The uneasiness of the audience is almost palpable. Sadly, most will shrug it off by saying, "There goes Joaquin again proselytizing about animal rights." Because Joaquin's speech is being viewed by tens of millions of viewers, it can have an enormous impact.
@KamekoBruns You're entitled to your opinion of Phoenix but what's not subjective is that milk causes harm. You're paying for cows to be abused and killed way before their natural time for that glass of milk.

@@jakemyers5585 Instead of wondering, you could do some research :) If we stopped using up so much land to feed the animals you eat, you could grow enough food to feed the entire world :) Cutting out meat and dairy out of your diet, every meal, every day, for the rest of your life is WAY more impactful than taking a plane to a ceremony to win an award. The animal agriculture hurts the environment more than the ENTIRE transportation industry. Think about that for a second. Please, do your research, I know it's hard to see now, as I was like you just 2 years ago. I had to be open minded enough to want to learn and hear the facts.
@@LiveLifeLori (Sorry, I know this is a bit of an essay, but please do take the time to read it, I want to get my message out here) :) I am a junior in high school now, but as up until a year ago, I lived and worked on a 4th generation dairy farm of roughly 2000 head of Holstein Dairy Cattle with my family for sixteen years. My father was president of the National Dairy Board, which works closely with the USDA, for several years. We were forced to sell out last year. I have spent almost my whole life dairy farming, realistically 11+ years of experience from the time I was old enough to help out. My whole life, I have researched and been educated on the Dairy Industry and the impacts it has on the environment along with the precautions farmers take to lessen it. I was not wondering about the effect of Ag. on the environment, as I know this extremely well. I was simply wondering how much Phoenix actually knows about the Dairy Industry, and how many dairies he's actually visited and toured himself. I would bet that the answer is zero. He probably has gleaned his beliefs about the Dairy industry from the media, which is of course a very dangerous thing to do given the reliability of nearly all media sources, and a very easy trap to fall in to. I don't have a problem with him, he's an amazing actor, or him being a vegan, I have very good friends that are vegan, but I do not understand why he would openly and ignorantly bash dairy farming on stage at the Oscars. Celebrities often speak out against farmers, and their influence causes so many people, especially kids my age who may know nothing about farming, to hate farmers and speak out against them because the people that they look up to do. The reason why so much land is used to feed these animals instead of to feed humans is because it is not suitable to grow crops on for human consumption. The soils on these lands do not have the nutrients necessary to grow the caliber of crops necessary for human consumption. I would like to point out that yes, it is true that agriculture accounts for 14% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, but transportation accounts for slightly over 25% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. This may look alarming on the larger scale of things, but in the US, transportation accounts for 29% of greenhouse gas emissions, and Ag. accounts for only 2% of greenhouse gas emissions, as farmers in the US have taken precautions to lessen their impact, as well as laws have been put in place that regulate Ag. emissions. For example, all modern farm equipment in the US is required to burn DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) along with the normal diesel fuel. In short, DEF makes the emissions from modern farm equipment even CLEANER than the air already in the atmosphere. Phoenix also implies that animals are greatly mistreated by farmers, which is entirely untrue. It is not ever in a farmers best interest to treat an animal badly. A mistreated milk cow will not have nearly the yield that it would if it was treated correctly and respectfully. Less than 2% of the US population is directly involved in agriculture of any type. This includes growers (non-livestock farmers). To me, this is a very scary concept. Less 2% of the population is feeding the other 98+%. If things continue going in the direction they are going for the Dairy Industry and Agriculture as a whole, than there will not be enough food being produced on Earth by 2050 to support the predicted population at that time. But what really gets me is the people in these comment sections that call farmers out as evil, terrible people. I know that you did not say this, but so many other people here have, so I just would like to mention it anyways. I do not think that me and my family have spent our lives being evil and terrible people because we were Dairy Farmers. Instead, we have spent them tirelessly working to take care of our livestock, which is a farmer's livelihood, and to support the population, and to provide nutrition to the people in the world that need it. Please know that I am not trying to change your opinions on this subject, I know I probably can't, but I wanted to tell you my life story, I want you to hear from a real farmer so you know the goals of a real farmer, and I want people to know that the biggest goal of a farmer is to support the human race as well as to support their families and livelihoods. If you have any questions or anything at all, please feel free to comment back, I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. (PS: I really appreciate your kindness and civility about this argument/debate, as upon looking through the other comment strands I can see that most people have not handled this very maturely and civilly.)
Too many people are still ignorant about the cruelty of the dairy industry. I used to be. I used to think that cows just gave milk. It seems ridiculous now.
That was an amazing speech from beginning to end and it's frustrating to me that in Greece in the one television channel I watched the news in both cases they didn't show the main part of the sppeech about the dairy industry and speciesism... And I bet many news reports on various tv channels around the world avoided that part.
This just highlights how scared and powerful those industries are. They patronize the citizens and withhold information. It basically proves the point. At some point people will hear the truth and maybe the amount of work that has been done to keep it for them, will make them even more disgusted.
Instead of saying empty words he gave voice to the voiceless and you could feel the uneasiness of the audience because what he said was real and some people might even felt attacked personally as they realised that they are consciously or unconsciously making choices that are harmful for the animals and I think that this has made this speech even more meaningful because maybe some of the people will understand why they felt attacked and make a change starting from themselves and start spreading love and compassion
This is deeper than him speaking on the dairy industry. This is about him speaking on how humans feel they are dominant over all other living species. The Meat and Dairy industries are a huge part of the process...
Nothing says love and peace like removing half of the world's food source thereby starving hundreds of millions of people. Is there even such thing as a smart vegan?
@@scottscott2936 you really do need to do your research before responding. If all the food grown for farmed animals was grown for human consumption instead there would be no starving people in the world. There also wouldnt be animal cruelty on an industrial scale. And we would only use a fraction of the land we currently do to grow food, which means a lot of the land could be turned back to nature, that we can all enjoy.

