Golden Retriever vs. Labrador Retriever: Which Is Better?

- Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are two of the most popular dog breeds.
Labs have been #1 on the AKC’s most popular breeds list for 30 years in a row, and Golden Retrievers aren’t too far behind at #4.
But even though they’re two of America’s most popular breeds and they look similar, there are more differences between these dogs than you might think.
This video will show you differences in Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever:
Personalities
Barking
How good they are with children
Energy levels
Training
Shedding
And much more
One of the most common reasons people abandon dogs is because the dog isn’t a good match for their lifestyle, so knowing these differences BEFORE you bring home your pup will potentially save both you and your dog lots of heartbreak.
Have you had either of these dog breeds? Let me know down in the comments!

I've had 2 Goldens and one black lab. They are both great dogs. The biggest problem with either one is that they don't live long enough.
Zzz sad
God ain't that the truth, they definitely deserve more time with us, nothing made me feel better when I was having a bad day, then coming home to my daisy Mae.😢
Lab or golden don't live long enough???
@@Billaras124 No dogs do, they're way more dependable than people, and won't betray you, they should get to live as long as turtles and parrots, and us, that's all we are saying
@@irishsid13s but she or he says one of them live a lot and one of them a little bit and i ask lab or golden.
RIP Crosby. Shy of 14 years old you were my best friend, hunting partner and companion. The greatest Black Lab I ever knew. You are surely missed by the entire family.
Same here
I had a black lab she was 14 she was the best family dog I ever had I will always miss her, we’ll miss Crosby too sorry for your loss 😔
Jesus Christ ❤
All dogs go to heaven
I had a dog that died at 12 it wasa lab
This is one selection you can't go wrong. There is a good reason both breeds are popular - because they're two of the best breeds going. If you like gentle, lovable, goofy, family friendly pups that will always love you back while providing a ton of laughs, and you like medium to large dogs, I think these are the two best breeds going.
Labradors are essentially the GOATs of the dog world and they are not even the only epic working dog.
@@gravemind6536 Yeah, but I would give that title to Golden Retrievers as well. My neighbour has one, and whenever they take it out for a walk (usually the time when I am returning from work), it wags its tail at me and gives me the most adorable look ever! God, do I love that beautiful girl
@TyrantAnime69 Golden Retrievers are so similiar to labradors there is basically no point in bothering to differentiate. Impossible to go wrong with them.
One important thing that canceled out the size of my 55lb golden when dealing with children was that she knew they were small children and treated them accordingly. She would army-crawl up to babies and toddlers in a deliberate attempt to be gentle. The only time she got rambunctious with children was when they were 5-7 and were playing rough with her. She knew her size and acted accordingly.
I have seen this in my labs as well. Incredible dogs. I made the mistake of getting, a, um, ''protection'' type dog once. Mistake? Well yeah. I had to watch her like a hawk around people. My Labs? The only danger is they get too worked up and might jump on someone. If my kids went out back, my labs would literally walk every single step. And would run themselves crazy if the two spilt up.
My protection dog, I could trust around my kids, and I knew no uninvited visitors would be allowed. Ever. But, other neighborhood kids, especially those that are like Dennis the Menace, who might taunt the dog or worse, no way. Thats when my Rottie would adjourn to her crate. Never had any problems, but then we were vigilant. And yes, when my Rottie died, I cried, and cried and cried.
Same with my Golden, He's 70 lbs (European hunting/field bred), and he is so good at matching his energy level and how carefully he moves, to both kids and elderly people! We have 5 godchildren between 1½ and 10 years old, and he acts differently with each of them. Same with my grandmother, who turned 90 this year - he's a lot more careful with her, and tends to stay next to her whenever she's around, and allows her to lean on him, which he never accepts with anyone else, except children. He also absolutely refuses to take toys from children, even if they try to hand them to him :) Meanwhile he's the most rambunctious moron with those of my friends who have dogs, and like to play a little rough with him :D
Our Golden co-raised our two children. What amazing animals. A few weeks after she passed, I was cooking a steak and instinctively cut off a piece and reached down with my hand to give it to her.
