    My Golden and I were together for 15 years. He was pure love and devotion. His picture is on my dresser so that I can see it each morning and evening. It will remain there for the rest of my life.

    We've had 2 sets of each dog. First set has passed over the bridge. We still have the second set, though our Lab is now over 13 years old. Both breeds are wonderful dogs. Great companions and protectors. Both loved to play and chase each other, but now our Lab has slowed down a lot. We will loved them as long as they are here with us. They do shed, but a small price to pay for their love of us.

    Both are awesome dogs! We have an English Labrador, and love him sooo much. His best friend at the park is a Golden Retriever. Both breeds are sweet, loyal, outgoing, social, loving, laid back, family friendly, smart, and wonderful. They always want to be a part of whatever you're doing, even if that just means napping at your feet while you work/read/watch tv. Truly mans best friend!

    I had two Goldens. The first, Homer, despite my objections. They were both the most friendly, gentle, intelligent, affectionate, playful, attentive, obedient and beautiful dogs I've known. Can't say enough. I was very proud to have them a part of the family. Now when I encounter a Golden I always ask the owner if I can give their dog a hug. Their look, expression, and disposition always brings a smile to my face.

    I’ve had both. My black lab (Bandit) was obsessed with fetching, 24/7/365. To the point it was almost a mental disorder, no amount of fetching was enough… There was no relaxing around him, unless you liked slobbery sticks, toys, rocks, etc dropped in your lap non-stop in his presence. But my golden (Lucy) is a sweetheart and very smart. I don’t think I’ll ever try another breed.

      Can't believe you said that. My kids are adults now but it brought back memories. When the kids got home from school they would go to the neighbor's side door and get their chocolate lab. He loved being released before his owners got home from work. Their play sessions often ended with the two kids using him as a pillow while they watched TV. Your kids will never forget that.

    I lost my Lab in 2006. I still miss her. With a Lab you have a choice of colors, which shouldn't be a deal breaker if you REALLY want one. They both SHED! The Golden hair seems to roll into little tumble weeds while the lab hair gets into every nook and cranny of your house. With either dog you are likely to end up with hair in your food at some point. As with any dog you need to work with it to have it reach it's potential. SOCIALIZE with all types of dogs and people (kids). Train. Training is a state of mind. Positive reinforcement is essential. It is a real treat to have a dog well behaved enough to take places. Always supervise any dog with kids. All dogs are pack animals and you are taking a puppy from it's pack and adding it to yours. Don't expect a kid to be totally responsible for the dog. As they say, the best age for a kid to be responsible for a dog is 40. There are tons of Lab mixes at shelters and there are also Lab rescue groups. Neither breed will be mature until about 2 to 3 years of age. Lots of great books and training vids out there. Just remember, POSITIVE training techniques. My sister has Goldens. I think she has had more health problems with hers than I had with my lab. (Healthy until age 12 when I lost her.) Pick a good breeder. You check them out. See if they own both parents or at least one. If they have a filthy house and sell many different breeds of dogs, run! They should have questions for you too. Happily, after being with no pet for a year and a half, I am getting a Labrador pup after the holidays. I can hardly wait for the journey to begin! P.S. There is no such critter as a 'Golden Lab'. Yellow Lab/Golden Retriever

  • @ginanewman9418

    I love both breeds. I myself had a black lab who we just lost in November at the age of 14. He was the most loving, loyal, and gentle boy. He and my 3 year old were best friends. I had roommates who had a Golden and she was equally as sweet and loyal. No matter which you choose you can't go wrong. We now have a one year old yellow lab, and may add another lab or golden in the future.

    My dog is half & half; her mum was a golden retriever and her dad was a lab. She's amazing and a tough old bird, she was very ill at aged 9 and had to have a serious operation that the vet was sceptical she would survive. I'm pleased to say that she's now 13, she's showing signs of her age especially in her back legs but she's still awesome, lovable and funny 😍 oh and a massive piggie 😂🤣

