It was actually late 70s and early 80s that this all started. I was born in 1975. My first album I got was Shout at the Devil- Motley Crue. ACDC Sabbath Ozzy and the punk movement brought in the end of hippy drippy love and more into Vampire horror culture ghosts and ghouls and whatnot. Media was very much drilling these Horror movies and bands down our throat. Early 90s was more the begginging of Grunge and the end of Hair bands.

As a child in the early 90s I remember hearing adults talking about “satanists” who would steal cats and kill them up in the hills near my house (I grew up in Kentucky) and I would get chills. Every night I made sure my precious kitty Mars Blackman was safely in my bed before I went to sleep. It was a strange time to be a kid! RIP to those two dead men and the innocent animals. I arrested a guy once for ADW with a hammer. After running his criminal history, I discovered he had been arrested in about 30 major US cities. During the lengthy booking process, he started complaining about being hungry. I offered him my food if he would tell me the stories behind his previous arrests. He agreed and told me how he traveled with carnivals and circuses, how every time he got arrested he’d do his time and jump in with another traveling circus or carnival. We talked for about an hour and a half about the crimes he was arrested for.

My ex husband caught a carny stalking my little sister, i thought he was imagining it, but we acted like we didn't see him and he was behind or to the side of us. My husband snatched him up and told him to get lost. Knowing what I know now, we should have told the police. The carnival can be a dangerous place.

I was 9-19 during the 80's. I remember all the fear mongering with the Satanic Panic. I was fascinated by it. Not the evil, but the esoteric nature of the occult. I got information about Satan sent to me from churches advertising information about Satanism. It was a way of learning more about the subject. I took out books at the school library. I bought books and got a spirit board. The best thing I got from it was learning about herbal treatments. All that fear mongering did was make me want to do it more. Since the Bible is not fact, it is not literal therefore there isn't Satan, nothing happened because of my practice. I am still fascinated by the occult and what people believe they can do with it. I don't believe in a personal God but I am open to the possibility of an afterlife.

I'm Australian, so we didn't go through the Satanic Panic thing, but heard about it all on the news. I was a teenager at the start of it, and a massive heavy metal fan ( still am, even as a 52 year old grandmother) !
I was also into Satanism and the "Black Arts", and still follow some of the beliefs to this day. But in no way whatsoever would I ever do anything like animal cruelty, or any type of sacrifice involving innocent people. That has nothing to do with the Church of Satan, or the Black Arts. The people that do these things are psychopaths, and use these things as an excuse for their disgusting and evil behaviour! They would more than likely done these types of horrific crimes anyway.

I was raised in a Christian cult (the IBLP) during the 90s era of Satanic Panic. The crazy was real even on a personal level. The Satanic Panic was widespread, but there's not a lot of talk about how it affected individuals and families. I wasn't allowed to watch Disney movies because they had magic. Pokemon were demons that possessed you with violence. No "rock" music was allowed, and in fact I had a CD that had an *instrumental* version of Unchained Melody on it, and that was taken away because it had some drum action in the final chorus and, as my mother said, "an off beat that can allow Satan to slip into your heart and take over." It was a miserable fucking existence because everything was evil and a gateway to devil worship. There's a damn good reason that I'm a very happy lesbian pagan now.

@@juliecreaser878 There's a major, major difference between a conservative Christian home and a culty abuse hellscape. Don't act like you know my life. And of course I'm responsible for my choices now, and I take responsibility for them and when I make bad choices I do my best to fix it and do better. I'm happy as a person and proud of who I've become, and I don't blame my parents for anything except abusing my brother and I and permanently scarring our brain development as children. Is that okay? Can I blame them for their choices that hurt me, or was it my choice to be hurt by the abuse and stay in an abusive situation where I was beaten, belittled, gaslit, manipulated, lied to, neglected, starved, etc? I mean, I could have just left, right? At the tender age from birth to 13, I could have made the choice to escape my situation. And how dare you call a home of cultic abuse a "conservative Christian" home. That's a disgustingly twisted view.

I knew people that withdrew money from their banks, saved all their info on floppys and external drives. People stocking up on food and water. Buying guns and ammunition.
The 80’s though? I remember the panic was real. I was coming of age and witnessed the panic first hand. Our parent’s Fear over cults and rock music. The night stalker Richard Ramirez and teenage drug use and suicides increasing. The hate towards Ronald Reagan and the religious right hypocrisy. I think talk shows had a lot to do with spreading of fear. Geraldo, Sally Jesse Raphael, Morton Downey, and Phil Donahue. People playing with Ouija boards and some of my own friends dabbling with the occult.

So, I gotta ask...were you into any of the taboo subject materials, ie. Heavy metal, wearing lots of band t-shirts, or black, being generally creepy? I was class of 97, & up until my freshman year, I was guilty of pretty much all of the above, ({openly}, note, I was also in SE OK, so they may have just been stuck in late 80s Satanic Panic mindset) I decided to not be so outspoken on my backwards christian beliefs, & start buying more colorful attire, so I could date girls. I may actually still be discreetly even more creepy in the dark philosophy now, but I keep that on a need to know basis. Anyway, what I was getting at was, you said you didn't remember the panic being a thing in the 90s. As I recall, the whole thing was pretty much proven to be a total fabrication around 1992, (I was only 13, so I may be misremembering) but, I definitely remember the hypercritical scrutiny from small town Okies, up until 1996ish

Ozzy and Black Sabbath were strictly speaking not Satanic despite basing a lot of their career and music around this subject. It was later 'black metal' bands such as Burzum and Mayhem who embodied this creed wholeheartedly rather than merely flirting with it. Ozzy and Sabbath's take on it was more in line with the way it was portrayed in Hammer horror films and Dennis Wheatley novels - basically they viewed it as a dangerous path that leads to madness and ultimate destruction. Songs such as 'war pigs' and 'black sabbath' acted as warnings against messing around with the occult and things you do not understand (which were popular social trends in the 70s and 80s) if you actually listen to the lyrics. Compared to what was to come later, much maligned bands of the time such as Judas priest, AC/DC and Iron Maiden were quite restrained and innocent by comparison

Okay but I totally disagree with the West Memphis 3 case. I was an ardent supporter of them at the beginning but after some research (A LOT of research) and I saw all of the things that were left out of the documentary, I realized I was duped. They interviewed a lot of suspects and the boys were not on their radar for some time. It wasn't due to satanic panic. There are a lot of people in the region that practice the Wicca religion or satanism (more so than u would think). It was due to the fact that Echols had some very disturbing habits including the killing of animals and bullying/stalking of local children. They also were not acquitted or exonerated as everyone said. They took an Alfred Plea which basically says they aren't saying they're guilty but rather that enough evidence exists that they likely would have been found guilty at trial. They took the deal for immediate release instead of risking another trial. This was likely done to shut their supporters up. Its sad and again I used to support them and still believe that an unholy amount of people are in prison despite being innocent. HBO framed the whole documentary to make it appear that a God fearing town attacked them for wearing black. Read 'A Case Against the West Memphis 3." Its very underrated but incredibly informative. Be careful what u read or watch. Its not always how u think it is. The only one I could think may be innocent would be Jason Baldwin. The other two (and possibly one more who was never even brought up in the documentary) definitely

Music, games and TV shows sure don't _make_ people murderes or satanists or whatever, but they still have an influence one way or the other, especially on young impressionable kids. I mean, the first kid started to look into satanic symbols because he saw them on an album cover at first, right? There are underlying issues, but we can't deny that outside influences and exposure to certain ideas that align with interests contributes to the "final product". That's why ratings are a thing, some things are better not be consumed at a certain age.
