  • THE GLOBE CINEMA WAS A WELL REMEMBERED CINEMA LOCATED AT LAWRENCE HILL IN EAST BRISTOL. IT WAS OWNED BY THE PUGSLEY FAMILY. IT OPENED IN 1914 AS THE GLOBE PICTURE THEATRE. THE FRONTAGE WAS REBUILT AND MODERNISED IN AN ART DECO STYLE IN 1939/1940. FALLING NUMBERS IN THE LATE 1960s AND EARLY 1970s BROUGHT THE CINEMA TO AND END. TOWARDS THE END A WRESTLING EVENT WAS ORGANISED STARRING BILLY TWO RIVERS. AFTER HE FAILED TO APPEAR A NEAR RIOT ENSUED AND WRESTLING WAS NEVER TRIED AGAIN. IT CLOSED IN 1973 AND WAS SUBSEQUENTLY DEMOLISHED.

Well hello young Dave, long time no see! Wonderful seeing the Globe. Many happy hours spent there on a Saturday morning - the cost of which was covered by collecting empty lemonade bottles off the Wessex bomb site. Thanks for another excellent upload. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Such a shame lot of videos end with a demolition. Looked a great place. Too much of art deco Bristol has seen the same fate. Thanks for the upload.

The beautiful Art Deco cinema on Whiteladies Road is still open, as an Everyman cinema. There was a long campaign to save it from developers, one of the campaigners was the late and sadly missed, local councillor Roy Tallis, R.I.P.
