- Joaquin Phoenix Reunited with Rescued Mother Cow & Calf for Earth Day
At his 2020 Oscars acceptance, Joaquin Phoenix spoke to the plight of mother cows and their babies. A day later, he helped liberate a calf and her mother from a Los Angeles slaughterhouse and brought them to Farm Sanctuary.
When Phoenix first met Liberty and Indigo (as they'd soon be named), he experienced them as beings in the grip of uncontrollable fear. Liberty had been trucked from a feedlot to the slaughterhouse where she gave birth. They were exhausted, dehydrated, and frightened.
Almost a year later, though, Phoenix got the chance to meet them as individuals. As Liberty and Indigo: warm, intelligent beings with their own unique lives, as animals experiencing autonomy and with the freedom to exhibit their natural behavior.
Phoenix reflected on the rescue and the environmental realities we're facing today: “We spend one day each year paying homage to our planet, Earth Day, but the other 364 days, we consume with impunity,” he said. “It's undeniable the detrimental impact that animal agriculture has on the environment. This simple act of rescuing Liberty and Indigo...in some ways, it's just as simple as sparing the lives of these creatures. But it's also an acknowledgment of not only the destruction they feel at our hands but the environment as a whole. By our actions, we either have the choice to continue to destroy other beings and the environment, or we begin the process of reversing the damage that we've done.”
With more than nine billion animals raised and slaughtered for human consumption each year in the U.S. alone, modern animal agriculture puts an incredible strain on natural resources such as land, water, and fossil fuel.
Climate change is imminent if we do not adopt a plant-based lifestyle. Every day is #EarthDay.

my admiration and love for Joaquin's activism is imminent. He uses his platform to speak for beautiful creatures who don't even have a voice. it was a beautiful, yet painful video. Been Vegan for almost three years, and I am 20 now. I didn't used to see the soul when looking at animal, but when you do everything changes. they are feeling, they are loving, they are beautiful.

So sad that people choose to ignore the emotions and horrific lives of farm animals. We start life with a wonder and interest in animals but society raises us to be cold and feel superior to these beautiful peaceful beings.

It’s amazing, and heart-warming such an initiative. But, it is kind of evil itself rescuing an animal, and being happy about it while the rest of the cows are being slaughtered, more like a double standard.
I do not want to sound pessimistic, but this is how I see it. It’s a kind of a fact.
A better approach would be to find a way, to stop animal slaughter all together as an initiative, by starting to educate people, and pushing them to have animal-less meat (ex. beyond meat).
I know that this is very impossible, because the world we live in isn’t perfect and will never be.
It’s all chaos, from all aspects. I don’t think its fixable.
I think of it as a creator’s miss and responsibility (if there’s one)
But the intention behind what you’ve done is really inspiring, and it really speaks to how down to earth, considerate and change-embracing you are.
