, what appears to have happened is your turbo oil seals have corrupted and leaked oil into the manifold area. You's are very very lucky it wasn't an aggressive leak which would have resulted in the engine running away and blowing up!!! lf that happened you would have been looking for an entire engine, not to mention the increased repair cost!!!
Another thing with diesels is to have a rag handy for stuffing into the air intake if the engine does happen to run away. The only way to turn a runaway diesel off is to block off any air entering the air intake with a rag!
So sad to here you broke down , but that’s only one small part of over landing , and it did not happen in a hard to get to spot ( I broke down one time and it toke three days to get help to were I was …not fun .but had some awesome views were we were .) but look at all the beautiful scenery and animals you saw , and you had a awesome friend in Tom & jerry to offer you help . what a epic friend . Looking to see more from you all enjoyed your video . Cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A. :):)..:)🍻👍🏼🌎
3 days is long! HHaha but yes. We promised each other to keep good spirit in these situations at eventually things were fine. We looked at the elks while waiting the tow and as you said Tom being with us was a great comfort! All the best Steve!
It's not surprising that something like this could happen, I just feel bad for you that of all places, it happened at Yellowstone National Park! I'd be upset, too!
Yes it was more on the moment we felt a bit desperate. But eventually looking at elk bulls while waiting for a tow truck is not that bad. It is entertaining :)
@@NextMeridianExpedition That was the cost of being towed to the park boundary? If so, then that was literally highway robbery. I would raise a stink about it, and try to get some of your money back.
@@NextMeridianExpedition hope you get the Albotross the Defender back on the road. It's been inspiring to watch you guys. Thanks for sharing your story and adventures!
Wow another story for the camp fire. You guys are alive and everything else can be sorted regardless(yes a row truck cost is always a grudge payment). Onwards and upwards.
If you see an engineering shop on the way, they could make a Towing bar and an easy hitch to go on the front of the Landrover. Be way safer than Towing with the strap. If have locking hubs on front turn to unlock. Be easier to steer. I would top up the oil. Start it and check where oil coming from. If not bad when idling, and has oil pressure, no big knocking notices. and not heap of smoke out exhaust. I would just let it idle when being towed. You will have your power steering, and power brakes to make it easier being towed. Cheak to make sure an animal has not made a nest in the engine air intake. If it has, the engine will will be gutless, blowing black, blue smokeout the exhaust from sucking oil out of the motor. Might be all that is wrong with it. Hope all works out for you.
You can rent a U-Haul car trailer to haul your defender better than towing it 250km. If it came down to it you could rent a U-Haul truck to pull the trailer.
Good tip! That s a comment that came back several time. From where we were was complicated to do but in another location if we have an issue again we will definitely keep that in mind
Sorry for what happened. Anyway, as much as it seems an upsetting event having the rangers telling you to use the park trailer, they actually "helped" you to save money in reparing the drivetrain of your Defender. If flat bed/tow truck not available and you need to be towed by other vehicle, you should go under the Defender and disconnect front and rear prop shafts otherwise you would compromise part/s of your drivetrain.....repairs could be quite expensive. Good luck
Land Rovers are so good for overlanding with that rigid, boxy design and so unreliable😪😪😪As they say "If you wanna go into the Outback, take a Land Rover. But if you wanna go in and come back, make sure it's a Land Cruiser." Stay safe and positive👍Best of luck
I am hoping there is not much damage. I feel like the issue maybe related to your choice oil viscosity for that cold morning. I hope it didn't blow a turbo.
There is a really good documentary on HBO max all about Jessi Combs life. She was one heck of a good human. The Fastest Woman on Earth is the title. Well worth a watch.
(5:20-5:26) Isn't there a law that requires people who shoot in the wild to pick up, retrieve, or collect their shelling casings? Considering it takes years for metal to corrode or decompose it's an environmental hazard in the long term, especially in such a beautiful place. Also with the price of brass nowadays this is a very wasteful practice. Stay healthy and safe Nick and Mathilde. God bless!

