Absolutely loved the “Mars Volta” tune! Please complete that track.
I support that!
Yeah, it definitely sounded cool
Yes please!!
absolutely that riff is KILLER !!
YEEESSSS
Alternate video title: Playing Jazz
Awesome work here man!
My thoughts too, very Jazz sounding
playing *j a z z*
I used to be in a band with three guitarists. It gave us a unique sound for melody and harmony given we could cover more ground on the guitar neck between us. I played a les paul through a Marshall adding texture and lead and the other two played acoustic guitars. At rehersal one night we spontaneously at the end of a song played three random(ish) chords in key on three separate sections of the neck and were surprised by how good it sounded. Joking around we figured it'd be funny/interesting to end songs with the same concept live. Each of us claiming a different part of the neck at some point during the song using gestures/signals and playing the most random, unusual notes we could. Sometimes in key, sometimes deliberately one or two frets off key. In the weirdest, most awkward positions we could get our hands into. Inevitably we either landed an incredible, rich, full sounding chord or absolute, derailed chaos. It either got a huge laugh from everyone in the room, or a huge round of applause! Either way we always had great fun with it. 😄😄
Lol that’s awesome!
Well I’m going to try this... 😂
Do you have any videos of this? It would be interesting to watch lol
@@christiantolliver6331 Unfortunately not, the band lasted a year or two if memory serves and was a challenge in almost every aspect excluding the music. We had a very spinal tap fight in a car park once over miss-communication of a P.A system for example. The singer assured us it was all taken care of. It turned out what he meant by that was, he was gunna ask our drummer if we could use his after turning up way after our best efforts at a chaotic, disorganised and already irritable sound check. Leaving us all very confused and out of the loop for a few hours. Which resulted in our understandably pissed off drummer having no choice but to drive home and fetch his so we could do the gig. (We were already getting close to the starting time. Our singer/guitarist often turned up at the last possible moment before a gig, leaving the rest of us to muck in for sound check and set ups etc. Wounds were pre-salty to be polite about it.). Police actually walked over to check if we were OK after hearing raised voices, I was stuck in the middle doing my best to calm things down. The police walked away laughing ultimately and in the end we somehow managed to play a good gig, although tensions were incredibly high. I recall kicking my amp out of sheer frustration at one point just because it was breaking in and out, which is very, very uncharacteristic of me honestly. There's the odd, random recording floating around I think. Given that story alone, you can probably imagine why there wasn't much done, especially professionally. 😂😅😎✌🙃
@@SeagoGuitarist wow that's crazy, being in a band definitely isn't as easy as movies/media make it out to be huh
You busted out the slide and I swear I thought free bird was coming
Totally
Sammy: makes sophisticated riff with odd chords.
Meanwhile
Me: "Cmaj7?....hmmm...this is odd"
Best chord tbh
The thumbnail is the most not like samuraiguitarist-thumbnail I've ever seen
More of a Davie504 thumbnail lol
@Kalbo I'm gonna pretend like I'm far past that for the sake of saving my last dwindling shred of sanity.
*Samuraiguitaristest
DVD DVD Sumoguitarist
I was going to say the same thing
Next video: incredibly even guitar chords
underrated comment
*Plays C, D, E, Em, F, G, A, Am for 10 minutes*
Asus2/E?
x34032
C major add9
ok but the quentin tarantino was so crisp that we want a full version of it
Agreed
That honestly gave me more James Bond vibes.
I totally dig it either way though. lol
Please
I miss how you would give titles to all those Little songs 😢
Same
I was gonna comment about this. If it's tough I get why he wouldn't do it, but if it's a question of "do people like it" I really love those.
Ihave managed to play the holdsworth chord after a minute of literal stretching but i can't even dream of using it in a progression. Even with simplest chords like Am. It took literal minutes to position my fingers.
