    ELINCHROM QUADRA / ELB 400 HIGH SPEED SYNC
    Using shutter speeds beyond the 1/250 mark is like finding the key to your jail cell in the dirty laundry. Seriously.. it does not get any better then this, and if I had a megaphone I would stand on roof tops and shout it out..
    UPDATE.. visit my site for a full write up, and image post from this video with more details.. travisharris.co...
    Until Elinchrom came out with the new HS heads for the ELB 400, and Quadra packs.. it was a rare occasion that I would reach into my camera bag, and pull out my 85mm 1.2, 50mm 1.2, or just be able to compress my shots at f/2.8. Now, all of that is a reality.. and I have been testing this for months.
    First, let me say and be totally honest, that no system is "perfect" and its all a give and take. I speak about this, and my thoughts in the video, specifically when thinking about another system such as the Profoto B1's.
    Second, let me say that in this video.. I am only using ONE HS head (main light) and that the second light (rim / separation) is in fact my old, trusty NON HS Ranger AS pack with a "A" head (the worst head for anything HS LOL). The reason I had to use this pack, was because my second Quadra pack was / is in for service.. and this was my only option for this shoot. Unbelievably.. I was able to force enough power out of that pack to actually get the results I wanted.. It was a hard day for that Ranger pack, as most all the shots for that were close to 1100ws (full power) to keep up.. but, man.. what a work horse! I can't wait for the new ELB 1200 to soon come!
    Enjoy the video, I give many tips, thoughts, and show you how I roll on my production style shoots here in Miami, FL.

    that last little bit of info on the distinction between the profoto and elinchrom high sync, very few people discuss those details and I feel like it is a very important distinction.

    • @travisharrisphotography

      Totally Jason! Yeah HSS and Hi-Sync are very VERY different.. and I truly think that Elinchrom has the best system in the world right now IF the goal is to shoot past the "X-Sync" of your camera. It's unreal good.

    Love this video! I'd like to shoot senior portraits but my equipment is not the best but works for me. I learned quite a bit about posing but I have a question for you... Why not use speed-lights?

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, and thanks so much for your support to the channel! So, first.. its all about the "right tool, for the right job". Keep that in mind. Speedlights are great! But, not in conditions like this. Simply put.. they just dont have the power needed to get the results I am showing here. Think of a speed light as having somewhere around 100ws of power.. vs.. the Quadra at 400ws... and that Big pack I was using has 1100ws! As I said in the video many times.. I was at the max for lots of the shots.. so.. a speed light would never work.

    Great video! Just bought the elb400 system. Can't wait to play with it.
    Just a question : What camera strap system do you use? I'm looking for a hand strap with belt buckle attachment for a while. Maybe an idea for a review movie. 😊
    Thx for the info. 😉

    Awesome video. You are one of the best speakers I've seen.
    I have the ELB system with HS heads too. I get mixed results.
    Do you shoot in manual mode or av mode? Could you possibly explain what shooting mode you use and the process you take before you press the shutter? Also, what power you typically use?

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад

      Thanks so much! Yes, manual mode on the camera 100% of the time. Before I poser on the pack, I take a few ambient exposures to look at the background. I decide how much of it I want to include in the shot (how bright or dark it will be) and then, once happy with that.. will turn on the pack and do one or two test shots with the subject. The power I guess on at first (like playing a game of darts). I just have gotten to the point where I can guess pretty scary close LOL. Thats about it!

    • @sheadeighan_
      @sheadeighan_ 7 лет назад +1

      You are a star. Thanks for sharing. Would you ever use the heads to do group photos as well like the bridal party? (with bigger modifier) What's the maximum distance you'd keep the lights back to ensure that it hits your subject?

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад +2

      OMG! yes! LOL. This is all that I use on the wedding day, and use it to light all my formal shots.. I generally use an umbrella.. and keep it back maybe.. 30 feet (give or take).. works perfect! To me.. this is the best lighting system for wedding photographers by far! I absolutely love it, and have used it for 6 years constantly.