I didn't expect to tear up like this while just casually reading RUclips comments,
ooooouf, red meat can cause high cholestral. best to try and stick with a plant based diet
😂😂@@dazzaskillz9278
The best dog is the one that you give your heart to. Lost my golden-doodle last year. Best damned dog ever. His ashes await mine for our last walk together. We'll rest together overlooking the creek we both loved and shared. Ive been asked why I don't get another companion. The truth is i gave my heart to Bear and he can't be replaced nor can I endure the loss of another. Damn dogs
I had one black lab, she lived for 14 years and was so smart, happy and friendly. I miss her...
We had a Black Gold. That is a blend of Black Lab and Golden Retrievers. He was the sweetest dog I had ever known. So very smart and wanting to please his humans. He was black with the fur of a golden. Stunning. I wish this would become an official breed. It’s the perfect dog!
Sounds like a Flat-Coated Retriever, which is a separate breed. Beautiful.
I have two friends who each had a black Golden Retriever. Because of the hair style and the large size, I first thought that these were Newfoundlanders, but those look more like all-black St. Bernards, at least in the shape of their heads and faces.
Sounds like a Goldador but just black, that is a designerdog/breed so kind of an official one
I’ve had both and GSDs Golden Retrievers are really goofy. Easy to train love the family. But so do Labs and GSDs each come with their own personality. All chew but Goldens and Labs chew so be aware. They all need lots of exercise or they get bored. That’s when problems start.
Please post a photo!! Have never seen a black lab and Goldie mix. Must have a beautiful dog!
Our Golden Garrus is 8 years old and we love him to pieces. He’s also grown up with 5 kitties. He totally respects them. 🤗
When my golden died, I just couldn't replace him with another golden. I now have a black lab. All I can say is you can't go wrong with either of the two. Both breeds will pull at your heart strings and both will have you laughing most of the day. More so with the lab.
BTW any dog, any size is better than no dog imo.
Interesting. We lost Brinkley (Golden) two years ago to a stinking skank ( poison). We have a pool and Brinkley could not resist chasing the stinking thing. Broke our hearts as Brinkley was the best I have ever had. He can't be replaced and I would fear comparing the next golden with Brinkley. Thanks!
@@Threeboyszjn Very sorry to hear of your loss. Man, waking up was hard. Not getting him his breakfast, no morning walk, knowing we wouldn't throw the ball. Very hard, so I do know somewhat what your going through.
We now also have a Newfie. I'm training her to be a visitation service dog.
My point is, you will always miss your golden. But your next dog will bring you equal joy, just not the same.
God bless you and yours.
Sorry for your loss. I want to get another golden but I think he might remind me of my previous best bud. Thankfully Goldens come in some slight color variation. I'm also thinking of a golden doodle but think some of them are too hyper. Hope you are bonding well with your lab !
@@Threeboyszjnsorry about the freak accident.. must be hard to lose a pup like that.
@@Mark1Mach2 Hi and thanks for your kind comments.
So you too are going through the hard time of a loss.
I LOVE my english lab. Very smart, good looking and a joy to be with. I also now have a Newfoundland. All I can say is I wish you well in finding a new buddy. Any dog is better than no dog. Wishing you all the very best.
This was, by far, the best video I have seen about difference between Labs and Goldens
Wow, thank you!
I had my Willow for just at 16 years. Sadly the last 3 years she was plagued with hip dysplasia and arthritis. She was the uncommon black flat coated retriever with the facial structure of a beautiful golden and soft flowing coat to match. Tons of energy her entire life and she was never neglected of new tennis balls weekly. ❤
it's nice to meet you and you did do and will have my condolences SERIOUSLY
Flat coated retrievers are not golden retrievers. Totally different dogs.
I love both. I personally had two Labs. Littermates. They passed at 10 and 14. The first one did develop liver cancer. The second had a long loving life, they were both well loved.
