I have not heard a band alive today that embodies rock 'n' roll more in one song than the Kings do with this song! Thanks to Little Steven to turnin gme on to my new favorite group!
Ten years and a thousand plays later, and it sounds as great as spin #1. Hasn't been a better rock single since. If they truly are no/never more, a fitting epilogue to a great career.
Great Garage band with an authentic 60s sound. Still rockin' after all these years. I saw the CKs in the early 80s at NYU and also at Reds on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown, LI, NY. Great shows! I remember when they used to play almost every song from Stop! on WNYU's Mod Monday show. Long Live Garage Rock!!!
Hammered but had to hear this! Great tune! Think about it all the time! Yah! Whoop whoop! Edited to say that I was raised on 60's & Rock 'n Roll! Go Chesterfield Kings! Thanks for giving us something to rock to in 2021! 🤟🎵🎶
This band gives me hope for the future of music. They rock with all the intensity and cool of the greatest sixties' bands. Thanx for upload. Any chance of getting the studio version of "Mystery Trip", featuring Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen?
THE GreaTesT Rockn'Roll Band On F**kin' EARTH! Trust Me.... seen 'em Live every chance I got for over 30 YEARS.... THANKS to Greg & Andy & all of you for all the Music&Times. out RB
I've said it before, and I'll say it again . . . this song is absolutely the SH*T, and might be the best "modern" song SVZ has ever played on all the years of The Underground Garage. By the way, happy birthday to Steve, who turned, oh, 19 or so (LOL!) yesterday (11/22).
Why have I not heard of these guys when I was a teen in the 80`s? Probably cause I was in So. California where most of the music around there blew chunks. I bought the Psychedelic Sunrise LP just from hearing " Elevator Ride " on The Underground Garage and was blown away the whole album is great to boot! Way cool video. Looking for more albums from this band.
Hi Greg. Miss seeing your album of the day on F.B. but don't miss effin F.B. Great song here. Thinking about covering this in a new group I have going on. Hope all is well in your world. Rock on bro .
And, "Alll-RIGHT!!!" :-D --- "Up and Down" continues to be in rotation on LSUG, and was in there last night, on the unusually-good kickoff-to-Summer / Brian Wilson's birthday show. You can keep this'n' in there *forever*, for all I care, Steve!
I knew the band was some sort of kings, I had it for a bit but lost it and couldn't remember either title or artist. I heard this on ESPN'S Big Monday a few years ago and really liked it. I doubt I'll forget it again or lose it.
Hi, Balz (God, that sounds weird, but you chose your "handle" LOL!) --- that "someone" who transcribed part of the second verse would be me :-). Here comes the rest of it, as best I can make it out, in a separate post (this'll take me a couple of minutes if you happen to be on-line, so be patient). I'll be in several pieces, and anything appearing in brackets [ ] is something I'm uncertain about. Help me out here, people --- maybe somebody else has a better idea of what he's singin' there!
Second Verse: Sex, with hydrogen, running through my bloodstream Underneath the stairway, I hear the gypsies scream Brimstone hurricane, lost in the acid rain An' I can't take much mo' ! Deadlines, on-time, hangin' on a clothesline Down on the street, where they're lookin' for a mainline Asphalt / concrete / is dangerous ["medicine"? "ain't my sin" ?] An' I can't take much mo' !
Oh, at least the main comments are working --- most likely, it's just that the "Reply" function is Bumbled-Up. Anyway, thanks, BalzM . . . it's in E, then, and that's probably a C#*min* you're referring to (very standard stuff --- a "I-IV-V-minVI" progression).
Hi, Balz --- oh, no, it's no trouble at all, really, to transcribe it, 'cause I type very well, and even fairly rapidly (I wrote it up on Notepad and just copied it over here). My pleasure --- I have kind of a "history" of doing lyric transcriptions here on The YouChoob B-). That all started with the original music for the movie Vanishing Point (the 1971 theatrical release, not the TV remake), for which a lyric-sheet is essentially impossible to come-by.
Oh, yeah, hope you guys get it worked-up and post a vid of the cover here on YT. By the way, what's the chord-progression? I know it's not complicated, but I've never sat down and worked it out (I play several instruments, including guitar). Oh, and for anybody else out there, I am, again, inviting any help I/we can get on the "bumbled" lyrics that I couldn't fully make-out. Thanks for subscribing to me, by the way --- hope you find at least a few things there that interest you!
