      @@misterfluffkins2161 Objectively this is not that impressive, is an easy melody and the chords are not complex, any good musician can do the same, while the thing that Stephen Wiltshire does is something truly unique, and it doesn't matter how good of an artist someone is, it would be impossible to replicate.
      With this im not trying to downplay what Lara does, she is a really good musician, and it is impressive, but it isn't in the same league as what Stephen does.
      You should watch Derek Paravicini, he is a pianist who can play everything he hears perfectly, even the most complex pieces, so Derek would be the music equivalent of Stephen.

      @@NicoR24601
      My Chemical Romance's vocal melodies are a lot more complex than people think; Maybe others aren't able to hear the combinations and all, but they're there on the original song; I agree with you that, objectively, her rendition wasn't as impressive as Stephen's playing, however, you didn't make clear whether you were referring to her rendition or My Chem's song when you called that, an, "easy melody," and the latter would be straight wrong; So, I'm making sure to point this out for anyone else who may have misunderstood; To be fair to her, also, though, she only listened to snippets, rather than the entire song, which makes sense why she would only get the foundational, non-complex chords out of the song and the baseline vocal melody that she adapted onto the piano;
      If Stephen only saw snippets of an image he was going to paint, would he be able to recreate the entire non-snippeted image accurately? This is the base of what I mean;
      All of the piano renditions of this song I've listened to have usually attempted to adapt the vocal melody, mostly, into their piano, or one of the individual parts of the instrumental melody, whilst no one has ever fully integrated all of the instrumental & vocal melodies together into a piano rendition; Hopefully, I may listen to one, one day;
      Also, I wouldn't be so quick to use the word, "impossible," here; Some fella' out there may one day surpass Stephen's ability; I mean, people probably thought the ability to do what Stephen does was, "impossible," at one point too; And thanks for the link;!!

    Blown away that she clicked through the song and heard the bridge chord progression then skipped later and heard it and recognized it had shifted key so she nailed it in her run-through. Charles S well as a huge fan of MCR and their solo stuff, I have to disagree. Yes there were some bad performances, but there were much more performances that were amazing. Unfortunately I cannot say, that I have my own experience with MCR live, but I was at Gerard Way's solo concert and he was absolutely amazing. Yes, he isn't the best singer out there, but he's doing alright. And he was always more about the lyrics and emotions anyway. And as for the rest, I never noticed in any video that they would fuck up much. Instrumentals were usually very well played, so I don't know what you're talking about. Of course they can't match this girl's talent, but her talent is so rare that it really doesn't matter honestly

      Yes, but she still had to learn the instrumental skills to use her synthesia as adventage and vice versa had to learn to use her synthesia as adventage for practicing her skills. Yet it‘s obviously something quite special that‘s hardly comparable to „normal“ musicians.
      So once again for all „normal“ musicians out there:
      Studies regarding talent vs. deliberate practice show that „good musicians“ or in fact geniuses in every field may be talented, but also put way more effort into studying their subject. Their amount of practice exceeds the amount of average people and experts by multiple times. Many of these studies suggest that talent just makes all this practice more enjoyable and rewarding especially at a young age (when learning is most effective) because you‘re obviously rewarded with progress quite easily. But the determination to keep on pushing your boundaries despite your maybe already excellent level of skill or knowledge is of huge importance and plays a central role no matter how talented you are.
      So just go for it. Take your time and do it. You may not learn and progress as fast as someone talented, someone with synthesia or as easily as you would have ten oder fifteen years ago, but still you will progress and are able to reach a level of skill you most definitally wouldn‘t believe!

    Synesthysia obviously isn't the whole story. Years of practice to get mechanics locked down allow her to quickly translate what she senses into the hand movements. Also, left hand is very simply playing the an octave of each chord's base note or octave + the fifth, which is a common improv strategy to sound big/complicated without too much work.
    Talented, but do not be discouraged, young pianists.

      I'm sorry. Anything worthwhile takes a long time to learn. They say that any person who has achieved mastery (of anything particular skill) has put in 10,000 hours of effort and practice...
      Some say "I quit"
      Some choose to say "I'm going to chew away at that one hour at a time." Imagine what would change in your life if you spent one hour a day doing "that thing" that would take you that more step towards a dream. That's how masters (like lara) got *started*.
      How you choose to react to that is entirely up to you.
      I know how I reacted :D

      @@benzerka506 Oh for sure!
      Not to belabor your point but.. let me give you an example... I've been driving since I was 16. Now I'm MUCH older. I probably have well in-excess of 10k hrs behind the wheel. Do I think I can beat the likes Nigel Mansell, Michael Walltrip or Ken Block in a race????
      Fuck no ahahhahaha.
      There is much more to learning a skill than just "putting in time". I'm sure you are familiar with the works of Barbara Oakley, Carol Dwek, Dr Angela Duckworth and even the likes of Jocko Willink and David Goggins will attest to the fact that what you are saying is 100% true.
      Meaningful directed practice, having a growth mindset, displaying grit, and personal discipline and ownership all these (and a healthy dose of luck) all contribute to success and eventual Mastery.
