Not a single wasted lyric. As I get older, the line "Planting trees I'll never climb" brings mixed emotions. Time runs out eventually but the things we do can live on.
Tom Petty is my favorite artist ever & just heard this song 20 minutes ago & had to hear more. 4 Brett Dennen songs in & wondering how in the hell I never heard of him. Great songs so far
My wife and I have been living full-time in an RV since August of 2020. Working around my speaking and book signing schedule, we travel throughout the country with our faithful golden retriever. We also do quite a bit of volunteer work throughout our travels (planting trees we'll never climb). This song really resonated with me from the very first time that I heard it. People need to get on the move. The people who we've met and places that we've seen so far have been beyond amazing. Get out and see the world! It's the best preventive medicine there is!
@@achau9598 Tell us you don't understand music and songwriting. The strumming and rhythm are slightly similar and fairly common. You could probably find a dozen or more "ripoffs" before and after Tracy.
Song reminds me of my dad. He encouraged me to join the Navy and see the world. The lyrics bring back to me the conversations I had with him in pay phones across the world. There were indeed kids with war paint on. Sadly we lost him due to COVID in December. He planted so many trees he would never climb. One of those songs where lyrics are up to interpretation, based on how they hit you.
My son just went on a road trip with his girlfriend from Buffalo to Yosemite and all points in between. The song nails my thoughts and feelings when he was away for almost 2 months. This amazing song really moved me. Congratulations on your new arrival. Welcome to fatherhood and the joys and challenges ahead. This is a heck of a time to try to raise children. Strange times indeed.
Im 38 weeks pregnant with my first and this video has me so emotional. My husband and I have traveled all over the world together and we cannot wait to bring our son on our next adventures.
I've been living this video since 2015. now I'm 56 chasing waterfall, mountain views, grist mill and much much more. meeting people of all walks of life. chatting and spending time with strangers and after we part I always feel like I'm leaving a friend behind. if you think Brett is just singing a song you are wrong. he's sending a message we all need to hear. this might be one of your problems, (watch this vid) Bruce Sudano - The Mountain. thanks Brett. awesome message. I hope people hear you. I love that line. I've gather sunsets in my prime now I planted trees I'll never climb.
Whenever I listen to this song. It reminds me of the great sunny mornings when my Dad was alive. I kept this song as my alarm ringtone from that time and I still do till now. The lyrics are beautiful. Thanks Brett.
In this masterpiece I hear the very best of Tom Petty, Crosby, Stills, Nash, (and especially) Neil Young. I also hear a gorgeous song and lyrics that blow me away (there's kids out there with warpaint on, and hearts that break like crayons) Who can write lyrics like that?
Lyrics: Well, I started out down a dirty road Started out all alone And the sun went down as I crossed the hill And the town lit up, the world got still I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings Coming down is the hardest thing Well, the good old days may not return And the rocks might melt and the sea may burn I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly) But I ain't got wings (Learning to fly) Coming down (Learning to fly) Is the hardest thing (Learning to fly) Well, some say life will beat you down Break your heart, steal your crown So I've started out for God knows where I guess I'll know when I get there I'm learning to fly around the clouds But what goes up (Learning to fly) Must come down I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly) But I ain't got wings Coming down is the hardest thing I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly) Around the clouds But what goes up (Learning to fly) Must come down I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly, learning to fly) I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly, learning to fly) (Learning to fly, learning to fly) 😁
WOW ❤️ ……Don’t have to be rich to get around….DAYS GO BY GET OUT AND SEE THE WORLD WITH YOUR OWN EYES……..ITS HARD TO SEE WHAT YOUR GOING THROUGH …. This hits on so many levels we don’t know what others are going through 😢….. EVERYONE has a different outlook and perspective on life … see it IN YOUR OWN EYES.
Wow I couldn't place the sound, and I'm from Gainesville FL. *Slaps self* he's so Petty-esque. No wonder I can't get enough of his music, and I just discovered this fella bout 2 weeks ago now.
Really a perfect song for all the tweens and teens who would rather keep their head buried in their phones and iPads. It's amazing how my tween son will resist doing something but once he's in the middle of it, he so glad we're there. Just get out and see the world. With this song, I have a feeling Brett has planted a tree that will be climbed for years and years to come!
I loved the song even before I saw the video. Pierpont, Marina Park, Ventura River Preserve... that world you see is my town. Thank you for reminding me that I am truly blessed.
Beautiful song. Reminiscent of all the great songwriters, with a touch of melancholy while being hopeful and forward thinking. Like already mentioned, the "planting trees I'll never climb" results in a little catch in the throat.
That was so awesome😃 I am so happy for you to have such a beautiful family. And the music it inspires you to make. Can’t wait to see you in Indy and Ohio🤙😺
this reminds me ov the gold coast me and my dad went on a trip and he played it early in the moring i was soo tired but this song is just so amazing brett dennen thankyou its a really positive song.
Wow......What a Beautiful Song u Got Brett...Put's me in a Better Mood Every time i hear it Man !!! The Video is also Classic...Voice reminisce of the Late Tom Petty! 👀
I saw your Aint No Reason video when I was a youngin and have been searching for years and years with the only memory being the image of you…. Just found you minutes ago. What an amazing song this is. I’m about to dig through the catalog. Glad you are still making art and glad to be here!
It’s the general consensus that Tom Petty lives on. I hear it too; he does resonate in your lyrics, words. But - I also hear the future of a generation that’s mine. I spent so many years listening to Petty and The Heartbreakers. Wondering if my generation would have that smooth melodic melodies and a metaphoric lyricist that could move my soul the same. I found it here. Three years now, his words have impacted me more than ‘’my dads music” ever could. Not a wasted line. Not one emotion lost. Every storing for my heart pulled. Great music.
As they should! It's how I discovered this gem. They are great at bringing more "obscure" artists in to my music library. This young man is one example.
Jackie McMullan said she was listening to this song and the line she used was planting trees I'll never climb. I thought wow that's so deep. It's a great line
This video hits the mark and is by far your best music video to date. The harmony between the visuals, lyrics and music is perfect. Chef's kiss, really well done.
It isn't the breaths we take that matter it's the ones that take our breath.. get out and live and bring awareness of what truly matters in the light with love.. ty Brett you give me hope that there's still eyes and heart to see what matters the most ❤.
Brett, hi. I wanted to tell you that I fallen for your music!! I was watching "HOUSE" and heard "Ain't No Reason" your voice and words brought tears to my eyes. I had to find the season and episode and WOOHOO I found it! 😁 I am now hearing your other songs and your voice is like an angel to me.. Thank you! BENJI
"I've collected sunsets in my prime/now I'm planting trees I'll never climb" is a great great line.
This song should have at least 1 million views.
This song hits me so hard. My brown-eyed boy is now 20 and is in the Marines. Go out and see the world!
Not a single wasted lyric. As I get older, the line "Planting trees I'll never climb" brings mixed emotions. Time runs out eventually but the things we do can live on.
You make a valid point. I’m going thru that phase of life myself but it’s all good. Stay well friend!
SAME! 💔😍🌳
Getting old is inevitable. It’s how long you can keep the inevitable going is the key.
It's good to have Brett back, much better than the last two albums

