Seriously, this lesson and the one where u talk about converting an advantage are so well done and said, dude! I heard it before, I read it often and my trainer told me already couple of times. But the way you talk about it and explain it with the games makes me remember it so well and it actually helps me change my way of thinking. Just need the discipline to apply it. You are an amazing teacher and speaker- thanks a lot Andras🙂🙏
Really helpful, one of the most helpful videos for intermediate players on RUclips. It’s so annoying when people play ‘garbage’ against me and now I know how to punish it effectively
Hi Andras. I've been quite ill the past week or so. I haven't had to energy to do much chess training (or anything else) other than watch RUclips videos. I forget how I stumbled onto your channel, but I did sometime this past weekend. Since then I've binge-watched all your "Amateur's Mind" videos. I want to thank you for publishing this content. I've been playing chess since 1972, albeit with several long gaps of inactivity. I've recently started playing again after a 4-yr break. In all that time, my rating has never much exceeded 1850 FIDE. Over the years, I've accumulated a lot of knowledge. I know a little opening theory about quite a few openings. I know quite a bit of basic endgame theory. I know pretty much all of the basic positional elements (weak squares, outposts, weak color complexes, open files, etc.) and some advance positional techniques. And I can calculate fairly well (though I'm often too lazy to do so.) I've worked with several coaches since 2009, all of them quite good & well regarded. They all agree that I have more knowledge than a lot of master level players. But somehow, I've never elevated my game to that level. But what I've realized from watching your videos is that, yes, I do "know" a lot about chess. But I *UNDERSTAND* very, very little of what I know. I may know "basic chess principles" by rote, but I rarely consciously apply them and very often violate them without a second thought. I know some opening theory, but I don't understand *why* any particular move is chosen over another in most of the theory that I know. I know a lot of midllegame and endgame ideas anc concepts, but I don't understand how they relate to the openings I play. In short, I know now that I lack a true understanding of chess at some very fundamental levels and that's why my playing strength has stagnated for more than a decade. I'm going to have to work to fix that, even if it means starting from scratch and rebuilding my chess foundation from the ground up. I see that you aren't taking new students at this time. Please let me know if/when you have an opening. In the meantime, please do continue to publish your content so that I may at least learn from it. Thanks, Buddy Thompson Gilbert, Az
This is so enlightening to see how you effortlessly took down the grob! I know for myself I would try to punish this by "force" and usually that involves forcing that which isn't there. You didn't let this "garbage" play effect your mindset and casually dismantled this as such. Thank you for showcasing this I can't wait to put this into practice myself. Cheers
just played a game in the a6 QGD where it went really weirdly yesterday(weird moves by both sides).this video helps me to figure out where exactly my thought process and calculation went wrong in those decisions!
The Janowski (3…a6) is not really a bad opening though. Basically you’re compelled to go for a Carlsbad (exchange variation) since there is the …dxc4 threat. Then it’s debatable how useful …a6 is. It’s not useless but not the most useful.
Hi Coach, LOVE the lessons! Uno problemo: Once I get a massive lead in development I lose the initiative through forced trades or my attack runs out of steam...
Why wouldn't white play pawn on f2 to f3 to attack the bishop on g4 at various points and what's the best response for black if that happened? Such as at 7:53 or 10:15 or 10:53. I sort of struggle with that!
great advice coach, one question that often comes up is at what point do you realize you have played enough development moves and it's time to switch to kill mode ? (for example, in your game when you decided to leave your knight hanging)
Dragonfly Knives wrote "Why wouldn't white play pawn on f2 to f3 to attack the bishop on g4 at various points and what's the best response for black if that happened? Was one of your purposes of playing Bg4 to provoke f3 and weaken his e3 square? If he did play f3 would you move your bishop to f5 or e6? I do hope you will reply.
@ChessCoach Andras I agree completely that a real hunter's mentality is an essential skill in these games (@14:30). What do you think about immediate Nd3 in such a position?
Thank you for taking the audio issue into consideration! Great content like always. Also, I have a chess question. As a FIDE rated player at 1200-1300, would you recommend me to study Colle System as white? (my online ratings are above 1400 up to 1900 depending on platform and time control). Thank you!
i have 2..bxg4 3 c4 dc in my repertoire against this opening, giving up the exchange for light square dominance and better coordination, and the initiative too. i find it difficult for white to play as he doesn't have a safe home for his king here, and this is mainly why i chose this line over the others.
The most i sacced in these morphy positions was a smaller peace for two pawns. Works every time. But, this is such an overkill, saccing two peaces for a sure kill. Should be tried, whats most to loose, 7points who cares. These Guys who play garbage opening usually try to flag you with 50% success rate anyway.
3:33 if you're cooking with oil and something catches fire, do NOT try to put it out with a glass of water xD or at least start filming first, cuz that's gonna be spectacular))) and then you may call the firefighters

Bird is a bit suspect but not anywhere near this same league - certainly it is not garbage. It has been played at the very highest levels and over-all scores are 42/35/24 with it in master games. Stockfish's eval goes from +.2 to +.7 when Nc6-d4 is played. I play the Ruy as white and am always happy to see it though.

?? 1.g4 is not garbage move. Carlsen had defeated GMs with 1.g4 1.a4 1.a3 etc. Why will white play Na3 when Bxa3 is possible totally ruining white's queen side pawn structure. What if white plays Qb3 instead of Na3, how will black play ...Qb6 and attack f2 pawn, e pawn is no longer pinned. white can play e3 for black's Qb6. It can also play QxQ.