For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕
We had two yellow labs. They were litter brothers and lived for 12 and 13.5 years. They were my protectors when I was very ill. They never left my side, and always greeted hubby when he came home, even if he had only gone up the road to get my medication. ❤❤❤❤❤❤. We had them cremated when they crossed the rainbow bridge, in 2017 and 2018, so that we could always have them with us. I still miss them, every single day. I would definitely get another one (or two), but not yet. We’re not ready for the commitment and there are things we still wish to do, that we deferred when our boys were alive. I simply adore labradors. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Had both breeds, but I would take the golden first, what a loving dog and each has their own personality, very playful, and the greeting you get when you come home is incredible
yeah had a female Labrador and when I came home she looked like she might brake her spine with how much she wiggled not her Tail but whole backside/lower half. Aaaand she always peed a thiny little bit on the floor while trying to brake her spine xD But I couldn't be mad at her for that.
Same. Actually boarded many of my friends’ labs, I would never get a lab over golden. My golden is my life.
My black Lab lived to a ripped old age of 15 years. It’s heart breaking seeing the departure of an long-time family friend. But I like to think Buddy is at a better place, for his final year was severely weaken by his hind legs being so weak!!!! Throughout his life time though, Buddy was healthy and rarely required any visit to the veterinarian. I misses Buddy, despite his passing over 5 years. So much so that i don’t even have the heart to have another dog in my life!!!
My black lab Daisy was with me almost 14 years, she was in tune with me more so than any human I've ever known, she could tell when I was down, she could tell when I was happy, and she was just all around a good girl, who will forever be missed. Best doggy ever.
Are you getting another?
@@fit4ya1975 One day...
@@fit4ya1975 I will one day, just haven't quite gotten there yet.
Zoe my comfort dog was a rescue who passed at 16 years and 2 weeks..my first golden also made it to 16. Best dogs for families. RIP
Have owned both breeds. Both are great dogs and this review is very accurate. Both love attention but the Golden demands attention whereas our Lab loved attention but did not demand it. Our Lab had more energy and sometimes could be destructive, i.e. more chewing and digging. But I’d give the Golden an edge just because they’re just so lovable.
Golden are basically dumb cats and labs actually do something.
@@lpawl89Goldens are ranked 4th smartest dog breed in the world, above labradors and above doberman even, so your analogy is kinda dumb.
@@stefanceckoceci you are probably right but the owner makes a huge impact, most people don’t raise their animals right I think we can agree on that.
@@lpawl89 Well of course that's why some breeds have bad reputations, owners don't do their research beforehand and their dogs end up biting someone...
@@stefanceckoceci
Many of the smartest dogs in the world and in history are Golden Retrievers. Look how many famous actors and actresses they have and produced. From everything in between Halloween 4 to Twister. The safe money will always be on the Goldie every single time.
I have seen many dumb, hyperactive, untrainable/uncontrollable and downright mean Labs plenty of times. Also have seen plenty Labs bite and attack other Goldies as the aggressor and instigator as well.
Had an English Golden. LadyBugg was snow white , smart and sweet with a slight underbite.
Now have Nugget. A honey colored American Golden. An athletic snuggle machine.
I am so blessed to have had 2 of the best dogs ever.
I've owned Chocolate Labs since 1998 and just received by first English Golden puppy. I am delighted to admit that I am once again, shamelessly in love with another sweet, wonderful dog! Thanks for the information that you're providing. It is very helpful and greatly appreciated!
I had a mixed Labrador with snow white fur. She was quiet, curious and the gentlest dog I have ever seen.
Mixes are really the best!
I was tickle pink to see that you did a lab vs retriever video!!! My lab was the love of my life! She was sweet as sugar and smart as a whip. She would round everyone up for bed and wake everyone up in the morning. She would get the newspaper every single day! One day my sister in law’s small house dog got out and ran off. I had my dog Tara at her house that day when her little dog got out. Tara could tell from our voices and reactions that there was unrest because of this. Tara kept looking at me with her tongue hanging out and I finally said go get her! Tara ran after the little thing and put her paws on her and forced the little dog Down who stayed and understood not to move! It was nothing short of spectacular “rounding up”! I never trained her to go get another dog and it only took one time to show her how to get the paper before she learned to get it every day ! However, it wasn’t a question. I didn’t ask her if she wanted to get the paper otherwise she would keep looking at me. I had to say go get the paper. She would also babysit babies. She would sit by their crib or sit by their play-pen.