    • @sheadeighan_
      @sheadeighan_ 7 лет назад +1

      You are awesome. Ok, apologies for another question and if this is a dumb one, how important is the camera metering mode used with the ELB? Do you use spot metering or do you change settings depending on the scene. I always use evaluative but I'm seeing a huge difference in spot metering, especially on crazy sunny days. Is the ELB using TTL information from the camera to vary the flash output?

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад

      No problem at all ask away :-) There is no dumb questions. The ELB system (as of now) does not support TTL.. so, this means that your metering mode makes absolutely no difference to the flash exposure. This will only effect how your camera is going to "think" when its in an auto, or semi auto mode... which.. you want to avoid doing, especially when connected to strobes. The idea, is that you want a nice consistent result from frame to frame, and you DONT want the camera making any choices on its own. You very much want to be manually died into the camera, and lighting so that nothing changes from shot to shot. So, practice shooting in manual mode, and adjusting the power of whatever lighting your using manually. THIS will get you on the right track, and will make you far more knowledgable in the end.

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  4 года назад

      Thanks man! Yea, its all just dependent on the ideas for that day. For me, its just experimenting with the spill of the light. Sometimes I can nail it with a dish, sometimes the strip is super nice. But, I can generally get a nice full body with either.

      While is a good option, there is a difference between HSS (godox) and Hi-sync (elinchrom). The godox will loose power considerably when in HSS, while the elinchrom won't.

    • @fatfro1
      @fatfro1 6 лет назад +2

      I got it right on. When I use my Xplor600 in HSS I lose a lot of power, too much power. I find it's only effective when the light is close to your subject. If you want to have the light far away say 20ft or more for like a large family shot Elinchrom is the way to go.

    Not sure what using today but HSS is still not a patch on High Sync, sadly Elinchrom seems to have gone to HSS on their new packs I'm told the high sync tech is an expensive method for production and HSS is much easier and cheaper... its tempting for the godox ad200 or 300 pro but again HSS.. nice work

      HSS (with the new remote) will technically work fine.. its just that you won't get the true benefit of it unless you use the new HS heads with the pack.

    • @paddybarker45
      @paddybarker45 7 лет назад

      Elinchrom's Hi-Sync transmitter can work with all their packs as a transmitter, however to be effective for Hi-Sync, it must be used with a head that has a long flash duration (which the HS heads do). You can get some increase in shutter speed using the Pro (formerly "S") heads, but with some power loss. There is little or no benefit in attempting Hi-Sync when using the "A" or Action heads. All of the above applies to the Ranger, Ranger Quadra, ELB 400 and the New ELB1200 packs. The Hi-Sync also works with the Elinchrom D-Lite 4 (mains powered) heads due to it's long flash duration, but other units in the Mains power range.

      Hi Michael.. LOL.. if you watch the whole video.. I actually stop, and talk about all of what you just said. I fully understand the difference from HSS and what Elinchrom offers (Hi Sync).. and this was my point when I was talking about maybe switching to Profoto B1.. There is nothing misleading.. "High Speed Sync" is just that.. synching at "High Speed".. I know that the technical terms HSS and HS etc..etc.. are all different things LOL.. ;-) Most people searching for a video just type "High Speed Sync" so thats the title.. watch the video, and I explain the difference... Oh, and BTW I did not mention on the video.. my OSD setting was 1.0 on my 1DX FWIW.. This I tested before this shoot at the different power levels / shutter speeds.. and found it to be just about perfect across the range..

    Food for thought and not to downplay HSS... under a walking pace, 1/250th sync, mid day sun, wide open aperture, and for the flash working considerably less, you only need a variable ND filter. Why overpower the sun at full power in HSS when you can get ambient exposure with an ND, then fill flash with full power. HSS is hard on most high powered flash units and over time they eventually fail. For sports or fast moving objects, HSS is necessary to freeze time. A leaf shutter is a great exception... something like the Fuji X11v can be very useful, and for little money will sync at any shutter speed up to 4000th, and it has a built in ND.

