    Another tip for all players is don't overextend... When you are playing theory-based openings against a decent opponent, they will find the moves that apply greater pressure and restrict your movement. But If you're playing a weird opening where the opponent doesn't attack as much, then their queen, bishop, or knight can come out of nowhere with a nasty pin or fork or tactic. Just stay solid mostly.

    Excellent video. I’m 1500-1600 in blitz and i still struggle a ton with this. It’s always the case that they will start with a move like B4 and i’d stick to the principles to try and punish it naturally, yet I always find I end up in a closed position, allowing my opponent to regroup and make a draw or even find a winning tactic.
    This video helps a lot. Thanks you.

    Tip 4 is really helpful - I've encountered opponents in blitz and bullet who use very poor openings in order to gain winning time advantage from making you think. Playing solid would win the game in any other scenario, but in these cases it costs too much time because there's calculation involved when they're just snapping out moves.
    The weirdest example I can remember was an opponent who just played a6 and then just shuffled their rook between a8 and a7 whilst I developed! They only developed pawns/pieces further to counter my mate threats. That was 1-min bullet and I lost on time.. which was a hilarious trolling.

    At my low elo the weird openings often have one idea behind them - a trick/trap that if you can avoid puts your opponent in trouble. Is there any way of assessing if there's such a trap brewing so you can defend against it before it's too late?

    • @iamgroot3615
      @iamgroot3615 2 года назад +16

      If your opponent is playing weird moves you have to ask yourself why would they put this piece here? Where is it going to go next? Most of the traps I’ve seen involve checks/king weaknesses so looking for checks is another way of avoiding tricks. Also if you feel vulnerable just play defensively and castle as soon as possible

    Adding to the strange opening thing. I can agree with playing something strange to counter something strange just make sure it's in the realm of normalcy though. I'd suggest looking at a chess database and still keeping your weird move strong. I'd check with stockfish to make sure you aren't giving up a huge advantage by also playing something strange. Remember, the further down someone chooses to make their first move the more the absolute main lines work just fine. Take the huge advantage if given it and it forces the player to find the best moves which is hard for a human.

    5:59 Stockfish is probably giving such a large advantage to White (+6.7) because Stockfish 15 re-defined what a point counted as; it's no longer equivalent to a pawn, but the chance of winning the game. Older versions of Stockfish might have a more even evaluation.

    Six tips to CRUSH Strange Openings:
    1. Look for obvious weaknesses or drawbacks.
    2. Look for subtle weaknesses or drawbacks.
    3. Develop and control the center like normal!
    4. Respond to a strange opening with a strange move yourself!
    5. Categorize the opening as either really bad or just somewhat bad.

    I would disagree a bit on Tip 2.... Sometimes I play even 5. ... b6 and 6. ... g6 which in more than 60% of my games (I am mid-level player!) turns out to be positive! I.e. I win in more than 60% of such games. Not to mention occasions when I I am able to play 7. ... a6 and 8. ... h6.............. I wouldnt like to comment the reasons for that right now though ))) Again on Tip 2 -..... When we have the white move e5, black can take it once, say by d6:e5, but on d4:e5 - black should NOT be silly to take it again, while they could simply play f5!

    Before even viewing the video: when your opponent plays silly stuff, call the bluff and prioritize good development. That's how you win against ridiculous pawn-pushy openings (unless they create an obvious weakness, but you can push a lot of pawns before your position actually crumbles.) Many people think there should be an immediate crushing blow you can deal to silly openings, but there usually isn't, and the answer is to just develop to ideal squares. Their position will fall apart if you just keep developing and stop hoping for immediate tactics (in fact, looking for immediate tactics often falls into the silly opening "trap.")
    (Edit: having watched the video, I'm essentially emphasizing tip 3. Just play like you normally would. Take advantage of the fact they aren't pressuring you!)
