    I understand now how the codex works but am a bit underwhelmed. The Commander section really needs a "First discoveries" sub-menu where we could review all of our first discovered systems and bodies. This is what I really miss, I'd like a list about the "real discoveries" I made throughout the years.

      I agree! Thats what i expected the codex to be. That seems to be the most obvious feature/use of a commander codex. Several commanders have first discovered tags in countless systems but theres no way to know which ones... codex would be the best place to review that info

    It would be nice if we could get the fire groups split into "Combat fire groups" and "Analysis fire groups". That way our fire groups aren't so congested and we'll have more customizable setup for the 2 different modes without having to worry about seeing your weapons in a fire group in analysis mode when it isn't needed until you switch back to combat mode. That way I can use more columns for multi-role especially when mining in something like the type 10 with all it's possible hardpoints and scanners and limpet controllers that you can put on there. You can have it where the way it is now is called standard fire groups and this other way is called advanced fire groups. Also you make it where can toggle it on or off like orbit lines or just through settings like the center dot but when you turn it off you'll probably have to readjust your fire groups. I think that this will help many people with the current fire group clutter. What are your thoughts on this?

    My Codex wishlist:
    1. I wish it had a record of everything I've discovered & everywhere I've visited (not just numbers of planets) to help give us a feeling of accomplisment for exploring.
    2. I wish it showed the location of each reported discovery (all of them) or at the very least the closest one to me, so I can just browse through the codex & visit all the cool stuff in the galaxy. Hell, I may want to tour all of the different guardian sites, not just the first one discovered. Why add all this cool stuff into the game and then hide it from us? :-)

  • @jyrgenruut
    @jyrgenruut 5 лет назад +50

    I highly dislike that "reported by" is always only tied to one place and person... There are two problems with this approach in my eyes:
    1) As you said, there are only so many things you can discover in the game, meaning the entries will get completely filled extremely fast (to be quite fair I'd be surprised if most things weren't claimed already... meaning people who couldn't play on release of 3.3, have missed out, especially if they possibly were in the void to begin with... )
    2) Reported by gives you a location that is not necessarily the closest location to where you are at. I think if you were interested in checking something out, you should also be able to check which one of the reported locations of that certain phenomenon is closest to you.
    But for this to work, the codex would have to be upgraded to work as an actual database of discoveries, instead of just show picture and one known location where something like that appears.
    For example, I looked at the codex and went to check out some anomalies, but without knowing, I accidentally also found a proto-lagrange cloud on the way there... So when I looked at the codex I was highly weirded out that I confirmed it at a location that it was not reported at... and that's the point where I realized the rather bad design of the codex... it gives glory to people who were able to play on day1 of the release and everyone else can just bugger off...
    Also I have not heard anyone ever seeing a "rumoured" entry... so why does that even exist?
    edit: please note that I am not talking about getting a "discovered by" or "mapped by" tag! This means that the argument that we have discovered 0.028% of the galaxy does not apply here (the galaxy in any given region still has only the same star types and planet types, same kinds of volcanic activity and anomalies. There is a limited amount of content in the game, it would be foolish to think that in the game's current state there is much new things to find in any given region.

    • @MrMulticod

      There are billions of stars. They won't be discovered anytime soon.

    • @CybermanKing
      @CybermanKing 5 лет назад +1

      What I don't get is how you can confirm something that has already been discovered. You also can't confirm the same object twice (so if I confirm a white dwarf I can't confirm another one in the same region).

    • @KiLL_Jack
      @KiLL_Jack 5 лет назад +2

      @@MrMulticod yeah there is so many stars but lots of them are same type, if someone finds red dwarf in a region and someone finds another it gets confirmed and that counts as a full discovery in that region so you have to report only 42 red dwarves to get codex entry for every region for red dwarf and this goes for every type of anything, and thats is not lot if you think about that

    • @jyrgenruut
      @jyrgenruut 5 лет назад

      @Elite Gamegerous Well, the problem is, I do have other things to attend to than Elite Dangerous as well! Except that I think Elite Dangerous shines brightly in it's glorious vistas and just the true exploration feeling that you would have when exploring the galaxy... namely that it is empty, very empty... but also gorgeous and untouched. As such, a rather substantial exploration-related content that I am not able to enjoy brushes my fur the wrong way; and it does seem that the community is rather split on this matter in general.
      Also nobody is talking about getting a tag here, but rather getting a codex entry.

