I liked the D 190 E!! Had a little more snap and high-end on the snare, and on guitar, it didn’t have that hair on the top end like the 57. I felt like the high-end was just more straight and cutting on the D 190 E, without the sizzle. 👍🏻👍🏻
PS….. what are those clips that you have on the SM 57? Those look really cool, and solid!! Thanks bud 😊

Agreed, 100%. The AKG sounds better with more presence. The SM57s do sound good and have their purpose, but I can hear the scooped midrange.

That’s right you can hear the presence straight away.

Best akg d190. More clean mid range, more transparent. Good video thanks!

    A is better to me!!
The 57’s have more presence to me. More beefy.
The other mics are clearer but sound thin.

To my ear the D190 had a brighter, less muted, sound - it seems to better capture the sound of the snare drum. The SM57 sounded dull by comparison.
However, if the purpose of recording is to capture a sound for blending with other sounds, then the question isn't how well will the microphone capture the sound of the snare.
The question becomes how will you be intending to mix/blend the sounds that you want to be mixing. What parts of the sound will you be wanting to keep vs discard in order to achieve the blend/mix. Isn't it better to capture the audio in the microphone and then do as little to it afterwards as you can get away with doing?
It seems to me that most folk just want enough of the brilliance of the snare to know it is a snare drum, and they don't want it to interrupt the vocals even tho' they may want it to be prominent in the mix.
I think I'd want the D190 to record the side drums of a pipe band - because people in pipe bands perceive a crisp, sharply cracking side drum as a good side drum. But that quality is not desired in the snare drum of a rock band.
    What are your thoughts?

I think you’re spot on with your assessment. I’ve always noticed the “smudged” mids of a SM-57. It’s a classic and works.
The D190 doesn’t have the smudged mids like the 57, but it does come across as brighter. I’d like to compare the frequency charts for both.
      Thank you!

Love the D190......I've got 6 of 'em and they're a good, solid all rounder. Sound good on acoustic guitar too, if you find the sweet spot.

57 is the sound of rock and roll

Am enjoying the resurgence of the D-19.... Hope AKG brings it back.

I never heard a D19 in person. I’d like to try one someday.

57s sounded good on riffs, D190 had better presence on licks.

Yes I agree, both work well. One just sounds more open with more presence.

I use my D190 as a mono OH. It compress a lot.

Mic's don't really compress per say. Especially not on mid/far field micing. You can saturate/distort a mic's capsule, but usually Dynamic mic's are pretty hard to distort. It would usually be a condenser on say a loud guitar amp, snare etc, and it's not usually pleasing. You can overdrive a mic pre to some extent, if its really overdriven it's also not typically pleasing either.

Not per say. However, a dynamic capsule is a kind of damped mass-spring system and a capsule generates current when a coil is moving. That is, I think it does not "react" as fast to transient as a condenser capsule. It willl take some time to get a mass to move.

J'ai le même micro AKG dans sa boite, avec la pince micro à vendre pour 100 €. Il a très peu servi.
I have the same AKG microphone in its box, with the microphone clamp for sale for €100. It has had very little use.

How could you not hear that out-of-tune D chord?

    • @RiotHomeRecording
      @RiotHomeRecording  10 месяцев назад +7

It’s the way I’m holding the chord. It’s not that I can’t hear it, it’s that I don’t care as much as you do zlander. 😂
      I’m comparing mics not tracking.

@@RiotHomeRecording If you say so. It would have been 10 seconds of tuning time for a better video.