I have nothing against Joachim as a man, i think he is one of the most remarkable men on the planet. But he is an actor and Hollywood is not animal friendly AT ALL, it is not environmental friendly at all either. There are weeks and weeks of footage of animal cruelty in Hollywood, and let's not forget the costumes which are one of the most polluting industry on the planet, not because those people need those clothes but to entertain an audience. The animals mistreated in films is also not to feed people but for entertainment. Shall we talk about the scene in Apocalypse now with the Bull which was not just horrific but filmed several times with different animals because the director wasn't satisfied with the cut (no pun intended), or Horse in Never ending story, the Tiger in Pi, Flipper, Save Willy or Orca which might be the most hypocritical of all. I mean really, a Hollywood actor making a speech on animal cruelty/ Isn't it a bit like doctor Mengele making a speech of child care. You could ask all these vegan influencers to help too! ruclips.net/video/97Wry4ppywQ/видео.html
@@mistersarcastic2648 Those "vegans" are malnourished! Does Joaquín Phoenix looks like them? Of course not, and he has been a vegan since he was 3. Don't try to fool people. The fact that you have convinced yourself that vegans are like the anorexic people you are showing in that video, won't convince any person with a litlle common sense.
Mister Sarcastic I’m not even going to watch. I will encourage you to do something that I tell my Grade 8 students...educate yourself before speaking so casually about a topic so that you don’t perpetuate lies or half truths.
@@ageebs5986 Years ago, I was on the path to becoming a vegan myself but that journey has ended. It turns out, the people who have educated me the most about veganism are the many EX-VEGAN people I know, and I'm very thankful that they have told me the truth. I wish they didn't have to learn the hard way through terrible suffering to both their health and well-being, but I've learned so much from their mistakes and regrets. Why are you unable to even watch a video which is simply a compilation of vegan gurus out there who aim to lead others into their way of life? I encourage you to keep your mind open before YOU start leading your students down the wrong path with lies or half truths.
Mister Sarcastic I won’t watch it because I don’t have any respect for ppl who troll. Trolling doesn’t make sense to me. We’ve been told half truths and lies our entire lives. You’ve drawn a lot from my very simple response without actually knowing any specifics about what or how I teach my students.
The uneasiness of the audience is almost palpable. This is a good thing only if people realize that this discomfort comes from being exposed to a harsh truth which forces them to come to terms with their harmful actions. Sadly, most will shrug it off by saying, "There goes Joaquin again proselytizing about animal rights." But the enlightened few will fully examine the reasons behind their discomfort and find their way towards veganism. Because Joaquin's speech is being viewed by tens of millions of viewers, it can have an enormous impact.
Yes, this is so well said!! Anything worth learning or unlearning comes with a degree of discomfort. That's how you know it matters 🌱

Beautifully expressed, Todd! I totally agree with you. Vegan is absolutely the best choice anyone can make, but many just don´t like to hear it.

@@LiveLifeLori
(Sorry, I know this is a bit of an essay, but please do take the time to read it, I want to get my message out here) :)
I am a junior in high school now, but as up until a year ago, I lived and worked on a 4th generation dairy farm of roughly 2000 head of Holstein Dairy Cattle with my family for sixteen years.

That was an amazing speech from beginning to end and it's frustrating to me that in Greece in the one television channel I watched the news in both cases they didn't show the main part of the sppeech about the dairy industry and speciesism... And I bet many news reports on various tv channels around the world avoided that part.
Ditto for Italy, so my AV sisters and brothers are saying on WhatsApp
Whoa - good to know. Share this with your friends who may have missed it then!
Oh yikes. They are scared
Same in Spain! 🤦♀️

@@scottscott2936 you really do need to do your research before responding. If all the food grown for farmed animals was grown for human consumption instead there would be no starving people in the world. There also wouldnt be animal cruelty on an industrial scale. But, and you might hate me for that, in spite of how much i love Joachim's speech and how important i believe that it is. I can't help but have a problem with who made that speech. I mean really, a Hollywood actor making a speech on animal cruelty/
Isn't it a bit like doctor Mengele making a speech of child care.