What a great dog!
Years ago, I had a dog that was the result of a Lab male and a Golden female. That dog was one of the best overall dogs I think I ever had. On the other hand, I once had a Golden Retriever that never made the same mistake twice. He was very easy to train. Currently, I have an Aussie/Lab mix (my second one). Love this mix!!! As for the cost of a dog (my mixed breeds are "mutts" and never have cost much initially), I've always been prepared to spend the money on toys, vets, and quality food. Also, remember, all dogs have their own personality....don't expect "Rex" to act the same as "Duke" just because they are the same breed.
I had a cream lab & mr Mylo was the best dog one can ever have, i miss him so much.. he died at 12 years.. labs are amazing.. I miss him so much and sometimes think of gtg another doggo but can't get myself to bring anyone in his place. Love u my baby... hope u r doing well in doggy heaven!
I had a female black lab, and I'd get another in an instant. Intelligent and sweet, & even though she was a big dog she was very cuddly.
Both are lovely dogs. Owned both emotionally they were pretty similar. Now have 2 working line German Shepherds. Boy I sometimes miss my Goldie. Such an easy girl. Cheers guys
I bet your ears miss the Golden too! Hahaha
spot on mate!@@billvill61
Great presentation and very informative... both breeds are amazing and you cannot go wrong with either one as a family pet - they have their small differences and you decide which is a better fit for your individual life style. Biggest points to consider - vet the breeder and most importantly how the breeder socializes the pups before they're released to the new owners.
We have two goldens and bringing home a yellow lab puppy tomorrow! Love both breeds!
Our Golden Garrus is 8 years old and we love him to pieces. He’s also grown up with 5 kitties. He totally respects them.
I’ve had golden, golden mixes, and lab mix dogs. I absolutely love Goldens but with burs and me being as lazy as I am - lab fur is easier upkeep. For an indoor family dog I’d absolutely go golden but for our outdoor life I’d go lab.
Had a friend who had collected half a dozen stray labs. Those dogs were great for him as they didn’t both the cows while killing off all coyotes in the area.
My golden rarely barks.
He's so beautiful and loving and playful. But I love all animals. The golden is so cuddly.❤
What did you do to have it stop barking?
@@sonofsoweto - he was never a big barker. Occasionally he'll bark. Golden's are not the barkiest dog group.
We have 5 golden retrievers. We have had UK golden retrievers for at least 30 years, and love the breed. I luve in the UK.
One dog we had was a tall dog. He died about 18 years ago, but used to stand by me if I lost my balance. He would also go to my sister when she had a fit (petit mal). He wasn't train to do this, he just knew.
Max, who was born in November, is already a tall dog, he has big feet. But all our dogs get spoilt rotten, but not to their detriment.
Kirby is a pure UK working dog retriever who is 2 years old. The rest of our dogs are a mix of working dog and show dog.
Dude I’ve been researching for like two months but you gave me all the information I need❤
I had (and have) several labs and several goldens. My impression is that labradors have a more intense energy and goldens are more mellow. Apart from that, they are very alike: lovely, obedient, playful, affectionate and very inteligent : ❤❤ both rarely bark.
When it comes to dogs, there is no such thing as which is better. All of them are angels.
Being an animal lover i absolutely agree, but being golden retriever dad, I might be biased a bit but goldens are best dogs ever, depending on what you are taking them in for! If you're adding a family member then golden is the best considering Many aspects
@@arthurmorgan8454 I've had 2 goldens and couldn't agree more.
Except pitbulls
I have one of each, both males. They are definitely different dogs. To me the golden is more of a goof and the lab is a busy body. Our lab seems more intelligent(figures stuff out on his own) but the golden listens better(more obedient).
Just keep in mind that there are significant individual differences between individuals. This video describes general trends. You dogs will vary.
Great video. both the golden and lab are a joy to have as companions. my experience with an affectionate black male lab is very consistent with the descriptions in the video. i've had the joy of two Dobermans, and two street rescued brother muts. i think the vast majority of dogs, pure bred or not, are worthy of admiration for one reason or other. they merit our care and love.
