ABOUT TODAYS VIDEO: Can Dogs Eat Tuna
Studies have shown that consuming whole fish with its various fats has up to 9 times greater EPA and DHA absorption. Not only that but fish contains selenium, which acts as a binder of mercury, preventing mercury poisoning and oxidative brain damage.
This is where canned tuna makes a difference. It's a whole food with a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and vitamin B-12 among other beneficial nutrients.
Feeding your dog canned tuna twice a week is a much better idea than popping fish oil pills daily because now your dog can absorb the nutrients better.
Get the canned tuna packed in water only. Use the whole can within two days and refrigerate while open as the fats will go rancid if left out. You can simply freeze any spare tuna if not using it, remember to divide the can by how much you'll use each week.
So if you have a 10lb Chihuahua, you only need to add 1/3 of a can to their meal twice each week. Just store the remaining 1/3 in the freezer for next week.
For small dogs feed around 1 can a week, for medium sized dogs feed around two cans per week and for large dogs three cans per week.
An even better option than canned tuna is canned sardines because ocean sardines are smaller fish that have less mercury in them because they're further down the food chain. Tuna is a big predatory fish that eats many smaller fish and so takes on their mercury levels while sardines are small fish that eat plankton and so have much smaller levels of mercury in their system.
So if your dog prefers sardines, follow the same instructions for feeding as the canned tuna.
Remember to take out some of the kibble from the daily meal volume on the days you feed the tuna to compensate for the extra calories from the fish. This is a great way to raise your dogs overall health and dogs generally love tuna and sardines. Puppies up to six months and pregnant or lactating females need double the serving size.

@@JoyinFlorida I've just finished up on a video for senior dog health and discuss oils/sardines as part of that. In it I recommmed 3 cans a week for large dogs. So yes, you can up the amount. Start at a half can a day each dog, see how that goes.

I also use salmon in springwater in the rotatation. Brisling sardines and tuna are great for hiding GLM and other supps to it.

Great video Scott , I give my dog about 3 cans a week and her hair is beautiful and let’s be honest it’s lean quality protein with great fat, hey when I make her a tuna bowl I make my self a tuna bowl as well and combined with weight training I feel great she feels great I think owners should include this as well into their diet. Skip the drive thru and crack two cans one for you and one for your dog

Hello, my name is makenna. I have a few questions and concerns about my dog and after seeing your videos and listening to your advice I was looking to see if you can help me. I have a Pomeranian who is 7 years old and has been on the same food since we got him at 6 weeks old. The dog food is by the brand called “Merrick” and it’s the “real chicken + sweet potato recipe”. Everything was going very good for him and we never changed his diet when he was eating this food for years. Occasionally every now and then we would feed him boiled chicken in the morning with nothing on it, no seasoning, etc. Just recently this past December we started noticing he would spit up what looked like white foam and yellow mucus. For awhile we had no idea what it could be if it was the chicken or his Merrick food that he was eating. We would notice he would cough and hack like something was in his chest. We finally took him to the vet, where they gave him blood work, X-rays and told us it looked as if he had “angry lungs” but he’s okay. They also said it looked like a pneumonia type of deal. They gave us medication and said he should be getting better. Weeks went by and he was still spitting up and hacking like there was something wrong. I started doing my own research on his food and what could be going on. I’ve seen many dogs can become allergic to a type of food after so long of having it. I started thinking is it the chicken because he’s always been on this same Merrick food since he was a puppy. I finally cut out the chicken and was still seeing that he was spitting up. After all this I’m freaking out not knowing what I should do so I tried switching his food a few times. I was trying kibble that wouldn’t have any chicken in it at all. Sometimes he would be okay for a couple of days and then the spitting up/ throwing up would come back. I’ve tried everything at this point bison, steak, Turkey, pumpkin, lamb, pork, rabbit. All of it. It’ll be like an hour after trying a new food and he’ll start spitting up again and then I switch his food right away again. I don’t even give it a chance because I’m so stressed. I’ve gone as far as trying raw meats but for some reason nothing has been working. I’m starting to think he’s allergic to everything because he has a runny nose where it drips from his nose and he itches/ buries his face in the bed. I’m very scared because I love my dog so much. He’s a very anxiety/ stressed dog who barks all the time and is never left alone at the house. I just need some answers and was reaching out to see if you can help me with any advice. Have you ever seen anything like this? Please help me find something my dog can tolerate. I just now switched him to kangaroo food with some digestive probiotic and hoping that he starts getting better.