Do not do that so that you do not hurt your hand
@@aasserelzoghby6781 how considerate of you, thanks man lol
@@yasirozer4782 i don't care about your hand
@@heem8814 me neither but you're supposed to be benign you're a disgrace amongst tumors
@@yasirozer4782 love that
This is one of my favorite videos you’ve done. Your background in jazz gives you a perspective I don’t hear from anyone on the interwebs. Most of us guitarists are light on theory and heavy on braggadocio.
The last one was my favorite....
Reminded of my dad picking around when I was a kid.
He played like that allot. Trying new things and chilling out.....
I love how you use them in a musical setting. Could have been a boring straightforward video but you made it very interesting! Thanks as always Sammy G!
The scofieldish tune really rules.
Bruh that first song should be a full thing it slaps
Therapist: Prog metal samurai guitarist isn't real, he can't hurt you
Prog metal samurai guitarist:
Really nice that you fully incorporated the chords, the only way I could make that first one work was as a passing dissonant note in another progression
Who else thought he was gonna get a bunch of weird chords and make 1 song with all of them
It’s not really an “odd” chord, because it’s pretty well known, but I really like the minor major 7’s. Also, the Minor 6 Add 9
It's very noir
Minor major 7s are basically augmented chords
6/9 chords are pretty common and they're great.
you enjoy those minor seconds huh
never mind i misinterpreted this as minor 6 minor add9
The craziest one that sticks out to me is a simple G minor chord from "Equinox" by Toru Takemitsu. It's in EbADGBbe tuning. The fingering requires you to press the low G with your thumb and use your pinky to play high D (10th fret) to A to Bb all on the first string.
Awesome stuff man love your work.
your tracks are awesome in this video man, love watching the jazz background come into play in so many different styles
Great video. I hope you'll create more content like this. Seeing you putting some theory into practice was very inspiring.
Incredible. I loved hearing these chords and enjoyed them in context. Thank you for expanding my musical vocabulary!
Please do another video like this! This was so fun to see your interpretation of these chords!!
Love the jams!!!
Man, this is by far the most musical guitar channel, so good!
Amazing that you can slide right into that last example chord during the progression.
@samuraiguitarist youre a legend dude, found your channel late 2019 and youre my favorite guitarist RUclipsr. Youre fucking awesome man, especially with the mars volta reference
Wow these are some crunchy tunes bro! Seriously some of of the best imo, keep it up!
possibly the best video of yours i've seen. thanks man.
Greatly done!
great playing!
Truly inspirational. Your compositions in this video have made some nice contributions to my ‘vocabulary’. Thank you. Liked and subscribed.
This is a cool video concept and I like what Samurai Guitarist did with them musically
Once again, very good playing
Oh boy! You are really a creative genius with an exquisite taste!
I can't understand how you make so much dissonance sound so pleasing!
Always enjoy your content, but you really nailed the different distinctive styles of some of those artists in this one.

You nailed that Scofield tune, nice one !
the mars volta thing, is so awesome! Haha, love it man
The Mars Volta esque tune almost reminded me of a Megaman track. Absolutely loved it
I’m saving up for a tele that looks like yours because you truly inspired me to pick up the guitar
That last chord where you take your thumb around is very similar to upright bass "thumb position" in the higher registers. Cool. Way to go man. Love the vids.
dude you gotta upload more these are gold
thanks sammy G ya love to see it. keep em coming w the weirdo chords
Gotta say, kuods on how awesome and musical all of your examples turned out! I particularly liked the Scofield and “Tarantino” examples!
That’s “Mars Volta” track was amazing!!!!
More of this!! 🤯
It blows my mind how creative u are. All those demo songs are something I would expand into a full song
you are a well-rounded guitar slinger, cowboy keep it rockin and rollin always and forever
now my favorite video you've made
Love this
You are amazing. So much variety. Made me realize how limited my concept of music is...
really enjoyed...thanks
that was awesome. especially liked the maj7#11 chord
seriously good compositions man. I was entertained. Paul Davids called, said he wanted his gig back! lol
this was my favorite sammyg video yet!
Your awesome and inspiring. Time to go have fun on my guitar.
love this one
especially liked how you didnt immediately resort to using the chords as "weird jazz music chords to play hard jazz with" and instead actually used them in other musical settings, would love to see more of this... love the lydian b3 sound too :0
Really showing off that range! The Scofield bit was my fave.
