Hey Cousin, It is vary rare that I actually comment on any videos. I want to thank you for everything! You have helped me learn so much, with new confidence to try new things. The way you teach is fantastic and you make it fun to learn. Everything you teach can be tried right away. You have made me a much better photographer. I did my first real shoot for a group at the weekend for their corporate profiles and used your techniques. They were all so happy with the images and this made me happy.
@Johnny, I used the 60x90cm softbox umbrella from Phottix. I think it's called Easy-Up softbox or similar. Awesome quality. Very handy. It also comes with a grid which I did not use for this shoot.
iMercury989: Yes, the Nikon flashes do support HSS and yes, you need a radio trigger which supports it as well. I use the Phottix Odin, which is working just fine. But there are also other brands and they might work fine as well. I just did not test them yet. I did try out the Pocket Wizard Mini one and Flex TT5 a couple of years ago when they came out.

It's a feature of the flash and it will work with any camera. Nikon calls it Auto FP HSS, and the Nikon SB-900 supports it. But your radio trigger needs to support it as well.

Thanks for the response. What was tripping me up is that he was shooting above 250th of a second and yet his background wasn't a dark mess (as we know, a higher shutter speed cuts out more ambient light, darkening the background.) After some digging, I uncovered that HSS no longer acts like a flash. It fires a few repeated pulses, thus acting like continuous light, in which case the aperture-shutter-flash relationship changes again, allowing for a high shutter without blackening the background.
I'm trying to figure out what soft-box your using. Found the phottix page. They have 2 but only side image. I want to order the same exact one your using with the umbrella style mounting. It would be easy better that the speed-mount one i got. What size is yours maybe that'll help me. Appreciate your videos!

I noticed while you were using the softbox .you was only capturing three quarter length shoots. Any particular reason why you haven't capture full body shots using the softbox . I'm curious to know .
@_Ani: Glad you found it. And yes, it's particularly for speedlights. It's really awesome with speedlights but it would really not work on studio strobes.
Thank you, VideoFrank! Even on a sunny day I would need a softbox or an umbrella to get this soft light. Furthermore, I would refrain from bouncing the sun into her face as that would be very uncomfortable for her and would make her squint.
I have nikon d7000, sb600 and sb700. How can i triger this flashes in hss mode when i shoot remotly with comander mode? I can sync max at 1/250s... When the flashes is on camera hss work perfect and i can sync at 1/8000s, but i need it remotly... Do i have to buy photix trigers for that or not? Please answer, i need this... For HSS, does the flash have to have HSS capability or do both the flash and triggers need to be capable? Currently have a YN560-II and YN560-IV and don't know if I should invest in a HSS flash or just the trigger?
You can also achieve the same effect-using your normal sync shutter speed and a - ND1.2 - 4/f Stop Neutral Density Filter if you set your flash exposure to F/5.6 you would then set your aperture to F/1.4 when using a - 4/f Stop Neutral Density Filter. This gives you exactly the same exposure but significantly less depth of field.?
I am very curious to what the flash contributed to the photo in comparison to how it would have looked without a flash. (I had a discussion on this subject, whether it would reduce softness of the 'natural light') Do you have a video that addresses this? edit: Never mind! Rechargeable batteries are pretty much standard for anyone who works with speedlights a lot. Sanyo Eneloop are very popular and go for the high capacity ones (2000mAh), they cost a bit initially but they will last for 1000+ reuses.
Thanks for the great video! I'm a newbie at flash photography and have been desperately trying to figure out how to balance my flash with ambient light. I've learned that increasing your shutter speed cuts down your ambient light. How then, with such fast shutter speeds (thanks to HSS), are you able to get such a beautiful balance, i.e. where the background isn't a wash of black shadows? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Rana Keif. get a yn622-tx trigger(C for canon, N for Nikon), you can control all your speedlight with that trigger. you don't have to go back and forth to the flash to adjust. He mentioned he only fire a hint of the flash power so he might be using only the flash at full power when necessary like when the background is too bright.

Yes, I love to use this softbox for infants (on a boom, like here: www.zelbel.com/baby-boom) and it's awesome for newborn as well. Does Phottix not ship them to the US? Then how about this one: goo.gl/7ViTQC ? 12x12 would be much too small for my taste, even for newborn photos.

So the thing is... i can find a HSS capable flash like the YN-568ex, but i'm struggling to find a HSS capable trigger that works on a Sony A7 camera. the RF-622 Trigger from yongnuo is HSS capable but is not compatible for HSS with the Sony ( i read somewhere the sync speed was limited to 1/250s for non Canon / nikon camera's). So do you know any brand of wireless trigger that support HSS for Sony Alpha camera's (the sony A7 in particular) ? Any advice would be much appreciated :) . thanks a lot in advance.

