- Better known as 'Lofty' Sugden from the British TV comedy series 'It 'Ain't Half Hot Mum', Don Estelle had a major hit with the song 'Whispering Grass' back in the mid-1970's alongside co-star Windsor Davies.
This performance of the song 'Nagasaki' was filmed at the Classic Fighters 2003 airshow in Blenheim, New Zealand, a short five months before Don died in August 2003

Lovely man and greatly underrated. Kept on going although sick. When this was recorded he was nearing the end. The lack of respect from the audience is appalling.
Bless his heart .. lovely voice and underrated as a singer. Well, ten years after you died people like me are searching you internationally on you tube !! Well done little northern chap!
Bless you you kind hearted soul❤️👌
Too true, takes my breath away every time I hear him sing
Seen him in Basildon and Lewisham. Saddened me to see him singing in shopping centres. Bought a few of his cassettes. He always wore the same uniform. Great voice he had.
Don Estelle's talent won't be wasted in heaven!
Vale Don Estelle but Nasty please, why is it that people with delusional beliefs of religion are not only stupid...they're proud of it! He's freaking dead mate, dead as we will be one day.
My parents saw him selling autographs at the buttermarket shopping centre in Ipswich a few years before I was born. I remember them saying how they were saddened to see someone who made them laugh so much having to sell autographs to get by. I still listen to his and Windsor Davies version of whispering grass regularly. I think he's fantastic.
I used to live in Rochdale in some flats called the 7 sisters. Don lived on my floor and had bought one of the flats (rest were council). He was a lovely guy, very friendly and sadly missed.
When did Don Estelle live at the Seven Sisters?
I saw Don singing in a shopping centre back in the 90s it was a sad spectacle. Such a great man having to "work" dead venues.
Same here, at eastgate shopping centre in Basildon essex selling cd's. Very sad.
....In Woolworths in Haverfordwest in 1986...
I saw him perform in one of the Ipswich shopping centres... must have been around 1996/7. I thought then how sad it was to see a talented performer reduced to playing in such places. He appeared to be happy enough but it made me think about what had happened to him financially to have to do this.
Anyway Gunner 'Lofty' Sugden thanks for the laughs back in the 70s. Carry on, as you were.....
I remember seeing him in Cardiff selling his recordings.. Sad.
"Is that the only helmet youve got" yes sgt its MOs orders rest in piece Lofty gone but certainly not forgotten
Wish you were still here Don!!
so very talented..thank you
for the share DAvid.....
So sad that this was only a few months before he died. Died of liver failure but at least he made it back k to Rochdale in time. A great talent sadly missed. Sad to note his old friend and fellow actor Windsor Davies also died recently. Perhaps they are having a reunion as we speak. Sing Lofty.
Don had a fantastic voice so so underated . He was up there with the best .
so sad. he was so old here and people dont know the calibre of these actors ..just walking by not paying attention...
He was only 69 here, looked so much older
Amazing voice, even at that age!!
He was a real star, great voice and his talent is wasted on this audience. Gunner Sugden we thought you were great.
A lovely voice...many happy memories...
a ten foot tall.man in talent ... with a lots of talent and a lovely voice no appreciation .good man
He has an awesome voice!
nobody joined in singing ! Rip Don estelle 💔💔💔💔👏👏👏👏😔😔😔😔
BEAUTIFUL..ALWAYS SHINING..STRETCHING HEARTS
its such a dreadful shame that a talent like his was reduced to performances like this in his later years, he should have been able to live comfortably in his later years but of course the BBC saw to it that he didn't
didnt know he died in 2003 ! so sad that the lack of media coverage even in the U.k !
Good old Don always reminds me of my long ago days in Singapore with my mum and dad
He had a great voice a real singing talen!
would have loved to have seen him round more specially on tv :(
God Bless Him I Love His Great Talent.
Seems ilke all the audience wanted to do was EAT!
No appreciation of this wonderful voice & talent.
seen him play in the shoping center i live in heywood my brother lives in rochdale
Glad I found this.Thanks.
God bless him. May he lie sweetly at rest.
Rest in peace lofty
Great lad
God bless ,loved this man so much ,if I knew he was down on his luck at the end of his life I would have cared for him
I'm sorry for looking this up now..Don had a great voice when he was younger but he just couldn't capitalise on it and maybe it was because his appearance was more suited to comedy, but Matt Monro was only 5' 6'' and he was a huge international star. Don Estelle was very unlucky as the last I heard of his old singing partner Winsdor Davies is that he is living in the south of France and his next door neighbour is the whistling singer Roger Whittaker..some guys are lucky and poor old Don was not.
Robert Townsend u have said everything I wanted to say ....just shows how cruel life is......for some!
Im singing with u Don :) ur a legend
The saddest film on You Tube. Coming to New Zealand must have been like going to the knackers yard
Seriously -- I think not. Nothing wrong with coming to New Zealand!
Nagasaki Nightmare!
quality
Painful to watch, a great Tenor voice. RIP.
Painful indeed, his talent was wasted on those morons. RIP Don. You'll be appreciated in heaven.
Agreed.
It's sad to see such a talent wasted !
made most of what he had. no? highly placed agents just work
Sad to see the apparent lack of interest from the audience.
4205lr yea ignorant fkers ---"""---
@IgiveBabiesRabies Maybe he was enjoying himself and wasn't a quitter.
It is a shame that he wasn’t in Hi-de-Hi!, ‘Allo ‘Allo!, Oh Doctor Beeching! or Are You Being Served? after It Ain’t Half Hot Mum.
No appreciation from this audience!
Sure your now appreciated in the Heavenly Choir.
@IgiveBabiesRabies maybe he wanted to do it!

Rest in peace
Takes guts to carry on singing in this dreadful atmosphere.....
he looks just like the guy from it aint half hot dad.
Funny that. He WAS that guy.....!
Historical Aviation Film Unit never you must be joking!
No he isn't.
@@bertrumbumfishfuker2400 Not kidding. It's Don Estelle. Just older. lol People age.
Not too big on singing in those parts bz the look of it.
Dear Lofty. And what a dreadful audience.
This song would be so much better if the women chew tobaccy and the fellers wicky-wacky woo.
Disgraceful thing to watch. He was too old and ill to be doing something like that. Why did his family allow this?
Christ, what a dreadful song.
It was actually written in 1928 and was parodying the slew of exotic songs around at the time.
In the (seldom performed) intro, it’s clear that the singer can “spin a yarn” and is clearly making it up as he goes along.
However, nowadays the image of subservient women and men chewing tobacco (probably a reference to opium), plus the hideously racist faux-oriental “wicky wacky woo!” is absolutely racist and inappropriate!