How does someone get a volunteer? I need one of those.

BD will forever remain one of the all time greats.
I was thinking of my two little ones and listening to this song and I couldn’t help it…the tears just came. Thanks for the connection.
Same! Cried in a parking lot this morning . Don’t have any lyric tattoos but I probably will now.
Can we just admit this song is perfect?
Yeah. When Tracy Chapman did it .. go listen to Crossroads and tell me why he shouldn't be sued
@@achau9598 lmao, chill. Songs can use the same chords and sound similar and not be a rip off. The drums, melody, hook melody are all different.
yes

I do not know how I missed Bret Dennen until 2024 but HO LEE SHITE THIS IS 💥🔥💥🔥
I am old enough to remember Tom Petty - Learning to Fly.
I love this man. What a gift to our world. A troubadour of the highest standing. So grateful for his sharing his heart with us. Thank you Brett

The verse melody sounds a lot like Tracy Chapman’s “Crossroads”

Truth... Amazing lyrics
Lyrics:
Well, I started out down a dirty road
Started out all alone
And the sun went down as I crossed the hill
And the town lit up, the world got still
I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
Well, the good old days may not return
And the rocks might melt and the sea may burn
I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly)
But I ain't got wings (Learning to fly)
Coming down (Learning to fly)
Is the hardest thing (Learning to fly)
Well, some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I've started out for God knows where
I guess I'll know when I get there
I'm learning to fly around the clouds
But what goes up (Learning to fly)
Must come down
I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly)
But I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly)
Around the clouds
But what goes up (Learning to fly)
Must come down
I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly, learning to fly)
I'm learning to fly (Learning to fly, learning to fly)
(Learning to fly, learning to fly)
😁