I was a puppy raiser for a large non profit guide dog breeder and provider. Hands down the Labs were the dog of choice for guide dogs. Rarely did a Golden ever graduate and become working guide dogs. That said they still breed them knowing that they will have a long list of donors waiting to adopt the dogs that were dropped out of training.. Goldens are a much more needy dog and can be goofy and lovable.
Golden’s in general are also easily distracted, vs labs are so obsessed w food they will ignore ANYTHING. Of course this is a generalization
I’ve had both of these. Both died of cancer.
I’d really consider having another golden, in spite of the hair. But they were both happy-go-lucky, devoted dogs.
The lab needed knee (ACL) surgery. Bam! $5000 (with all the accessories, consultations, and medications) by the time she was through that.
Our cat used to snuggle up with the golden on cold nights, and the dog defended the territory from other, interloping felines.
The AKC had a special project to gather genealogy data on goldens because of the extremely high cancer rate, to try and identify the bloodlines that were carrying it.
LOL I won't pick and say both were safe space of pure joy...RAJA AND HUNTER ❤
Labs can knock over full grown adults too. I have first hand knowledge lol. But I loved my Kip and miss him so much. It’s why I can’t bring myself to get another dog, the heartbreak when they pass is too much in my older age.
I have one of each. They are best friends and love each other very much.
Had a male golden retriever and a female Labrador both are wonderful . It’s like choosing between your children …it’s impossible , because they bring their own unique qualities and personal characteristics . I say have one of each 😂
They both make great search dogs. Easy to train but the labor has a ton of the don’t give up. ❤
I had a golden retriever chocolate lab mix. He was the smartest, well behaved, dignified, athletic and regal dog anyone had ever seen. I know i'll see him again one day
Both are perfect!
I’ve have had multiples of both breeds. They are so similar in their nature the differences you mentioned are hardly noticeable,. They both make great family dogs. Goldens are a bit goofier than Labs. I think individual personalities play more into how easy they are to train.
I really love all dogs but the golden retriever is one of my favourite dog.
Same!
same
Best dogs ever dude!!!
Me too
I couldn't believe how easy my golden was to train compared to my Labrador
We have one of each and you are spot on regarding cleaning up the fur. Our chocolate lab's fur gets everywhere and its coarse and pokey when it gets in clothes or blankets. Its much more work cleaning up her shorter hair than it is our golden's longer hair! Our lab also has WAY more energy than our golden. Its not even a competition, and our lab is 12 while the golden is 3. Labs are fantastic dogs and I love ours dearly, but in my experience at least, labs are a lot more work to exercise!
thank you for sharing!!
Well, for sure, don't live long enough, Zara our American breed Golden passed away 2 weeks ago after giving us 10 years of unconditional love..... God we miss her. Thanks for your info, btw......have to have another when the hurting stops, a boy this time.
Rob and Tya. xx
I have a golden lab that I absolutely could not live without. They really are special dogs. We nicknamed him scoop though because they are some seriously food centric dogs if you know what I mean lol.
I have had golden retrievers for 30 years. Best dogs ever.
This is very informative video. I lost my GR to Cancer @ only 7 years. Please do regular health check especially CT scan / ultra sound / colonoscopy etc
We’ve had a black lab female and a yellow lab male. Now we watch our daughter’s Golden female a few days a week. All great dogs but have to say, the Golden is by far the most entertaining. “Fluffy goofball” is spot on!
Labs and Goldens are wonderful; had the privilege of living and taking care of both.
"Labs are more driven"
> Looks at my lab napping by my feet
...Sure, we'll go with that
Driven to nap
I just adopted a 3 year old golden…she is such a sweet dog…expensive yes…priceless also yes. 😂🤣. So glad I can give her a home…in a very short period of time…she owns me, but she takes good care of me 🥰
Just got our 4th golden we lost other due to cancer great funny friendly dogs.
Our dog’s mom was a lab, dad was a golden. If often feels like we got the best of both worlds.
Is the hair thicker than a pure lab but not as much as a pure golden?
