    I met ronela in 2022 during pride week in Madrid randomly on a restaurant. We spoke for a whole hour she told me that not only Eurovision wasn't helpful but the Albanian tv just threw her under the bus. Budget was limited and nobody helped and the costumes were random costumes she already had from other performances... This probably happens more than we think but 2022 was just a whole mess

      Ronela is just a mediocre performer, and that shitty exhibition just showed it all. She's just incapable of assuming her own responsibilities claiming that her song was bad and she couldn't sing, just like La Zarra the year after with Evideflop

      This is very interesting because the whole time it looked like she didn't enjoy the eurovision experience at all. She was tense at interviews and nervous when talking about the staging. I was in awe when I saw her open the SF, but for some reason there is always a favorite that is a surprise NQ. It only goes to show even more that the active fans are not representative of the public opinion.

    5:10 Her staging was also ruined by all the flags waving and the very visible crowd. It ruined the effect of a mysterious ballad and the sense that the viewer is watching a music video. To prove this is true, both times loreen participated she used this idea, and guess what? she went to the final both times and even won both times

    • @NerdyLlama21

      Both Moldova and San Marino are candidates for the list from this year. San Marino had some confusing staging choices (even in the NFs I was not a fan of the choreography and they seemed to mostly keep it the same) but I LOVED the background graphics SOOOO MUUUCH and the song is an absolute banger. So much so that the studio version is my fave song of the year.
      Moldova, whole working with a pretty weak song, also was missing its entire gimmick of there being 5 Natalia Barbu's instead of just 1. The performance felt incredibly static because of it, and really threw me off.

  • @DarkFuture19
    @DarkFuture19 9 месяцев назад +29

    I'd add "Telemoveis" - they were originally quite high(around 10.-15.) in betting offices, but killed whole staging with those green "clumsy lizard" costumes. Compare their ESC semis performance with NF one in fluffy white costumes and you'll see the damage done.

    • @Jme_hde
      @Jme_hde 3 месяца назад +3

      The issue was less so the outfitting and more so the staging, it felt quite empty with just him and his dancer. More dancers would’ve made this more interesting, perhaps if they were in the lizard green outfits and the singer was still in the fluffy white outfit to contrast.

    • @wilyriley_
      @wilyriley_ 10 часов назад

      Telemoveis never would've qualified because ultimately, the limiting factor is the song itself - I personally love it, as do a lot of Eurofans, but even if it were executed perfectly, juries still would've tanked it hard enough to NQ (especially 2019 juries, given what they did to other experimental songs like Norway and Iceland)

      @@danikim235 To be fair on “Don't Break Me” we have no idea of how exactly they would have staged it in Rotterdam, it could have easily elevated the song the same way the staging did the year prior where literally everyone was writing Australia off as not only a non-qualifier, but also the next Barbara Dex award recipient.

Ireland 2015, Malta 2015, Switzerland 2013, Israel 2013, Iceland 2016, and Latvia 2018 are some examples of great songs and didnt have anything actually wrong with the staging or the vocals, but would might have qualified if their stagings were more impactful or had minor changes.

    Eye-Cue from N. Macedonia (2018): Even though they gave it away for Jana Burceska in 2017 over a bad stage setup, Jana's song was _waaaaaay_ better...
    Jana's, on the other hand, should have resembled that of a _mini-rave;_ flashing lights and lasers, with one guy with a keyboard in the back on one side, amother with another machine (drum machine?) on the other side, and 2 background vocalists way in the back behind her, and she commanded the rest of the stage alone. Going all-in for a minimal performance, maybe only the singer onstage with nobody and nothing else, is a high risk in ESC, and can only work for really emotional songs and outstanding vocal performances (France 2024 is a good example). On the other hand, I feel some other entries miss the sense of "less is more" and add so much visuals that it takes away from the actual song and performance (here in Italy we would jokingly call our 2015 screen visuals "the 1375 euros banknote).
    Some things that scream" bad staging" to me are: backing vocalists and/or dancers doing their thing too far away from the main performer; musicians, on the opposite, standing too crammed onto each other; too extreme and flashy use of lights; the singer dancing and/or moving around so much that it impacts their vocal performance (I'm still wondering how could Sakis Rouvas' voice not give the least crack as he energetically jumped down a meter-and-something tall pedestal though); outfits that scream "unique at all costs".

    OK. In my opinion Austria 2022, Iceland 2015, Albania 2022 and Romania 2021 had all the same problem. The vocals were awful!!! Their staging were good, but they didn't qualify because of their vocals. Especially Austria and Albania.
    I agree with you for Georgia 2017. I still think she should have qualified.
    Finally, you forgot one of the best examples of bad staging. Greece 2018. Great song, great vocals, 5th in the odds to win the whole contest and due to this idiotic staging they flopped so hard, it still hurts after all these years. 😢

    How about i make a list of songs that "had non - eurovision friendly/mediocre songs but the staging is what saved them from NQ"
    🇦🇺 kate miller heidke - zero gravity (2019)
    I personally love the song but it IS opera (which is propably the worst kind of song to take to eurovision right before ballads) so i could see it NQ until i saw those rehearsals😅 safe to say she went from a possible 11th place to WINNING HER SEMI.
    🇪🇪 elina nechayeva - la forza (2018)
    I think im seeing a pattern here... but again this might not have qualified if it wasnt for her dress😅
    🇷🇸 luke black - samo mi se spava (2023)
    The song is sort of like mayo (you either love it or hate it) and latvia was in the same semi as serbia so serbia might not have qualified but serbia had a secret weapon: a giant R O B O T for staging.
    🇱🇹 monika linkyté - stay (2023)
    Now even if she didnt have such beatiful staging i still believe she would have qualified but i can see her not qualifying since iceland and georgia didnt
    🇦🇲 rosa linn - snap (2022)
    Now this is another controversial pick but i do think that she was saved by her paper room staging (although her song is the 2nd most streamed song thats participated at eurovision) the performance was alright but the staging was much better

    • @manolosocal
      @manolosocal 2 месяца назад

      @@sisarka468 I agree, unfortunately I personally would only include Serbia, which last year imho was only rescued by the staging (& Serbian diaspora). For me examples would be 🇵🇱 Bejba last year, which was saved by the dance break & pre-recorded vocals (to be fair she did improve her vocals significantly compared to the national final) and my prime example would be Moldova (I don’t remember the year) where they used that “closet” on stage which seemed unlikely to work but worked somehow 😂

    • @sisarka468
      @sisarka468 2 месяца назад

      @@manolosocal Bejba's song was okay, not great, but not terrible. Also I feel she was greatly helped by diaspora. Yeah, Moldova in 2018 had a bad song, the only reason they came top 10 was because of the staging

    • @wilyriley_
      @wilyriley_ 10 часов назад

      I disagree with basically all of these to be honest
      - Australia 2019 probably would've qualified anyway because juries love those types of vocals, and it would've gotten televote support
      - Estonia 2018 still would've qualified unless Estonia completely botched the staging (it's also my personal winner, so I'm biased)
      - I wouldn't say the Eurovision staging saved Serbia 2023, considering it was literally just the NF staging (which did help a lot, to be fair)
      - Lithuania 2023 would've qualified regardless, I don't think the staging did much considering I don't even remember what it was (enough televoters would've remembered čiūto tūto to carry it across, I'm sure)
      - Armenia 2022 would've been propped up by the juries anyway, and it would've gotten a decent amount of televote support anyway, given that it leans towards the better end of generic
