    Everyone in comments asking how much ice does it use. Just get some Zip-lock freezer bags..fill with water..make sure outside of bag is dry and a couple paper towels between (so they don't stick together) and lay in the freezer..once frozen put in ice chest. Make a double batch and as they thaw in the chest replace with the frozen ones and put the thawed ones back in the freezer!

    I've built several over the years and one thing that I learned was that ice lasts twice as long if it's not setting in water. I'd suggest a grid or mesh to suspend the ice up off the water and in direct contact with the coils with some ice in the bottom with the water. Pretty clean build though, good work!

    I would also Isolate the water ice mix from having the fan blow on it with a sheet of insulation
    so it last longer - Isolating the coils in a tube where the air blows throw the tube with the coil in will also help -- of course this is all fine me saying this as I have never built one so just theory.

    I've been watching alot of these as my job has me sitting idle in a vehicle for a long time. I see a constant issue with warm air coming in and have been thinking about this. As I'm using mine in a vehicle I only need one or 2 vents so I got to thinking. Take the life mount fan and vent setup and make the vent a t pipe. By doing this I have airflow to the front and back. In addition this setup would have one side of the vent exiting over the fan which would cook the incoming air

    I made one of these recently. I have a 48qt chest that holds the ice/water with a small pump inside that pumps the cold water to a separate smaller air box 12qt cooler blower box that has a heater core inside of it and a 4" 270 cfm bilge pump/fan. I took it for a test run in 105 degree temps on a 120 mile trip in the backseat of an old mustang. It worked well but I went through three 8 lb.bags of ice. I am thinking of insulating the ice cooler better and thinking of making it into a closed loop system with copper tubing. Maybe have 2 separate compartments and elevating the copper coils keeping them on the ice and away from the lower warmer melted ice water. I'm adding a 4" flexible hose to the blower box an attach a 4" PVC T to direct the cold air up to the left and right front seats. IDK yet, but at least it worked fairly well and it was fun to build and didn't turn out to be a waste of time.

    Idea, design a V-twin stirling cold gas engine with a fan and on one fly wheel to draw air through a condensing coil to cool the air. A rewired drum motor generator with magnetic bearings on the other fly wheel to generate the volts needed to power the Helium sealed cylinder stirling cold piston that turns the gases in the atmosphere into a super cold Liquid that fills a insulated resivor with a bell siphon that fills the condensing coil with the liquid air boil off being feed back to the cold piston to reform the liquid atmosphere. The device starts up using a organic carbon power cell to generate the liquid atmosphere then the V-twin stirling cold gas piston engine starts up and spins the drum motor generator that changes the carbon power cell back up and then shuts off power to cell ounce charged while providing the volts needed to operate the stirling helium cold piston that generates the liquid air to keep the cycle going. Free air conditioning? 😉😊

    A good idea maybe: Pre-cool air going into ice chest. That way you're not blowing hot room temperature air into ice chest. Maybe pre-cool air by using your indirect evap to cool off water to cold air box with three PC radiators and duct the cold air to blow in ice chest. That way you have pre-cooled cold air going into ice chest and keeping the ice from melting so quickly . Just an idea but I'm not a thermodynamic expert and there might be air flow imbalances in my idea

    I don't know if it's this simple, but since you're not concerned with "conditioning" -- i'e.' dehumidifying/pulling the heat OUT of -- the room air, could you enclose the fan and run one of the outlets to it thereby having a recirculating system somewhat like a home AC has, and reduce the ice melting time by not having to cool the incoming room temp air?

    • @docink6175
      @docink6175 6 лет назад +2

      Yosef, swamp coolers like this work by chilling water and spraying droplets into the air, this works very well in dry climates (very low humidity) but not so well in areas with high humidity , the cool humid air contacts the hot humid air and loses its cool very quickly only adding to the humidity, the added moisture aids in mold growth as well so you need to be sure to keep the area ventilated. I have used a small swamp cooler in my truck during the summer and it does work to cool the interior several degrees and feels good blowing on me but I had to be sure to wipe down the dashboard and windows and leave the windows open to air out the truck . So they DO work here just not very effectively and the side effects, for lack of a better term, are worse than dealing with the heat IE everything damp and clammy which can quickly turn to musty and moldy. I use a mist system for my patio and it feels cooler than the ambient temp but you are quickly covered in water droplets even with several fans blowing

    • @MrPir84free
      @MrPir84free 6 лет назад +3

      BTW: This is not really a swamp cooler. Humidity will increase due to evaporation; but evaporative cooling is not what is cooling the air.