    • @jyrgenruut
      @jyrgenruut 5 лет назад

      @Elite Gamegerous Indeed it would clutter the codex.
      So, the compromise I suggest is that what if at any point in time, you can only see one entry for any reported entry for an object in the region you are in... but perhaps make it so that it always shows you the closest one? That way other people who have first discovered some interstellar phenomenon have a higher, but still not a "praising" chance to get noticed as is the case with the the codex now... the possibility to get noticed would be higher than that of a first discovered by/first mapped by tag but not something as outstanding and massive as the current codex.

      According to EDSM, only 0.007718% of the galaxy has been explored. Even if we assume that only one in ten explorers submit their logs to EDSM that still leaves 99.93% to explore. (And honestly, anybody _actually exploring_ is more than likely using EDSM, so the original figure is more than fair.) At the current rate of exploration, it will take another 45,000+ years. _I think_ you still _have time_ to lay claim to your own little patch of it. ┐(シ)┌

    Back before Horizons, in fact during the first year after launch of the game, I took an excursion around the galaxy and discovered a bunch of black holes and neutron stars. This was back when you had to fly around a system and get close to planets and moons to "discover" them. But the codex doesn't think I've ever seen a lot of the things I ran into back then. I'm wondering if they still show my pilot name as the discoverer when someone else visits the system?

    I'm not sure I understand why the codex doesn't show every instance of an object you've discovered. If I've been to 10 neutron stars, I'd like to see all of them in the codex. Sure I can see that on the galaxy map...if I wanted to "browse" the entire galaxy. This would come in very handy with things like Guardian sites, or other places you may want to visit again. The galaxy map is very limited in functions that could support this. First, the galaxy map needs categories for bookmarks, because after you bookmark a dozen or so things you forget why you did. And second, the galaxy map could really use a "list" view.

    Good explanation. What is the point or purpose of having 1x reported variant? It's a strange way of recording and presenting info, when a complete list of (for example) thargoid sites, geysers and similar (with complete location data) would be far more useful. Who cares if Knobby Knob Knob found the first gas giant in Knob Sector?

    Obsidian... I really enjoy your video's and explanations. Only one problem with this tutorial - What are the 3 numbers under the Star types? Is there an easy way from this first screen to see if we are the first to discover it or if we're confirming it?
    Just now I popped into a system. I honked it... came back with 10 planet results. I looked at system map and nothing was there! So I FSS'd the system to find all the stars and Planets. At this point I would think that I'm the first to scan them as I didn't see anyone's name on any of the planets... but after scanning I couldn't see any updates any where.

    • @Ekinoxe
      @Ekinoxe 5 лет назад

      You were the first to find them. Your name will appear on it only after you sell the data at a station. To get your name in the codex you not only have to be the first to scan that star, you also have to be the first to scan that star type in that particular sector of the galaxy.

    Thank you for that comprehensive explanation of the Codex. I only have one question:
    What happens if I am the first person to see, scan or otherwise interact with an Earth-Like Planet, alien species or geological feature that no one else has seen, but is known (or rumoured) to exist in that region? Let’s say, someone else has found a similar object, many, many light years away from mine, but in that same region denoted by the map? Does that give me any special recognition? Or does it still only confer a, “Confirmed,” label to me?
    I ask this because there only seems to be a couple of hundred, “regions,” of the Galaxy to explore, which must mean that all categories of discovery have been made in all regions by now? Especially since so many players now have giant fleet carriers and are able to skip to just about any region of the Galaxy in only a couple of jumps, (presumably?) so there cannot be many (if any?) general categories left in so few regions, can there?
    As an explorer myself (a fairly new player, learning the ropes and loving the sheer beauty of the game) I am getting the distinct sense that there is nothing out there for me to get my name on? This wouldn’t stop me from wanting to explore (it’s not really why I play) but I would have loved to have gotten my name onto at least one Earthlike planet in the Galaxy, which seemed like a possibility, when I set out? Now, having understood the Codex better, I realise that I’m a little too late for such hopes. Or it seems so? Is that right?
    I don’t use third party help to find things while I’m exploring, though I have no criticism of those who do. It’s just the way I play. But, when I set out, I did so with a romantic notion that I might find an Earthlike planet, out of sheer tenacity, smart use of my resources and commitment of time. But, if someone else gets their name on an entire region, surely all bets are off? Have I misunderstood that?

    I don't get the discovery system in-game. When you enter in a new system but it is already discovered before and mapped by someone else (according to the planetary system), sometimes it says in the FSS it is 0% system mapped, and according to the planetary system information it is already mapped, in other instances it says 100% mapped, there is incongruity or I am missing something.

    • @Contradi
      @Contradi 5 лет назад +1

      You discover the stars automatically since they are so emissive. If there are only stars in the system, then congratulations you have mapped it 100%. If there are more bodies than just the stars, then you haven't mapped the system and should get 0% even if someone has mapped it before you and you see the objects in your sensor and the system map. You can also discover objects just by being close enough to them. This varies by the size of the object. Keep in mind that asteroid clusters do not count towards that percentage counter, so you can safely ignore those.