@@Lauren-u3d I would say she looks 95% like a yellow lab. She has a slightly fluffy tail. But she's big, lean and muscular, weighs about 104lb in the winter and 96lb in the summer (she's an avid swimmer). Her coat is thick - lots of shedding, just like a lab and a golden. She's on a raw diet, and our pool is salt water. At seven years old we're always getting compliments on how soft her coat is.
Love them both! Gentle and kind❤❤
We have had both. Loved them both great di
As someone with a Labrador I would say that they are so easy to train because the have an obsession with food
Over the years we've owned two yellow labs and one black lab. We now have a 7 month old Golden Retriever. While the labs pretty much never did a naughty thing in their lives the golden does something naughty daily. Last week she got up at the table and got my wife's $300 sunglasses and chewed them up in minutes. We can't take her in the horse pasture because she eats horse poop like it's cotton candy. That being said the golden is nonstop fun, super high energy, refuses to be ignored and makes us laugh all day. She is gorgeous, almost regal and when we take her anywhere people can't keep their hands off her. She's quite the trip.
Do you have Labrador vaccination chart?
Eating animal poop can be a sign that she is missing some minerals or vitamins.
I'm a black lab mom and she is absolutly perfect. So kind with everybody, very smart and she listens quite well. Only thing is that they always need to do something, being entertained.
I wanted to know the answer to this question for a long time thank you for the video! If I had a choice I'd go with a Golden, but my lab needed to be rescued here in South Korea so I'm just doing my best to give him what he needs, rather than focusing on what I need. Nicely explained video 👏
I lost my cream golden Winston in my divorce. Still get to see the little bastard occasionally but I pine for him every day
We had 2 Labradors in the past, and now a Golden. While they are different, they are both the sweetest dogs ever!
Both are great dogs. I have a golden and I had a flatcoat. IMO, the flat coat is the better dog of these three because they have the best of all. Heart, mind, a youthful attitude and fantastic with kids from infants to teens. My niece learned to stand and to walk with the help of our flatcoat, and while I suspect out golden would have put up with the fur pulling, the climbing, etc, I don’t think my golden would have invited her to hold on to her tail for balance and take very small steps…or throw themselves between a falling toddler and any objects so they only get a mouthful of fur instead of impacting a chair leg or a fireplace bench. Our flatcoat did both. However, strangers seem to love/trust goldens more than flatcoats. Everyone comes up to our golden wanting to pet her. Our flatcoat would have loved that, but people tended to shy away more. We’ve taken to calling it golden privilege.
My buddies' chocolate lab weighed in at 107 lbs back in the 80's and didn't look fat. Rowdy was a big, big boy and gentle as can be.
I’ve re-homed an 8 month old retriever (my fourth). He was a ‘lockdown dog’ and wasn’t socialised as a young puppy, he also was never walked on a leash. I’ve had him a year now and we’ve pretty much cracked the walking. However he’s still very reactive to most other dogs (especially small breeds); he’s much less reactive to other retrievers and labradors….seems like he recognises his ‘cousins’! He’s improving slowly but I’d be interested to hear of anyone’s similar experiences and especially suggested solutions!🇬🇧
Is he doing better? I had a black Lab and Cairn Terrier growing up at the same time. My god it was fun to watch both of them go.
@@Caper1144yes thanks he’s much improved, only reactive to a couple of other dogs now, one of those is a bit aggressive so it’s to be expected
I've always had both Golden Retrievers & Labrador's , We currently have 3 Black Labrador's & I'd agree Golden Retrievers are more intelligent, Both Dog's are surprisingly Good Guard Dog's & are extremely Loyal & Protective over their family , I'd recommend them to anyone.
My current and prior dog were both Goldadors. Golden Retriever - Labrador Retriever mix. Best of both worlds! Both had the softer coat, but looked more Labrador look. Both were cream/gold or caramel in colour.
I have a lab and we self trained her to be a service dog. I was amazed how smart she is and how fast she picks up on her training. It's amazing.