Unfortunately not, Edward Millership. Your flash and your trigger both must support HSS. What happens in HSS is that your flash is acting more like a lamp than like a flash. Usually it would emit one short burst (flash) of light. In HSS it emits a series of smaller flashes which altogether look a bit like constant light. Please check the link on SmokingStrobes. The linked article explains it much better than I can do it ;-)
Agreed, if the exposure from the flash is too much you don't raise the shutter speed as that is used to control ambient light. You should of brought the soft box further away from the subject or decreased the flash power.
A rough description of HSS above 200-250 the first shutter curtain and the second shutter curtain start to go so fast that the slit between them is narrower than your image and the faster your setting the narrower this slit is as it progresses across your sensor. A standard flash setting would only fire one burst and only effect the area of the image that the slit happens to be exposing the rest would be dark. HSS does many bursts as the slit progresses across the sensor.
I have the d5200 which is restricted to 1/200 when using a speed light :-( you can achieve similar results if your camera isn't capable of hight speed sync, I use a continuous quartz light for anything over 1/200 sec, great. Yet another great video,
ND filters are necessary for video, for photography HSS and short shutter speed is much more practical. An ND filter affects the viewfinder unless you have an ELV that will compensate for it.
How High Speed Sync works is actually really simple. In normal mode, the flash triggers for a tiny fraction of a second when both of the curtains are out of the way, and that exposes the picture evenly. When the shutter speed is so high that the two curtains are both constantly partially hiding the sensor, HSS makes the flash emit light for the whole time of the exposure in order to create even lighting.

Juan Dela Cruz You can also buy the much cheaper Youngnou YN603 triggers. They are cheap, reliable and has an enormous reach. And they works fine with the YN568EX II for me.
I used to use my portable flash (Handle mount) just enough to fill in the shadows & give the model some nice catch lights in her eyes :-) But in the old film days 1/125 was the fastest unless I used my Hasellblad then I could use any shutter speed I wanted to due to my medium format having a leaf shutter :-)
Long time no videos. It's great that you are back :o). Got a couple of questions for you. 1. Can one use exposure compensation to reduce the light if you don't have a flash that supports HSS? 2. This is not very clear in the video so I'll ask. Do the flash and radio both have to support HSS? I only one of them supports HSS would this work?
But the overexposure wasn't as much coming from the speedlite but from ambient light. The faster shutter speed decreases ambient light and allows the flash to do more of the work. Moving the light source farther away wouldn't do much in this case besides decrease the softness and make the flash work harder to cover the distance.
so you guys know, to do this trick you need: 1) flash capable of high speed sync. usually a canon flash for canon, nikon flash for nikon camera. 2) remote trigger with TTL capabilities. if you have "dumb" radio triggers, like old school pocket wizards or anything without TTL, this wont work. you can however use nikon CLS if u have compatible camera and flash. requires line of sight though. CLS should work w/ a softbox if flash is outside of it. its not super reliable outdoors though.

I have this video among my favorites since quite a long time. I also use Phottix Miltros + flash. Could you tell me the reference of the stand and softbox you used to accommodate your Phottix speedlight? Thanks for sharing al those great videos.
Probably for a couple of reasons. At F2.8 the lens is sharper than when shooting wide open while still offering beautiful bokeh. And, at F1.8 the flash would have to work that much harder to compensate in high speed synch mode.
How does a umbrella softbox with the flash mounted "backwards" compare to a regular where the flash comes in from the rear? Bought cases with speedlight.
Similar light quality, not perfectly even, but good enough. I prefer the backwards variant because it is much more compact and allows me to position softboxes in tiny corners of rooms if necessary. On the contrary, for these softboxes you really need an additional boom (like the multiboom) if you want to angle them downwards. They have little wiggle room for angles otherwise.
+Henrik Thuresson Really doesn't matter what kind you use as long as you try to make it work with flash and exposure compensaion. Both take practice and each have strengths and weak points - moreover most importantly if you're using a softbox like that outside use a heavy sandbag or camera bag to weigh it down because it will catch any kind of wind and blow over and ruin your flash. You have been warned.

Just use a Mitros+ speedlight. It's a Speedlight and an Odin radio trigger all in one. It's awesome!

sorry i still don't understand how do you do HSS. do you use any extra equipment other than flash and trigger?
+along ilham If your remote trigger and your flashes support TTL on your camera (usually Nikon or Canon) then you have all you need.
What is the model of the light stand? I use manfrotto mini compact but i find them very unreliable when there is even little wind. Thanks!