    • @airforce9872
      @airforce9872 5 лет назад +3

      Andrew is correct but not quite answering the question. For the systems which are already 100% mapped when you jump in, those are populated systems which by default are mapped for all players, no need to discover anything. Many systems in the bubble are like this. "Unmapped" systems which, to you, are undiscovered but already have "mapped by/discovered by" tags are systems which are not default and you can still earn credits for discovering. However, someone else has already been there and gotten the first discovery tag. Only systems which are 0% discovered and have no tags on anything are truly undiscovered and you will receive the "discovered by" tag when you sell the data.

    It's week passed since 3.3 update went out. Looking at reports in Codex you may notice that the Bubble region has more then 80 reports (almost all types are reported). So we have around 80 unique planet/star types. Now look at other regions. They have 40-60 reports in general. So MORE than the half of ever possible reports are already done. Just in one week.
    You can calculate that the max number of reports is around 3300. And more than 1500 already here. Please understand me correctly, I do not want to offend anyone. But what I saw, a lot of commanders have multiple reports. I will not wonder if there are 300-400 unique commanders made reports. At the end of the year, all possible reports will be done. And 500 commanders out of dozens of thousants will be in the Codex forever.
    IDK if this is a fair thing. Hope i'm wrong. Once again, there is no offence, just my calculations.

    What is up with all the butt-hurt comments? The codex is pretty cool for the few who are into the lore. Mining had a huge overhaul, exploration had a huge overhaul, ED is fun again especially with the new mining mechanic.
    Now if they can somehow make bounty hunting even more lucrative, I will be happy with ED.

    I am also quite disappointed with the codex. I got first discovery on several interesting bodies, e.g. Herbig AE/BE stars, Earthlike worlds etc and I don't think it's fair that the codex doesn't mention this information, not really for ego reasons, but mainly as a way of keeping track of places I've been, should I want to return to them.

    Any tips for a new player? Been playing No Man's Sky for the last few years but wanted to try a more realistic space game so decided to pick this up, needless to say I have no idea what's going on or what to do.

    • @TheMysteryMushroom
      @TheMysteryMushroom 5 лет назад

      Set a goal for yourself. A realistic one that is. I did starter missions, (youll get a message that says if you want to try out trading, combat, etc, visit these places) until I got enough credits for a hauler, better frameshift drive and cargo racks.
      Then I started doing trader missions. After a while, found out that "Asprin Palace" in the system LHS 3006 was a really good place to start trading. It requires you to land on a planet, and then on an outpost.
      What this means is that I'm now fairly efficient in landing. At first, I overshot. Then I undershot. Then I blacked out and crashed into the ground. I failes to "Orbital flight" (When you approach a planet, there will be a new HUD with angles of approach, speed, distance from ground and a bar. The bar has letters. One is "oc" which means orbital flight. Then the middle of the hud, or a part of it is blue - keeping your ship on the blue zone will keep you in orbital flight, essentially on roughly the same speed and distance from ground).
      Failing that, I failed to locate the outpost. Then the gliding. What is it? When your speed is 2.5km,you'll start gliding. Optimally, you'll want to glide at 100km from your target. I failed this many many times. Either i failed the glide and had to travel 80km at 300m per second, or I overshot, panicked and crashed.
      After maybe 50 times, I understood each part of the landing process, from supercruise to orbital flight to glide all the while maintaining a steady angle, speed, and distance from the ground.
      Back to the point. This station is good for trading, practicing your ships movements, knowing when to exit supercruise, and generally get a feeling. The station offers a huge amount of trading missions, but here's the best part: It's all connected to like 5 different stations, 1 or 2 jumps away. Those stations have their own trading missions. You just established a trade route :) Take the trading missions, google what station sells it and you'll remember them all soon enough.

      yea see elite dangerous isn't really a game and more a hobby for people that love space, in its real form. all games are played for no reason none of them effect yoyr real life in any way and are all a sensors grind. elite dangerous is stunningly beautiful and when you understand the game there is littereally endless things to see and do. like I said it's not really a game like any other, it's a space sim and if you don't like lone super cruise times then dont do them it is yoyr choice what you do in the game after all. it's about building your fleet engeneering everything and exploring the vast galaxy. Well judging by the comments Fdev where completely wrong when they said people didn't want to feel important in a game. Everyone wants to feel important. Its human nature. The codex and exploration sounded great, but after using it for a while it is a real let down, when so many people either can't find "notable things" in the game, or can't get a first discovery in the codex.