3rd Chorus (both choruses in succession): I been up, I been down All my friends are undergound I been up, I been down I can see things clearly now I been up, I been down, All my friends have come and gone I been up, I been down I can see things clearly now I been up . . .
Ooops! Sorry about that --- I'm chatting with somebody on G-chat, and forgot to put the 3rd verse (which is only the one stanza) before the 3rd chorus. Yeah, I know it's a pain in the butt to have to read this all from the bottom-up, but that's the way it is, with the boards here on YT. Enjoy! --- Steve
Great band. Heard them on Little Stevens Underground Garage. SERIOUSLY, can anyone get all the lyrics up here. My band wants to do this song, but we're having a hard time finding or figuring out a lot fo the words. Please help. Someone did the second verse which was great. More please!!!!!!!
2nd Chorus (note that the second line is different): I been up, I been down, All my friends have come and gone I been up, I been down I can see things clearly now I said "Up!", ohhh, I said "Up!" . . . (Guitar Solo)
@BalzMahoney Long-time-no, dude! I've *finally* got my hands on a guitar again (nice brand-new Fender CD-60CE), so I'm returning to my "former glory". Did you ever get the chords right to "Up and Down"? If you didn't, here's the scoop --- verses are A, E, *D*, and back to A. Now, the *chorus* is A, E, *F#min*, D, and back to A, etc. The "I been up, I said up . . ." is A, E, D, and then it goes into the solo. If your guitar's tuned right, you can play right along with the record! :-D
@stephenspinato did you find the lyrics to "Up and Down"? I hadn't been back to this page in a while, at least not to comment, and saw your note --- I transcribed the lyrics, myself (there's some stuff that remains unintelligible to me, and I'd welcome any corrections) for "BalzMahoney" awhile back, and they appear way-back-down in the comments, here. Also, if you play guitar, I just posted the chord-progressions for it in my reply to Mahoney --- even a beginner can strum along, at least! :-D
3rd Verse: Listen to the radio, don't know where t'go Ridin' on a cyclone, anywhere the wind blows Downbeat / sidewalk, can't hear m'self talk An' I can't take much mo' !
First Verse: I went downtown walkin' on the pavement Talked to the bum 'bout overthrowin' the government [Eight-track?]no more / smokestack / sidewalk An' I can't take much mo' ! A generation nowhere in our own country Outside the mainstream, we all dissipate ["disappear"? "are disciplined"?] [I'll back a van ?] but it brings me down An' I can't take much mo' !
1:10 "Sex, with hydrogen runnin' through my bloodstream, underneath the stairways I can hear the gypsy scream, 'Brimstone hurricane, lost in the acid rain, and I can't take much more !. . .' " Not just Stones, but Dylan, too --- that's what I call having a "distinguished family tree" :-D ! Got "jewels and binoculars hanging from the head of [their] mule", they do! :-))
First Chorus (they're different): I been up, I been down All my friends are undergound I been up, I been down I can see things clearly now I said "Up!" --- I said "Up"! . . .
Hey, is anybody else having trouble posting on here? May just be my local computer system --- was trying to reply to BalzMahoney about the chord-progression. ???
I have not heard a band alive today that embodies rock 'n' roll more in one song than the Kings do with this song! Thanks to Little Steven to turnin gme on to my new favorite group!
Thanx to Little Steven 🥰, many of these types of bands have emerged :):)
Great Garage Band from Rochester, NY. A fantastic mix between Stones, Faces and Dolls, with their own attitude
Ten years and a thousand plays later, and it sounds as great as spin #1. Hasn't been a better rock single since. If they truly are no/never more, a fitting epilogue to a great career.

I remember when they used to play almost every song from Stop! on WNYU's Mod Monday show. Long Live Garage Rock!!!

Band Rocks !!!!!!
go-go dancer: thanks Whitney!
E, B, A. There's a C# in the chorus I believe. I haven't played it in a couple weeks so I forgot, but I'm pretty sure the verse is E,B,A.
Apparently there are nineteen people in the world that dislike musical genius.

3rd Chorus (both choruses in succession):

Thanks guys! One, two, three...THUNDERBIRD 4! See you in the Underground Garage!
Has anyone else realised this takes the melody from The Factory’s “Gone” ?
Don't feel bad. Lester Bangs used to do that all the time.
Fucken Awesome!!!!!!
James Hetfield, from Metallica, said this is one of his new favorite bands... or something like that.
1:10 "Sex, with hydrogen runnin' through my bloodstream, underneath the stairways I can hear the gypsy scream, 'Brimstone hurricane, lost in the acid rain, and I can't take much more !. . .'
