Great-grandma knew Ernest Tubb.. Mom claimed this song was about the letter my great-grandma... recieved In the song it claim the mom didn't know her son died until the end.. Great-grandma had a dream that he died.. and brushed it off as just a dream.. She was so excited to get the letter, after dreaming he had died. She was so heart broken.. when she realized he did die.. it just broke her heart even more..
My mother taught me this song when I was about 10yrs old. she played the guitar and sang it to me. She started me in music herself and I thank her for that. She would have been 87 now, She was murdered in Dec. 1986. I thank you for bring back and old very precious memory for me. This video means a lot to me Thank you again. Paden.
Thanks so much...I must have listened to this song hundreds of times over the years. Brings back memories of my brother Thurman Wilbur Price, Jr killed in action 3 Nov 1942 on the island of Guadlacanal. He was a squad leader, USMC A/1/2
I can see my Dad who just can home for WWII singing this song in our three room house. He knew all of the lyrics. I was 5, maybe 6 years old. He was only maybe 24 or 25. The extent of the war he told me about was that he crossed the Rhine river with bullets flying all over. Many years later around 2009, I found out that people in Austria were trying to track him down. It seems that they considered him a hero. He was with his outfit guarding German prisoners near Steyr Austria and he drove a food truck. He was allowed to give the townsfolk food too. The person who emailed my brother and me about all of these things turns out to be my Austrian Sister. I finally met her in 2014 Oct, around three weeks after my 36-year-old Son was taken away by Esophageal Cancer. They wanted to meet each other really bad. She came with her daughter my niece who is married with children in Italy. My Sister had been looking for Dad since 1986. She came across his obituary in a New Orleans newspaper and she sent a letter to my brother in New Orleans. I'm in Colorado. Dad Died at the end of March in 1998. Many of us I'm sure have real heroes near us that we will never know about. Real heroes are quite and never ever brag about how great they really are.

Brings back of memories of the 40's. I have remembered the words all these years.. God took a lot of men then. I pray for all that are still fighting

This Old Vietnam Veteran Loves Ernest Tubb
This old Vietnam veteran loves Ernest Tubb too 🇺🇲
I haven't heard this in years-- something reminded me of it earlier tonight. Been holding back the tears with every word,,,,
A wonderful contribution today. How strange that it still applies today as much as it did back in 1944.