Thinking I'm going to check the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics to see what they note and study what can be a re-usable process even if like having to make a solar still or maybe even a evaporative cooler to re-collect the crystals to re-use in a continuous cycle where at least less water would be needed to rinse the filter maybe. Poor the ice in and close it ,this way the air doesn't hit the ice and melt it fast.

    homemade newcomen steam engine will produce the energy to power a non electrical centrifugal pump and a twin walking engine will produce enough for a natural air pump. that can be attached to a cooler box that has glass rods that act as evaporative coolers. the pump lets water fall onto the glass while air blows down onto the water and the copper coils, cooling them tremendously. when they reach the desired outlet of the pipes, you have free, freezing temps with no electricity and no ice. boiling water to get ice cold air.

      newcomen steam engine with twin arms and twin flywheels can have a centrifugal water pump attached to it. when the steam engine gets moving, the centrifugal pump will drag water up and pour it in any desired region. Instead of a cardboard, fiber, or other evaporative cooling pad, you can use glass pieces as a sort of filter/channel. drop the water on it using the centrifugal pump water pipe and position the newcomen engines other flywheel to another centrifugal air pump this time. using this guys copper method and my glass method you can have a high humidity and yet the temperature changes will increase until you're reaching extremely cold temperatures as copper is very sensitive to temp changes and the glass rod water fan will change the temp. eventually you will start to reach freezing temperatures by boiling water. is that a better explanation? if not sorry

    Cool...you could also just use the PVC stand in place of the clear tubing to run the water to the copper tubing too just formatted a little differently I guess

    • @cwtjones

      I try that with an radiator from old AIO water cooler for cpu. The air is really chilling, but the water that go back to the icebox melt the ice rather quickly. 2kg of ice lasted less than 1 hour.

    Just make a sealed container where dry ice is used then its cooling ability is transferred through the fins of the sealed container and a vent on the inner sealed container to vent c02 off the dry ice outside and have the blower blowing on the outside of where the dry ice is sealed....get all the cooling ability of a -30 degree dry ice block and co2 gets vented outside....

    wouldnt be better to have the ice isolated from the part where the spirals are so the air wont blow over the ice melting it faster?

      my idea too. Thinking either run the air through a duct with coil inside (condensation issues?) or a 2nd floor to separate the two chambers; ice below, airflow+coil above.

    Thanks for sharing. It is a great design. However, I am thinking about two ice boxes, one for the ice and the pump and one for the coil and fan - in the hope for the ice last longer. Do you think it would work? Thanks again.

    • @omardavis8598

      Hien Nguyen that won't work the coils have to be in the same chamber

    • @paulandrews5611
      @paulandrews5611 6 лет назад +2

      Omar Davis, the coils have to be in the same chamber as what? If you use enough coils you can pump the ice water from one cooler to the coils in another cooler. This way the hot outside air is not flowing directly on the ice and water, causing it to heat up faster and melt. You would definitely need more copper tubing then this example for it to be effective.

    What if you dis the reverse, with larger diameter copper coils the air runs through that's submerged in ice water?
    Also, would love to see one that's for a rotomolded cooler (yeti type) but doesnt ruin the cooler. Rather is sealed between the lid and body with it half open.

    So does the coil keep the ice from melting so fast

    • @Cenobite1
      @Cenobite1 4 года назад

      Coil is copper and the copper gets chilled by the ice water and creates a greater surface area for the incoming air to be cooled before exiting the cooler. Doesn't really prolong the lifespan of the ice.

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  3 года назад

      hi there. the copper coils are basically acting as a heat exchanger. they spread out 'the cool' so there is more cool surface area. that helps cool the air