Bummer!! We've been talking several times on line about the pleasures that lie ahead in the Canyonlands of Utah. I live in Driggs ID, 30 miles across Teton Pass from Jackson Wy. It may not feel like it but its good that the Park Rangers stopped you from flat towing your Defender out of the Park because of the wildlife, hills and traffic. Better to be sitting a parking lot trying to decide what to do next than being upside down in a canyon. Taking it to Jackson is probably a bad idea. Jackson Hole Wyoming is the richest county in the entire USA, and rents and services are priced equivalently. I don't know of a single shop that would work on something as unusual as a Defender. Not that they don't exist---- I just don't know of one that I would trust. When my VW fuel pump failed in the Jackson Hole Ski area parking lot the nearest foreign car shop wanted $550 dollars to tow it three miles to their shop and install a new one. My next door neighbor who has a big truck flat bed wrecker charged me $ 100 to drive across a 8700 ft pass, bring it back and roll it into my garage. The local parts house delivered a new fuel pump to my door for $120 and I installed it in less than an hour. Hate to be the bearer of bad news. but if the engine ran for very long without sufficient oil it is toast. I used to own an exotic car restoration shop. I'm too old and lame to be your mechanic, but would be glad to help you find your best solution. Best of luck! Richard
Thank you Richard. As you say it was probably for the best in Yellowstone. We eventually found a place in Jackson recommended by another Land Rover owner. But it was really random that someone knew anything of Defender over there as you describe. We were lucky to be recommended. Thank you for your comment and encouragement!
If you took your vehicle to Jackson I hope you brought money! Your oil leak is likely a broken exterior oil line, loose fitting, or cracked oil radiator. Not rocket science. @@NextMeridianExpedition
You never said how much the park tow cost you. And did they give you a phone number for another tow company after dropping you off ? Here is an example cost for a large vehicle in America. A large tour bus (think rock star) is around $1300 but goes up for miles. Smaller vehicles like yours probably in the $150 to 250 range but being in a national park i have no clue...

And such a bummer, the breakdown ... hopefully not too many more problems in the future! Wishing you all the best, guys 💪
thank you very much!
It was great to see the video. Very nice job with the production- music, editing, etc. Your positive attitudes are wonderful!
Thanks a lot Cindy! It is so nice to read! We re learning.
Hi John! Yes all solved the following episodes show the end work of this story! Thanks a lot for watching
Drat! The dreaded "flatbed of shame". My Range Rover Classic has come home 3 times that way. Hope you are up and running soon.
Back on the road! We show you that in the next video
Great video. I haven’t been to Yellow Stone and I’ve lived in the states my whole life. Enjoy our great country
It s a dream of a place! But many places are amazing in the states so it takes time going around
Just like in the trips I've "taken" with you so far, I'm here to support you with at least a good thought. Greetings from Romania and I'm only waiting for good news from you. Cheer up guys, and move on! Warmly Dan
Exactly ! it is not bad in the end and we learn from this :) Good news will be coming ! they always do! all the best Dan
If you come to Colorado in the SE part are the highest sand dunes in the US with a great background of mountains....and in metro Denver there mesas with great view of the metro area and foothills
Hey Francis, thanks for the support and that’s what it was. All fixed now 😊
@@NextMeridianExpedition good to hear that. Looking forward to your news. Safe journey. Kind regards F
Thanks for the advice. We will think about uhaul next time. Where we were it was about impossible but that is good to keep in mind!
Yes, with Jeeps and Rovers, you may as well weld one on the front permanently :)
Cheers!
It s beautiful up here. Although we did not show Idaho too much it is beautiful as well. Thank you very much for your comment.
Thanks Matt 🙏 your support online is already great and luckily it was just the seals and a new rocker cover to order!
Completely unnecessary if you know what you are doing and the brakes work on the towed vehicle
I guess you can't help bad luck, but it does put a damper on things. Can only get better.
It will! For sure!
I'm glad you're safe. It might seem a bit heartless of me, but the adventure does look to be an expensive one? I guess breakdowns or when things go wrong are a part of the challenge of travelling.
It’s all part of the adventure; but travelling like we do is not very expensive. Garage bills are usually a months expense living on the road.
Hey I am Mario I just saw your your video by doing you guys are amazing I don't think it's a big deal with your engine probably is the turbo anyway keep doing what you do
Eventually it was not too bad (injector seals) thank you Mario! (Btw nick s middle name is Mario too! )
You should hit Rocky Mountain National Park and see the huge elk herds in Estes Park outside the park with the alpine slide and the gondola up a hill...then Golden for a cute town where the mountains start and home to the Colorado Railroad Museum
Oooh Thanks!
As for hikes ruclips.net/video/hIK8-ZoP48Y/видео.html
Stay strong 💪 ✨️ 😎
Thank you Joel!
