Let me just take a guess at how the Travis King release was negotiated.
Kim Jong Un: We have your American soldier. He ran to us willingly. He is our Edward Snowden. What will you give us to get him back?
US: Keep 'em. Consider him a gift from us.
Kim: But he's a soldier. No doubt he possess many military secrets.
    US: No he doesn't.
Kim: He has special military training.
US: I'm sure he can mop a floor better than any soldier in the DPRK.
Kim: No, we have the best, most powerful floor moppers in the world.
US: Put him to the test then, but don't tell us the results, because we don't care.
Kim: But he hasn't committed any crimes under our laws, so we can't put him in prison, but we have to clothe, house, and feed him, like he's important?
US: You did say he's your Edward Snowden.
Kim: He can't even play basketball. He's no Dennis Rodman or Brittany Griner.
US: So you see our point.
Kim: C'mon! At least send a former President other than Trump to come pick him up. Clinton can come back.
    US: Nope!
Kim: OK, in the interest of demonstrating my amazing kindness, we will allow you to come pick him up, no strings attached.
US: Just put him on a bus to China with directions to our embassy.
Kim: Your gratitude for my immense generosity is acknowledged.
    US: Whatever.

This story reminds me of one TV show on MASH, when Fank Burns was a POW, and the North Koreans couldn't stand him and decided to let him go back to the other side. They thought it would be better to let him go to the United States because it would help North Korea to win the war by getting rid of him. "Go back to the other side," they said to Frank Burns. Hollywood could do a spin-off in 2023 about PFC King.