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  3 года назад +1

      Totally good points! Thanks! Yeah, I know.. lol. But, I was sponsored by Elinchrom to make some videos (this was years ago now). The other thing.. is getting sharp focus with my old IDX with a stacked ND.. was a nightmare. Now, its no longer an issue (newer camera). But thanks for watching!

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  3 года назад +1

      By the way.. using a ND filter will not effect the amount of power needed from the lighting system. I still need to produce apx. the same power (tho no longer need HSS). as the ND filter blocks (reduced) ALL light into the lens.. this includes the flash. So, the only real advantage here, is that I can hold on to my f1/2 AV setting back at native sync. BUT, the flash needs to be ramped up to power through that reduction in light hitting the camera sensor from the filter. AND I need to now have hindered AF performance because of the darker viewfinder (ND filter).

    • @DLMlive
      @DLMlive 3 года назад +1

      @@travisharrisphotography Thanks for the reply Travis. Both HSS and neutral density filters affect flash and constant light. What you gain with an ND is that you can run the flash at whatever power you want, and you get the recycle speed that you need. You also get to keep the ISO low. With the ISO low, you get to run full power within synchronization speed, and you get the best image quality possible. You get better image quality from a low ISO, and you get better battery life because your flash is not pulsing. As for HHS, you are only getting 3 to 5 percent of our total flash output when we’re in high speed sync. Their are uneven lighting issues with HSS and image noise from higher ISO on top of the other shortcomings. A Quality ND can be expensive, but if you want the best possible image, and want to shoot all day on one charge, an ND is the best choice. Again HSS is convenient and great for sports... Your gracious to have answered, and I do respect what works best for you, and it is nice that you allow other views to be shared on your posts.

      @@DLMlive Thanks for writing all that. I have done this for 11 years fulltime, and could write the book on all this topics. Weather to use a ND is a personal choice. In some cases it works (for you) and in others it does not (for me). I also teach lighting workshops. Again, this video was to show HSS pushed to the limits for Elinchrom. I fully understand how all of this works.. and this is all a thing of the past now. Thanks for the support!

    Hi , nice video travis.I was contemplating picking up the Elinchrom ELB400 but finally decided on the Profoto b1.yet to put it to the test next week. I had a ranger RX speed as for a couple of years but was not so happy lugging the pack along (considering that I didnt have the luxury of an assistant )

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад

      LOL totally! The B1's I am sure are super nice. I too almost made a switch.. but, then once I used the HS heads with the Quadra packs.. it's on another level.. The fact, I can shoot at f1.2 and 1/8000 was insane.. and while the B1 has HSS it's not the same at all.. and for this reason, and my "style" I think the Elinchrom system is a better fit. BUT.. BUT... I do love the build, no cord, and simplicity of the B1.. and if I was not trying to push the limits.. I would be all over it! :-)

  • @thisis5123

    The Broncolor Siros L ( 800 and 400 watt versions) both have a High sync ability like the Elinchromes. I was almost going to get the Broncolors but their transmitter doesn't have the transmission range that I need distance wise. I'm mainly looking for a light setup to use with my 600 f/4 so I need huge working distances. Broncolor claim their working distance is like 160' or something like that which i guarantee is fine for basically anyone that isn't working with a 600mm doing environmental portraits.
    I really want the new ELB 1200 coming out, but I'm unsure considering I may be better off with a 2 ELB 400s for now instead. I'm not sure how a 400 watt strobe would hold up outdoors in bright light.

I as because when I called Elinchrom (MAC Group) no one could definitively answer that question. Also, Great work and thanks for the video/ tutorial, I"m on step closer to ordering an Elinchrom set up. Oh yeah, one final item, do you find it to be a hinderance that there isn't TTL?

