Love this. I recently picked up a pair of distressors. Great tip re the link switch. They just make everything sound better. I have a few other pieces of outboard gear. Dbx 160 and yamaha spx90 being the coolest
Dbx 160 on kick for mixing. Dbx 160 into a Distressor on vocals for tracking. Distressor on snare for mixing. Distressor on drum room for tracking or mixing. Distressor or Dbx 160 for bass tracking or mixing. ^^^^ this just works easily. Both comps work on sooo many things!!!
@@RiotHomeRecording very cool, the Distressor brings a lot out of it, it sounds very full. I’ve used the EV 635a for that duty, which I like, because it’s rolled off in the high end and doesn’t have much low end, so you’re left with a nice mid range.
what in your opinion would be the best way to get to a console sound if we can't afford an mci console. I seen how you used a custom summing mixer in a different video and it sounded great. Do you have info on other summing mixers or techniques to get there
Hello, I go over this exact question in a few of my videos, here’s a video where I explain exactly what your asking around the 29 minute mark. ruclips.net/video/a-yr_5gLgXI/видео.htmlsi=R1x6OCbE8cYLSabw There’s lots if summing mixer options out there, but like consoles very few will get you a good sound. I’ve had many summing mixers before I decided to build my own. And out of all of the ones I had I’d say the mix 690 was pretty good. It doesn’t have the size in sound and wideness like a full console gives, but it does sound really good. Another thing worth mentioning is, if your tracks are recorded right you should have no problem mixing them on pretty much any decent system. Hope this helps Steve
thanks a bunch i truly respect your thoroughness and passion when it comes to this stuff, would love to see you break this specific situation down getting a console sound using summing mixers/preamps in the future sometime, your mixes are amazing@@RiotHomeRecording
It’s an 1976 Mci 428 console. It lived in 4th street recording studio it’s entire life before I bought it. They did 15 gold and platinum albums on this console while at 4th street recording in Santa Monica.

Sounds great!!! What mic do you like to use for the crotch mic technique? 👍🏻👍🏻
I think I just used an SM-57 for the crotch mic on this session. I’m pretty sure that’s what it was.
Thank you.