Agreed, if the exposure from the flash is too much you don't raise the shutter speed as that is used to control ambient light. You should of brought the soft box further away from the subject or decreased the flash power.

A rough description of HSS above 200-250 the first shutter curtain and the second shutter curtain start to go so fast that the slit between them is narrower than your image and the faster your setting the narrower this slit is as it progresses across your sensor. A standard flash setting would only fire one burst and only effect the area of the image that the slit happens to be exposing the rest would be dark. HSS does many bursts as the slit progresses across the sensor.
I have the d5200 which is restricted to 1/200 when using a speed light :-( you can achieve similar results if your camera isn't capable of hight speed sync, I use a continuous quartz light for anything over 1/200 sec, great. Yet another great video,

I was just about to ask if I could use an ND fader. If it only affects the viewfinder, then I'm buying that $60 flash.
ND filters are necessary for video, for photography HSS and short shutter speed is much more practical. An ND filter affects the viewfinder unless you have an ELV that will compensate for it.
How High Speed Sync works is actually really simple.
In normal mode, the flash triggers for a tiny fraction of a second when both of the curtains are out of the way, and that exposes the picture evenly.
When the shutter speed is so high that the two curtains are both constantly partially hiding the sensor, HSS makes the flash emit light for the whole time of the exposure in order to create even lighting.

Gang Liu you need to get yourself a flash and a trigger than can support HSS. For example the yongnuo 568EX II and the YN622-TX trigger.
Juan Dela Cruz You can also buy the much cheaper Youngnou YN603 triggers. They are cheap, reliable and has an enormous reach. And they works fine with the YN568EX II for me.
I used to use my portable flash (Handle mount) just enough to fill in the shadows & give the model some nice catch lights in her eyes :-) But in the old film days 1/125 was the fastest unless I used my Hasellblad then I could use any shutter speed I wanted to due to my medium format having a leaf shutter :-)
Without HSS even nowadays it does not get so much faster. My Fuji goes up to 1/180 and my Canon to 1/200,
even if you're using D5200, the high speed sync can still be done. this depends on your flash and your radio control, not the camera itself.
Long time no videos. It's great that you are back :o). Got a couple of questions for you.
1. Can one use exposure compensation to reduce the light if you don't have a flash that supports HSS?
2. This is not very clear in the video so I'll ask. Do the flash and radio both have to support HSS? I only one of them supports HSS would this work?
But the overexposure wasn't as much coming from the speedlite but from ambient light. The faster shutter speed decreases ambient light and allows the flash to do more of the work. Moving the light source farther away wouldn't do much in this case besides decrease the softness and make the flash work harder to cover the distance.
What power do you set your flash?
so you guys know, to do this trick you need:
1) flash capable of high speed sync. usually a canon flash for canon, nikon flash for nikon camera.
2) remote trigger with TTL capabilities.
if you have "dumb" radio triggers, like old school pocket wizards or anything without TTL, this wont work.
you can however use nikon CLS if u have compatible camera and flash. requires line of sight though. CLS should work w/ a softbox if flash is outside of it. its not super reliable outdoors though.
I'd like to see a video using this softbox in studio compared to umbrellas. Also would like to see your shots before editing compared to after. Thanks :)

I have this video among my favorites since quite a long time. I also use Phottix Miltros + flash. Could you tell me the reference of the stand and softbox you used to accommodate your Phottix speedlight?

Probably for a couple of reasons. At F2.8 the lens is sharper than when shooting wide open while still offering beautiful bokeh. And, at F1.8 the flash would have to work that much harder to compensate in high speed synch mode.

How does a umbrella softbox with the flash mounted "backwards" compare to a regular where the flash comes in from the rear?
Bought cases with speedlight.
Similar light quality, not perfectly even, but good enough. I prefer the backwards variant because it is much more compact and allows me to position softboxes in tiny corners of rooms if necessary. On the contrary, for these softboxes you really need an additional boom (like the multiboom) if you want to angle them downwards. They have little wiggle room for angles otherwise.
+Henrik Thuresson Really doesn't matter what kind you use as long as you try to make it work with flash and exposure compensaion. Both take practice and each have strengths and weak points - moreover most importantly if you're using a softbox like that outside use a heavy sandbag or camera bag to weigh it down because it will catch any kind of wind and blow over and ruin your flash. You have been warned.
Nowadays you would be talking about the ad200's. Looking back it amazing you can get so much light from a speedlight inside a softbox.