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад

      Yes, you can use it with the Quadra.. I actually dont have the ELB400 either. For ETTL.. it's nothing I have ever used in any of my photography. You (I) never want to let the camera, or lighting system make any choices when it comes to exposure value. When you are on a shoot and are shooting a ton of images, its really important that ALL of the images are totally consistent so that when you get to do post work on them the edits are all the same. The last thing you want is to take 200 images (or more) and some are a little brighter then others etc.. you want to manually dial in the power value, and clip out all the images under the same power setting. ETTL is only good for either new people who are learning (and this is not a good way to learn anyway), OR.. if you are trying to shoot fast action moving subjects. Thats about it :-)

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад +5

      Yes. Absolutely could of. however the issue with the ND filters.. becomes focus @ 1.2 and some of the wide open aperture values. (its hard). But, yes, this is another way to achieve the same result for sure!

    Hi, what ods settings are you using?

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад

      I seem to be having the most luck with settings around 0.9 or 1.0. This is with the 1DX. It will differ from one camera to another.. and in fact was even different on my 1DX before the shutter was replaced. Before the shutter was replaced (few months ago).. it was actually at 2.3. Technically, the OSD setting should be changed based on shutter speed, and power output.. but, honestly.. I just dont have time to fool with it when working with clients.. so, I just did some static tests in my house.. found where I got the best results and just roll with that.

      I did not. I just cranked the power way up, and forced it to dump the light along with the other lights in this specific shoot. Not the best setup, but it worked :-)

    Just checked my watch. It is deffo 2017. So why exactly is EL still using a cable to connect the battery to the light? Baffling!

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад +2

      Not sure I understand? Yes, of course there are lighting systems like the Profoto B1.. with no wires.. BUT.. this also has down sides. For one, the problem I had with it is that all the weight is up high, and this is not great when working with stands etc.. (its top heavy)... vs. a pack and head setup, where the center of gravity is much lower, and the pack acts like a small sand bag. In practice, this stuff matters. However, I totally agree that dealing with cords is a hassle.. LOL. Until the profoto system can do what this can do with Hi Sync.. this will be the king!

    • @Azertyvo
      @Azertyvo 4 года назад

      And if you're thinking of sending the power wirelessly from the battery to the light, then this is just impossible technically speaking. That would imply sending a beam of high energy to the head and there's way more to it than just sending some Bluetooth or WiFi waves. The guys at Profoto favor another concept as Travis put it. The battery and the light head are both stuck together and stand up there at the top of the stand. Weight and possibility of falling.... as explained near the end of the video. A lot of people are ok with this. I'm not.

    Great video. Apart from the weight of the head (mitigated by an assistant, or sand bags) the way you talk, it really sounds like Broncolor Siros 800Ls would be the light for you... Not Profoto B1s. They have great power and fabulous battery life. They are also super tough (mine have already hit the ground more often than I want to admit) and they HyperSync wonderfully up to 1/8000 sec. Rent a couple of Siros Ls, I think you'll be impressed!

    Elinchrom's decent price point gets over shadowed by the poor build quality. The plastic parts for stand mounts, friction knobs, handles consistently break with everyday use; drives everyone crazy in the studio. Do not use the carrying handle on the 2400RX packs ... what on earth happened to Elinchrom?

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад

      Hey David! I know what you mean.. a few years ago I had a Ranger "A" head go bad because the plastic friction mount broke.. and I was pretty upset, and at the time I was wishing I had ProFoto as they use all metal mounts etc. But.. while thats all true.. there is a HUGE delta in price between the two brands.. and in terms of "portable" power the Quadra system is in a class all of its own, and I love it! Its a bit of a trade off.. light weight vs. heavy construction.

