  • 1981 Martinsville NASCAR 100. Amazing race and awesome coverage by ESPN and their team of announcers. Many of the big names of that time period were present and Richie Evans put on a show of determination and horsepower. What a memory from the past!

So many memories here. I watched George Kent and Ritchie at Shangra La. I can honestly say it was some of the best times of my childhood. That place was like a home to me. I was too young to know Richie other than his legend, but George was my hero.

Watching Ritchie at Shangri La was awesome as a kid and even better when I crewed on my uncles Late Model as a young man. I got to Drink Beers with Ritchie after the races back then. He is and always will be one of my childhood hero's.

Some of the best modified hotshoes of the day. Ritchie could flat out wheel that 61. No slouches at all in the top ten. I loved watching these guys back in the day. Even though alot of the cars came from the same shops they were still individually unique enough that they were really thrilling to watch. R.I.P. Ritchie and Maynard.

Dang I miss those days! I never missed a modified race At Martinsville back then, and started going there when it was all coupes and coaches! Being from NC, the only place to see modifieds on a weekly basis was at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, but even that far south of Rome, NY, it wasn’t at all unusual to see the 61 & 38 of Evans and Cook in town for the few longer distance races because they paid more points! These were great times, but looking back, it was the beginning of the end for the modifieds that I loved so much! The days of a guy building his own piece from the ground up, and each car being unique, were nearly gone! I miss those cars, and I miss the “old” Martinsville! Great video! Thanks for posting!

I was there too. My uncle took me there in 1957 when I was 9. Except for 4 years in the service it was the Friday night place to be. Even took my wife to be on an early date there. Racing really got bad there for a few years but they are now putting on goods shows again. Made every one last year.