    I have owned both and both were wonderful dogs. But then I have also owned a collie, a Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever (yes, there is such a breed), and a wirehaired terrier. Having been a duck hunter all my life, I have owned and hunted both. Both are remarkable dogs, true. But my favorite was, and always will be, a Lab. I ran my all-time favorite Lab, named Coal (a male), in field trials in Virginia. He was the best dog I ever owned. And a great companion. Goldens are great too, but in my experience, Labs have retained more of the working dog characteristics in their bloodlines than the Golden while remaining GREAT companion dogs. The Golden has become so popular with Yuppies and Millennials as a "family" dog that they have been bred indiscriminately by puppy mills just churning out "product dogs" for the "dog as an ornament" crowd. Just like the Irish Retriever breed was ruined, the Golden breed is on the same path. Oh, and one other thing that every hunter that has sat in a duck blind with Labs, Goldens or Chesapeakes knows... a wet Lab doesn't smell as strong. :)

      Both breeds are very smart, but its true Labs tend to require more training. Our obedience school dog trainer said, "you can train a golden with a feather, but you need a 2x4 to train a Lab." Once trained though, you'll see Labs as the top dog breed for bomb sniffing, airport security, and guide and service dogs. They're both awesome dogs.

    We have two older Labs. One male gold and a female chocolate. I have loved Labs since I was a little girl. Our family have always had Labs as pets. The only drawback I would say is that they don’t live a long life. We had a female live to 15 but mostly it’s between 12-15 years. I would recommend them for a family.

      I had a rescue lab who got it and fortunately I came home and found him before it took him. ICU at the emergency vet, blood transfusions, ultrasounds, CT's. Surgery isn't practical, so chemo and Yunnan Baiyao. He lived over two years more, when they told me he probably wouldn't last the weekend . Most expensive free dog I ever had, but such a gentle soul.

    • @suzannemilligan8648
      @suzannemilligan8648 6 лет назад +3

      He got 4 mg of chlorambucil daily and 6 capsules of the Yunnan Baiyao- that's what stopped the bleeding. Had to order it from China. Foodwise he got the same food I always fed- Taste of the Wild- bison and venison. My boy was the sweetest lab I'd ever had as well. (though they are all sweet) He was special and I wouldn't' have done things any different.

    • @suzannemilligan8648
      @suzannemilligan8648 6 лет назад +1

      Yes , he did. I came home from work and he was down in the yard. Extremities ice cold, rapid heart rate and unable to stand- in other words, he was in hypovolemic shock. Got him in the car, raced to the emergency vet. Fluids, cardiac monitoring, blood transfusions....then the meds. The chemo kept the tumor from growing further. It was wrapped around the back side of his right kidney, so there was always the possibility of kidney failure and there was a possibility that it had gotten into his liver- they could never tell. But it was the Yunnan Baiyao that stopped the internal bleeding and kept it from restarting. I had never heard of it before but the vet recommended it highly and I believe that the two meds in tandem was what gave him the two extra years. One top of that, he was a happy playful dog throughout. No one would have ever guessed he had cancer.

      The cancer issue is actually more related to spaying and neutering, especially early (less the 1 year). UC Davis has the study on this and easily found with a Google search. significant increase in 3 cancers (hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, Mass Cell tumors) and 2 joint disorders (hip dysplasia, and cranial cruciate ligament also known in humans ask the ACL) the CCL is more due to early spay/neutering as the long bone in the leg grows longer print more pressure on the ligaments.

    The first dog I ever had was a golden, and he was a fat tub of love. My dad says there's a possibility he was from a line that was mix with a Saint Bernard due to just how big our dog was, and I can see it.
    He was an excellent hunter too, and by that I mean he killed everything from groundhogs to deer. He could never catch rabbits though, but he tried his hardest. We never wanted him to kill things, but he did it so he can bring back what he caught for us. He was a good boy :)

    Labs are slightly easier to groom, with the short coats, and they seem slightly less......neurotic than Goldens, though that is based on a far-to-small sample size.
    I'll go with Labs, but really, you can't go wrong with either!

    My lab was my favorite dog ever. I have had shepherds, rohtweilers, some mixed breeds, but Thor was the best. Sadly he passed last year, but he had a fan club that circled the globe, he was the official greeter for a hotel in Costa Rica. I love both Golden’s and labs , but Thor convinced me that only a lab could go unchallenged as far as my best pet ever .. thanks for the video !

    I own a Golden and a dog daycare business, and I'd say that the first thing I always notice about the Labs we watch over is how stocky they are; meanwhile, Goldens are usually bred to look graceful and pretty, the Fabios of the dog breed world. My husband also claims that all Labs have a very pronounced dip-knot on the back of their skull (between the ears) comparatively with Goldens. His proof is that he's patted a LOT of Labradors and Goldens ... but I don't know how scientific that is!
    Thanks for the video! Great information laid out plainly, and the narrator's voice is so warm and friendly.