I really enjoyed your tune with the Holdsworth chord.
That slide solo part in the second track is super sweet. You should make a full song out of it.
thank u sammy g, very cool
Holy shit this genuinely blew me away i clicked on thus vid because of the thumb nail but im impressed by how good you made these chords sound. Like i can see myself listening to this on my free time
Seriously inspired by the Mars Volta esque track - great work!
The tone of your Yellow Hofner is sweet ! Cheers Sammy g :-)
Dude you should do more of that sco type stuff, love how it sounds and how u play it
Recently I've learned bits of music theory and I must admit: It is really nice to know what you are talking about when you speak numbers but not tab
Wow that first tune was amazing! DUDE. Pleeeeeease start playing some more like that! I wanted to mosh INSTANTLY
This is a vibe
the grain on that fingerboard is A+
A lot of thanks for this huge work, and your help. Unfortunately, there are almost no advanced/strange chord lesson for guitar on the internet.
All of these sound amazing but the demo you made for The Elektra Chord was a beauty, sounded like a SRV song!
The hardest guitar chord I've ever played is Amaj7/B at the 7th fret position which is 1st string 4th fret, 2nd string 5th fret, 3rd string 6th fret, 4th string 7th fret and the 6th string 7th fret using your thumb.
Sounds Amaj7ng
That was a major mistake
Jazz hurts
Bobbyyyyyy
Loved that Elektra one
I loved the Tarantino-track. He seems to look up those things from his record collection, but good ol' Sammy G just looks up the chord in that big brain of his and makes it work.
Nice!
Using cool unique chords in a heavy setting like first one is sick
amazing video concept, audience interaction, and musical criativity! loved the video! by the way, what is the name of the danelectro baritone model, is it the 66BT?
That first tune you made (the more chill version before the final one) reminds me of Gran Turismo in a way. specifically the older ones from the PS and PS2. Very nice 😊
The first chord is used really well in both 'texas flood' and 'the same things keep happening to me even in my dreams'
youre asking like these arent commonly used jazz. hey you there, can you solo over this cmin(maj7)6/9#11 chord?
you should call it cm/∆6 (#11)
Yeah just play any note and you're probably gonna be right
@@aqualili thank you i shall use this chord
yeah just play melodic minor #4 scale/lydian b3 and you're good to go
Isnt that Elon Musks kid?
wow, the Lydian (1st one) tune was quite unique and prog. i can’t remember hearing anything like this before, it would be rad to hear something of this nature fleshed out to a full composition.
obviously it’s not the scale that gives this vibe to the tune, clearly it’s your structural and rhythmic approach. I, myself, also never found Lydian mode to be any inspirational lol. it’s cool that you were able to construct something really interesting with it
That first chord , I thought , no way ! Then when you arranged it in that track , not too bad ! Considering what you had to work with , that was very impressive !
So now Tarantino already has the main theme for kill bill 3, nice.
Those were incredible songs
The "Mars Volta" tune was awesome. I'd love to listen the full song.
I play the synthesizer, but not the guitar. I hardly ever play chords with my left hand, except for two note ones, especially octaves and fifths. I think this allows me to focus on the melodies, but I really never know what I am doing but I like and am surprised by the results.
This proves that theory is really unecessary.
the tarantino one was absolutely sick!!! so good
Last song reminds me of Bela Fleck. He loves to switch between minor and major keys for the A and B sections of melodies.
Somehow I knew there would be something Holdsworthy here, but I love it! (Allan and Sco ARE two of my favourite players.)
The spaced out style and overall minor tone give me major Crumb vibes, especially that last song, very nice
Thanks for using my suggestion, Sammy!
2:43 for someone "who only has a tube screamer" (not my words), SammyG sounded pretty awesome
this needs a part 2
Pretty cool dude
I loved the last chord but nice guitars bro
Hey I love your chanelllllllll!
That hofner hollowbody is gorgeous
Yes