Good luck
Nice to see a Kiwi rego plate in USA! Sorry to see this,,,,, what appears to have happened is your turbo oil seals have corrupted and leaked oil into the manifold area. You's are very very lucky it wasn't an aggressive leak which would have resulted in the engine running away and blowing up!!! lf that happened you would have been looking for an entire engine, not to mention the increased repair cost!!!
Another thing with diesels is to have a rag handy for stuffing into the air intake if the engine does happen to run away. The only way to turn a runaway diesel off is to block off any air entering the air intake with a rag!
yes we heard! we were happy to stop when we did !
@@NextMeridianExpedition cheers
It's not surprising that something like this could happen, I just feel bad for you that of all places, it happened at Yellowstone National Park! I'd be upset, too!
Yes it was more on the moment we felt a bit desperate. But eventually looking at elk bulls while waiting for a tow truck is not that bad. It is entertaining :)
Its so sad 😢 I didn't mean to say this but land rover is not a reliable. How much for service in national park?
Expensive hahaha 900…
@@NextMeridianExpedition OMFG! Its so fucking expensive!
@@NextMeridianExpedition That was the cost of being towed to the park boundary? If so, then that was literally highway robbery. I would raise a stink about it, and try to get some of your money back.
Also, if visiting multiple US National parks / monuments consider the “America the beautiful” national park pass. You’ll save a lot.
We got it! So useful indeed.
Thanks
Thank you so much Lauvenite for the support from both of us
@@NextMeridianExpedition hope you get the Albotross the Defender back on the road. It's been inspiring to watch you guys. Thanks for sharing your story and adventures!
Wow another story for the camp fire. You guys are alive and everything else can be sorted regardless(yes a row truck cost is always a grudge payment). Onwards and upwards.
Yes we will be all fine !
Good luck
🙏 thanks
I dont know if its just me but I get a different vibe of Tom. He reminds me of Dahmer (Netflix series) Oh probably I watch too much TV. 😱
Hahahah must just be the mustache 😅
If you make it to Colorado Springs..Let me know...Get you up Pikes Peak. 14K mountain
Very kind of you thanks! You tooo cold Maybe now no?
Tom is a solid dude.
Really is 🙌
Land Rovers are so good for overlanding with that rigid, boxy design and so unreliable😪😪😪As they say "If you wanna go into the Outback, take a Land Rover. But if you wanna go in and come back, make sure it's a Land Cruiser." Stay safe and positive👍Best of luck
How much did the tow cost? I hope all is good now!
900 ... all is well now :)
I am hoping there is not much damage. I feel like the issue maybe related to your choice oil viscosity for that cold morning. I hope it didn't blow a turbo.
No big damage luckily. We stopped in time!
Tom is a true gentleman .......and he's still on a mission to bake his potato!!!!!🤪
He is! Hahaha yes a forever quest for him
That could get expensive right quick
Indeed ... just the tow truck alone...
Bronx Love guyz😎😎😎
Love back !
There is a really good documentary on HBO max all about Jessi Combs life. She was one heck of a good human. The Fastest Woman on Earth is the title. Well worth a watch.
Oh cool! Thanks we ll add it to our watch list.
God bless!
Thank you Keith !
Nope to bad waah
Beautiful scenery apart from Albo getting broke 😔
New subcriber here! Nice vid, you should bring a toyota, like mine and you guys have peace of mine✌️
Just kidding! Keep exploring. Love your channel, thanks to eva i found your channel
Welcome onboard King Betong! Hahaha most common comment around here 😅
!!!!!!
Thanks a million… that is way too nice of you. 🙏🏻 from both of us.
Where is the other girl that was with you guys in Alaska?
We parted ways in Canada. We have an episode ( 6 episodes ago i believe) about this
Courage mates
Thank you Stephane !
900 and no but we figured something out eventually.
A guy from New Zealand still holds the record for fastest Indian motorcycle there and he did that in 1967 and still has not been broken
Wow… that is crazy impressive!
Burt Munro
Tom 'tater' to the rescue!
Wooohoo!
Jammer vd pech hopelijk snel opgelost
Thank you!
Those are not bullets, they're casings or brass.
Yeah we know, just didn’t have the term in English. Thanks
Bummer you broke down again.....Land Rovers are just are not reliable...I bought a Hummer H3 and outfitting it now ... I hope it's not serious....looking forward to finding out what broke on it....I was in Yellowstone in 1977 for a week...was awesome 👍😎
Well it's a Ford Transit/Ranger engine... possibly a co production with Peugeot (not sure about that last bit). Notice how Jerry's Land-Rover designed and made 5 cylinder is still going strong.
Yeah land rover sucks