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад

      Hi Tyson. Nah.. We are doing BTS video.. NOT a "polished" video for hire. There is a difference. I could not care ANY less about the quality (for the most part) with the BTS videos. We are working, and need to move fast, and the 80d is just a notch better then the iPhone. It's about the right tool for the job, and expectation. IF I did video for hire.. sure. Good comment. But, this does not apply in this application. We just don't care. Its a tool to show what we do, and for others to learn from. Not a movie about "video quality" etc.

    • @tysonator5433
      @tysonator5433 7 лет назад +1

      Air point about video quality. Thoigh I am surprised you mentioned that the 80D is just a noych about the iPhone. Considering the optics and sensor size ofbthe 80D should be in different solar system to the iPhone. I own a EOS 7D which I love. The AL filter does hit IQ a bit which is annoying. I was tempted to buy a 80D for general photography work I do and of the video AF function on 80D is just brilliant. The lack of 4k has put me off. That is why I have stayed woth my 7D MkI for years now. As I do sports and wildlife a fair bit it is great DSLR. Just the video is just out dated, however with patience I can get there.
      I enjoyed your photo shoot video and will try to employ some of your techniques.

      LOL.. That "monster nonsense" battery (as of now) is one of the most powerful battery flash packs avail without spending close to $8K. If you actually have the type of business I have, with as much volume in which we shoot.. here in Sunny South, FL where I want to overpower ambient all the time.. then, 1100ws is pretty darn welcome in any pros kit. The point of this video (that you may have missed) is the fact that I normally would have used a second Quadra.. and the HS heads. But, with one broken.. I decided to use the Ranger Pack along with the Quadra etc.. But, by all means if you dont like the videos please un-suscribe as I dont want to waste anymore of your time, and pull you away from projects that I am sure you are working on too ;-)

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад +2

      Hey Dark... with photo gear you will always get what you pay for. The Quadra system is not overpriced, and the Flashpoint can't do anything close to what I can with the "Hi-Sync" technology found with the new HS heads. With that said, there is nothing wrong with anyone using Flashpoint, or anything else they choose. I just happen to use this system, and made a video about it.. At this point, I am not looking to switch to anything else and for anyone looking for a hi speed setup (meaning shutter speeds 1/8000) this can't be beat... and by that I mean that the power output is FAR more efficient with this system then ANY "HSS" system, like whats found on the B1's and the Flashpoint, and... every other HSS strobe out there. THIS is what makes this system gold. The "overdrive" timing that they use to --actually-- sync the shutter to the special slower flash duration makes all the difference. You would need to use this system for yourself before commenting.. its that good!

      You are a very good photographer. I'm surprised how much equipment failure you have had from elinchrom. I've had one bad bulb so far. Other than that it's a great system. I think it is superior to the profoto. The advantage of the profoto is that all their equipment is pretty much waterproof but I think elinchrom is superior in it's technology. I used to be part of the dynalite family and they didn't evolve. I wish they had done what elinchrom has done and made a system that focuses on the newest tech and lightest form factor. Carrying around a large battery now seems so dated. Keep up the great work.
      Btw I used to drag the sin wave inverter from dynalite as well as the nimh batteries. I love how nicely elinchrom has made life better.

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks so much again. I totally agree with you, and love that Elinchrom is def. on the cutting edge of tech. Profoto is really great too, and perhaps physically built a little nicer / robust.. It all comes down to how you want to work in the field, and if you want to take advantage of specific features. The failures I have had, I think are normal based on my volume, and nature of usage.. lots of gun and gun.. hi power settings etc.. and the cords do fail.. even when your super careful to store them / coil them without any resistance (something I learned to do years ago). I just think they need better cords.. and that would have avoided a few of my failures for sure! The only reason I loved the B1 was.. no cord.. and no pack! BUT.. no "Hi Sync" like the HS heads offers.. and its center of gravity weight on a stand is a little concerning when working out in the field.. having to bring a sand bag negates the benefit of no pack LOL.