Wish we could have one of each. Both breeds are known for admirable working and companion traits. But, we chose a GSD, again. She's got the Lab's reliable work ethic with the Golden's goofus charm. Our 4.5 yr old girl is strong, smart, & gorgeous. She joined our family 18 months ago, already Schutzhund certified....Agility trained....& Good Citizen (Veterans events) awarded. The health status of her prior owner (retired USN veteran) made her available to us.
We enjoy visits with some Goldens and a few Labs that family and friends have.
Both brilliant family dogs. 😍
Love Goldens. We are on our 5th, 6th and 7th Goldens in past 27 years. Would not do anything different! Love, Love, Love Goldens! Our Family after our kids left.
Reply about living longer. For past 3 or 4 goldens we have intentionally waited longer to get our Golden girls fixed. Think we have found that waiting longer to let hormones work longer before getting them fixed helps with hip displasia or patellar luxation or other orthopedic problems with Goldens. Ie. Letting them keep their natural hormones longer helps with better development of hips and knees, etc. Not scientific, but just what we have personally observed, and think there has been a difference. Some of our early pure breed goldens suffered from hip displasia, and more so with knee problems with patelas (knee joint tendons) not growing and working right. Past few goldens we have waited till about 2 years old before getting them fixed and hips and knees seem better. Subjective but FYI.
I've had both. I loved them all! My black labs were a lot more protective than my golden. But, my golden didn't kill my chickens...my labs would kill them every chance they got. 🤦♀️ As far as cancer goes, my black lab had terminal cancer at 9 years old! We were devastated when we had to put her down. Her sister, lived to be just shy of 12 years old, but had really bad diabetes for the last 2 1/2 years of her life. That meant giving her two shots of insulin every day, and poking her to check her blood sugar, at least twice a day. If we had to do a blood curve, we had to poke her more. She was diagnosed with diabetes; two days later, her sister was diagnosed with cancer. 😢 That was really tough! My golden, did get cancer, but not until she was 13. She lived to be 14, and she was active, right up until the end! As I said, I love all of my dogs, but my golden definitely had a longer life than my labs.
I'm a Golden fan, but they are slow to mature and can have health problems. My current dog is a Golden cross. She looks like a black Golden Retriever. She has the termperment of a Golden. I see other Golden crosses on my walks. Without exception, they are terrific dogs.
Agree. Both don’t live nearly long enough. 😢 We have our 7th Golden now, and over the decades, have found they live between 11-14 years. Pretty much all large breeds don’t live as long as smaller breeds. Just a fact…and has nothing to do with the specific breed. Goldens and Labs have similar temperament, and make GREAT family dogs, and very trainable. Goldens shed more than Labs, but both shed. I would also say that Labs, in general, are more active than Golden’s…although that is not always the case. We have 2 Goldens right now…and one is a couch potato, while the other is into everything.
Thanks for these videoss. The thought of owning a dog and running around with them sounds very fun. But all the tips and advice are very much appreciated when it comes to all the different behavioral traits and such. 😌
There are also English and American breeds of Labrador Retrievers as well and the energy level difference is huge. Had a Golden for 12 years and he was a Amazing dog, so much that I went 20 years before getting another dog. My Yellow Lab ( Moji ) is 2 1/2 now and is loved by everyone he meets.
If I had to say something negative it would be that he sheds an incredible amount, invest in a very good vacuum and it’s not that big of deal.
Great video!
I've had both. Multiple times and at the same time. Golden. No question about it. They are always smarter and more lovable, less destructive. I'm Golden only from here on out.
Out of Golden Retrievers, Golden Doodles and Labrador Retrievers the GOLDEN RETRIEVER WINS BY MILES!
They are smarter, calm and not hyper, easier to train well, listen and follow commands much better, more friendly and cuddly. Overall they aren't even close or in the same league as their close alternatives. I've never seen a mean or hyper Golden Retriever. I don't think I have seen a Labrador Retriever that wasn't. Golden Doodles have Poodle mixed in with the Golden Retriever and while they are better dogs than Labs they aren't the same or have the same disposition as 99% of Golden Retrievers. You couldn't ask for a better breed or dog if you seek a family member and loving companion.
