  • The 2020 Ford Explorer & Edge are the first SUVs to receive the performance ST badge. Let me compare what is under the hood when it comes to their turbocharged power plants, and sophisticated AWD systems. Both of these Ford Performance SUVs have the big brake pkg. On the inside you will find redesigned interiors and technology for both. Is the 2020 Explorer ST the BETTER Ford Performance SUV over the Edge ST?

The Explorer ST has 400 horsepower and if you've driven one. No need to ask questions about performance parts. After a test drive with my son. He purchased a gray/black interior ST. It's so much better than the previous model in looks (interior and exterior), technology, passenger room and performance. It's the perfect size for his family, yet gives him the performance to have some fun when he's without the kids. It appears he didn't find any Zonks and he spent a full day with the Explorer before making the purchase and trading in his Ram Crew cab for a vehicle with an MSRP $58,000 for $49,900. I guess Zonks are personal preferences and some Zonk changes would likely raise the vehicle pricing. Maybe thats why I often disagree with them. I do agree the third row should have USB ports. My wife owns an Edge Sport which was the predecessor to the ST. It a great midsize SUV. No service issues after 35,000 miles and plenty of technology and power. Ford has done a great job with their SUV lineup.

I just sold my 2019 Edge ST to buy an Explorer ST. After I originally purchased the Edge I found that there are not many aftermarket performances upgrades for this vehicle. However, the explorer has a bunch and you can compete with the 392 SRT Durango with a simple tune upgrade. The Edge hasn’t quite got the following for tuners and aftermarket makers to invest in these parts. But I did like my Edge. Plenty of power for daily driving.

Just traded my 2019 Edge ST for a 2020 Explorer ST - oddly the exact same colors in your video. The Edge ST is a great vehicle and had a blast driving it with no issues. Unfortunately a woman in a Costco parking lot came up to me and said she thought my Edge was cute and pretty. Cute and pretty? Thought the ST was suppose to have somewhat of a bad ass attitude. So I got the Explorer ST and so far great in driving it. Plenty of room and an incredible smooth ride with real power when applied. Rear sharpe looking vehicle. Nice video.

Iam surrounded by Ford executives and engineers as I live in Ann Arbor. Two of them have 2020 Explorers and they also rave about them. Again, no issues for me. The paint and fit are first class. I have an Edge ST coming up on a year in April and like it overall. I'm used to driving larger vehicles (I traded a Raptor) so the Edge is a lot of fun to drive. I also like the fact that it has the old style backup camera with full rear view without pushing buttons to make that happen. I'm hoping to be able to trade after end of this year for Explorer ST, Platinum or Aviator Reserve 1. Hopefully, by that time, the issues they've been having will be cleared up by then. On the other hand, the rebates are good on the Explorer right now. Easily can get $5k off plus I have X plan.

Great video. Just picked up a 2020 Edge ST loaded up with everything but the 21 inch wheel/brake package, and with only 9k miles for $36k. Traded in my 2014 Edge SE and this thing is in a whole different stratosphere. Originally went to look at the Bronco and Bronco Sport. After seeing the absurd markups on the Bronco and sitting in the $33k Bronco Sport, Big Bend, which looks and feels like a glorified Escape, I said thanks but no thanks. Those 2 are both WAY overpriced, but the fact that the Edge ST is only 8K cheaper than the very newly designed in comparison Explorer ST with newer tech is a complete miscue by Ford. If I were going to spend 58K on that Explorer, I would probably just splurge a little more and make it a Lincoln Aviator with the same 400hp ecoboost engine.

Excellent review. As the market continues to chase after SUV presentations, it makes sense for automakers to continue moving their production in that direction, but I'm very glad that they've also managed to still inject some spirit into them as well. The Explorer especially demonstrates this, given that it can accelerate surprisingly quick. This could actually be considered a sleeper of sorts. It can run almost in lock step through the quarter mile with a 5.7 challenger. I personally think that the Explorer is vastly better looking than the Edge.

I’ll keep my Toyota Highlander XSE. Repeat customer to Walker Ford and they are great but I went to Toyota for a reason. After 3 motors in an F150 and than a new purchase F150 that was junk as well I ran away from the brand they sell. Wish the Walkers would consider selling other brands other than Ford as their staff is amazing.

The Edge ST is another vehicle I was considering, the most. Rumors are that there will be a RS version in the future. I am watching now so I am interested in your conclusion. I was also considering buying another Focus RS but didn’t know if that makes sense for me. Hopefully the Edge ST will be at the Chicago Auto Show this year. You are reviewing the Rapid Red which I want.

I know Compact Discs are considered outdated now but I find it interesting that the current Mustang and Explorer seen here both do not have a CD player but the Edge still does lol.
The Edge has a better interior LCD screen in teh center console, the stuck on tablet look is dumb.
I feel like the Edge is way overpriced, it has no business being in the $50,000 dollar range at all whatsoever no way Jose.

The gloss black exterior A pillar trim piece on the Explorer looks good but on my 2012 Explorer it ended up flying off my vehicle one day at highway speed. The rubber gasket where it connects to the windshield rotted in the FL sun and then wind got under the trim piece. I was a Ford guy until that vehicle and sold it just over 2 years ago with 100,000 miles. I had lot of issues with interior wear and tear that I never had an my F-150s, Ecoboost turbo failure, bad starter, bad torque converter, and lots of small issues.

As an owner of the 2020 Explorer ST, I would agree with most of your "zonks". Especially the lack of third row USB ports and the use of the hood prop rod. Now, a couple of zonks I disagree with...paddle shifters..who cares, 99% of buyers will NEVER use those, the second zonk I disagree with are the exhaust tips. I LOVE the fact that the exhaust doesn't actually come out the chrome tips...MUCH easier to keep clean.
    Enjoyed the video however.

I thought the explorer only got the 4 banger turbo. Really nice to see this one has the 3.0 eco. Definitely the explorer all the way with its primary drive based on the rear wheels. To me the big zonk is MSRP. Its as much as a X5 40i. Yikes.

  • @stephenhendricks103

Explorer: Laughable MSRP for the ST and Platinum trims. And that's why they're already being discounted by $5000 or more by dealers here in the Seattle area. The RWD and RWD biased AWD system is a plus but if you're hoping for a significant advantage in terms of towing compared to FWD platforms, forget it. At a maximum of 5300-5600 tow rating, that's a measly 300-600 more than several competitors. Even worse, a moderately options Lincoln Aviator (Reserve) at $4K-$8K more offers a 6700 lb tow rating and a far better interior.
Edge: Only slightly less laughable MSRP. At 188" long, it falls at the lower end of midsize SUV's. That's convenient but like most others of that size it seats five, not six or seven. Putting the ST badge on what had been the Edge Sport added some pounds and what Ford claims is better suspension and a bit more (not noticeable) HP. Bad news is the Edge ST is not as quick as the predecessor Sport.
Bottom line. Each is a vehicle that appeals to Ford loyalists and fleet buyers.