Sadly still unsure on replacement brand.
Merrkck sold out and the food pellet size/ingredients changed. A lot of quality dog food brands do this, basically selling their loyal customer list to a copycat cheap replica.
Was grainfree, 2nd food was pureBalance lamb & fava beans until read bad news on both. She wouldn't eat the lamb & rice. Decided they are all junk upsells, unless someone can provide a good-for-now brand. Bought cheapo pedigree beef and heavily supplement with real food snackw.. carrot sweet potato oats pumpkin treats mixed with chicken and baked, bits of fruits cores and remove apple seeds. Try rice and slowly add real, bland, foods

If I have raw fish like salmon should I cook it and if so what method or should I give it to my frenchie raw ?? No bones of course
If it's been frozen first for 2 weeks is best. Then you can defrost to just above room temperature and give raw as best nutrition for a dog.

You said in water only but what about in olive oil? I saw your other video about dogs loving olive oil so I’m not sure why the tuna need to be in water
Dogs need 12-15% fat in their daily diet. If that's being provided then adding extras with more fats can make the diet unbalanced. So if you can factor the tuna in olive oil to the daily fat total fine, do that.
hi there i give my dogs chicken of the sea from Baltic sea fresh water.. once a week.. organs is over loaded with nureaites and fresh meat and also fresh water fish oil which is a big plus but not from the oceans which is full of nuker atomic waste beening dumped every day...

Yes Mackerel is great too. A nice oily fish with great oils and nutrients. Better than tuna while sardines are better stil.
Is it dangerous to sprinkle a small amount of albacore tuna on my dog’s food on a daily basis? My dog is 17 lbs and he has been eating about 1 can of tuna spread across 1 week.

Hi Dan, I've been feeding Cici sardines with both her breakfast and dinner for a fortnight now, as a means to healthily fatten her up a bit. She is a small dog, diabetic (you have helpfully responded to me several times about her in another video thread!) and she is very skinny. I have also increased her BARF by 20%, added an egg in the evenings and MCT oil in the mornings, but she still feels so bony. Do you have suggestions on how I can help her healthily put on weight, please? Or a link to a video you have made, regarding this? Thank you so much.
Simply up her total meal volume by 10% for one month. Then the following month, if needed, add another 10% until she levels out in weight and then starts to put on some weight. If she gets to the point of not wanting more, give some meaty snacks in between.

chopped to pot of water, boil and make tea, give several times daily.
Raw honey combined with apple cider vinegar has been shown to work too. Use at 1:1 ratio.
ie 1 TbleSp of each mixed together, give 1tsp twice daily.

This is a tricky one. Theres no real reason put forward for this issue. From my perspective, I'd follow a strict raw food diet with supplements for balance, give zero drugs/vaccines/flea&tick/dewormers etc so I can clean the dog out and start afresh.
To be more clear on this issue, I'd need some good research time on it. If you want specialised help I do have a One to One service.

He needs an appropriate diet and supplements. Try a small meal of egg (soft boiled), canned sardines (in water) and a little cooked and crushed veg mixed in. Add to this the following supplements: Soil based probiotics: amzn.to/3yoURqU

Dehydration is the worst part. Pinch the skin at the back of the neck to tell hydration levels, should spring back when pinched. If it does not you must get liquids into him. Try him on plain coconut water, see if he'll drink. You have done IV which is good and may have to return if he gets more dehydrated again.There is also an online sub-Q method with the sub-Q kit. Warm to body temp in warm water first (there are online demos).

Keep checking the gums, are thay pink color (obviously some dogs have brown/black gums but there's usually some pink, check that). If they turn white, blood sugar is low. Use some honey or molasses on the gums every hour if white. Should improve color and energy.