I've been rescuing/ adopting Golden/Lab x GSD mixes for the past 40 years. I look for a gold color with a black nose marking, and a Lab type head. I've hit the jackpot three times, with a very sweet, energetic dog that is very easy to train, has a great distinctive personality, and terrific with animals and people. As a side effect, they have been strongly prey driven with squirrels and rabbits, and will chase cats, [and anything that runs] but not as prey (to try to kill). They seem to have the it intelligence of a GSD with the personality of a Lab (rather than a Golden)... and they are handsome dogs ... that glow in the sun, and shed profusely in the house. The first two had AKC titles and were therapy dogs. The current dog is wonderful with people but too exuberant and noisy to be a therapy dog.
I have 3 labs, I’d be rich if I didn’t have them. But I love them all so much. the happiness memories I have as a child is just sitting outside playing with my family dogs, I got a dog of my own 15 years after my family dogs passed. Best decision ever.
The answer, of course is YES!!! ILL TAKE ONE OF EACH...❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have a American Chocolate Lab and he was easy to teach as a pup and now at 2 1/2 yrs he is the best.
My male golden seems to understand size differences. My grandkids range in age and size from 13 to 4 and I’ve seen Rocky lay on his belly to play with the 4 year old kids and raising up to play with the bigger ones. He also adjusts his ‘tug’ in tug of war between barely holding it to full blown pull with the older ones. As far as their coats, the gulden’s hair kind of floats. It doesn’t stick into fibers
I had a Golden retriever called Maya and she was unlucky, My father and I stayed bad, I hope to live with Maya better, I'm crying
I've wanted a life more happy with My dog now she is in heaven
Just an observation, maybe someone can fill in the context. It’s wild that despite their similarities you can’t find a Golden at a shelter to adopt and they cost $1,500-$2,000 to purchase from a breeder, while if you scroll on any local animal shelter they have many Labrador Retriever puppies or young dogs. I’m assuming because the labs are mixed, but still interesting! Great video.
I've always had pits but a year n half ago I bought a mix breed for $300 and he is one of the most handsome mixes I've ever seen, his dad was a rambling Lab and his mom was a rottie and he looks like a gold rottie, he has the gold color with darker areas around face and other places not rottie style at all. But he's 100lbs of pure goofball and has a sweet heart, it took a year n half to even hear him have an authoritative bark, I've never heard him growl. He likes to practice tough guy while playing but when in a confrontation he hauls butt wants no part of it. But he looks as if he could be a monster but Fast swinging tail gives away his sweet demeanor. I have no plans on neutering only if there's a reason to in the future, he doesn't run loose and he's not mean or aggressive so why strip his testosterone for no reason, my pit/ hound mix that just passed was intact and he lasted 14 years and was in great physical shape up until the last year or so. It just seems todays culture is to snip em without question. And it's not always necessary as a matter of fact my dog has been attracted a few times all neutered dogs. I actually sent an email to local shelter because I see an adorable puppy that was only 3 months old and tiny and had been neutered already by them, that is not good for him at all, that is going to ensure health problems no question especially if he grows to a large size. I said they could adopt him out with a how ever many month contract to have him neutered vs strip his testosterone as a toddler.
The price issue is not a problem. Many states have breed specific rescue groups where you can get a perfectly fine dog for under $200. I've had one Lab and many mixed Labs: Lab/Pit, Lab/Samoyed, Lab/Husky. The Lab temperament came through in all of them. Wonderful dogs. Great with my cats. About to get another.
Yes Karen, you're the savior of bully breeds.
I,ve had seven labs in my life! I love labs but my first best friend was a neighbor,s golden! He came to my house everyday to say hi!
Great video thank you
I just got a black lab puppy and I watched this video to see which one I had and now I know the things that differ about them
They are both my top 2 cutest by far there just so cuteeee
Honey is our third golden and has truly been a Honey in every sense of the word since the day we adopted her when she was seven. I know we will not have her forever - she is now fourteen and a half - but I have never regretted doing away with black pants and dresses for any of the three.
There is a sub-set of the Golden Retriever called the sporting or hunting Golden Retrievers. They tend to be much more red in color, and fairly popular in Minnesota.
Interesting!