    Love both breeds. We are Golden people but both have overwhelmingly wonderful traits including intelligence, kindness and loyalty. A Lab was actually the original sire of the first Golden litter in Scotland. You can see so many similarities in the breeds. Goldens are unswerving sweet dogs but Labs also tend to be friendly and loyal. You can't miss on either a Lab or Goldy if they're properly bred.

    Another good way to differentiate Labs from Goldens(even though they can look alike as puppies) is Golden’s will develop more hair on the top of the head which can look kind of puffy as young puppies. Also, there are two types of Labs, English and American. English Labs descended from the Newfoundland and were used to retrieve fishing nets. The English Lab became extremely popular in Europe. The American Lab was created in the U.S. where several English Labs were brought in and crossed with Pointer and a few other things to create the perfect gun dog. American Labs tend to be taller, leaner, and more energetic than the English Lab. Most of the time(unless you have a short haired English Lab) American Labs also have shorter hair. Either way, Labs are great dogs.

    No mention of separation anxiety? I think it is super important to let people know both breeds are known for it. My labs have all been absolutely amazing dogs, bombproof with children, but they need to BE WITH PEOPLE. If you plan to be away 8 hours or longer Monday to Friday get them into dog daycare or have two and deal with their mischief, don't crate them all day! All the goldens I know are the same and need a companion to be left for long periods - they are happy with a cat :-)

    Always been a “Golden Girl” but I sure love the Labs! Put the two together and breed them, it’s a newer breed called the “Goldador” their life span increases, from 10-12 yrs to 12-15 yrs. it supposably gets rid of the Cancer gene in the Golden’s.
    And I also thought that the Golden Retriever was made from breeding a Labrador Retriever with a Cocker Spaniel!! Makes total sense to me. They’re both great dogs, and with the Golden, you’re getting some Labrador in the genes too!!
    ♥️💜❤️DOGS RULE 💜❤️💜

    • @eric00214
      @eric00214 6 лет назад +1

      lol there is no "cancer Gene" and most mixed breed designer breeds (goldendoodles, cockapoo, puggle) bring both dogs health issues into one dog.

    • @gldquest
      @gldquest 6 лет назад +3

      Mandie, there isn't a cancer gene in goldens (hopefully one will be found!), there is no such thing as a "Goldador" so it isn't a breed of dog and it will not increase the golden's lifespan. This dogs is a mix breed that someone probably figured out how to rob owners of their money. Goldens were not made from a breeding of a Lab and Cocker! Google The Origins of the Golden Retriever Revisited
      By Jeffrey Pepper. The author is a golden breeder/judge and has a great interest in the breed. It isn't a long read and is located on the Golden Retriever Club of America's website and this has a whole bunch of stuff you might be interested in.

      I love goldens. Let's don't knock the mixes, though. They often do have the best traits of their ancestors.My current two ( terrier sized toy breed mixes) each came from disastrous situations and are still gifted, devoted little dogs. And very sturdy.

  • @pnutbutrncrackers
    @pnutbutrncrackers 3 года назад +2

    People ask which is "better", and that is their first misstep. Different owners prefer and enjoy different nuances, which is totally fine. I would call Goldens slightly more 'sensitive', if that's what a person most wants, whereas Labs, though wonderful companions too, have a little bit more of a rough & ready independence mixed into their temperament (which I personally love). GR's, in general, are probably even more intelligent (slightly) than the very bright LR breed, but again, both come through with flying colors. To me Goldens are even gentler, and Labs a bit hardier. But now we're splitting dog hairs. Which nuances do you like best? That, I think, is the question.

  • @balletshoes

    Both breeds look huggable and kissable. However I have my soft spot for Labradors which I can't really explain and give scientific reasons for it occurring.

    • @scottl5000
      @scottl5000 4 года назад

      me too. But I know the reason. When I was 8 I was abducted for 9 days, taken 200 miles from the city I lived in. I escaped, and ran out onto the street and down the road taking random turns. A black lab came up to me and dropped a ball at my feet. I didn't know what to do. So he picked up the ball and walked away a few feet, then turned to look at me, gruffed with the ball in his mouth. Kept doing it until I followed him. Lead me to his home a few 100 feet away, his onwer called the police. The dog rescued me. I've had labs ever since. I have had golden too, they are so wonderful, but I would always have a bit of a hole in soul without a lab.
