Our English chocolate lab passed away in 2015 after 9.5 years. He was extremely intelligent and had endless energy to play, but he was also a huge cuddler and super chill. He was the only dog I've met who had zero fear of the vacuum; I could literally vacuum underneath him while he stood still. I usually had to ask him to move to another room so I could vacuum where he was laying. I also remember he was very disciplined with people food. I could leave my plate of pizza on the coffee table and go get a napkin, and he wouldn't even so much as sniff what was on my plate. Such a good boy
Our yellow English was like that with a vacuum. He would lay on his bed and watch you run it all around him, heck, I could hold the hose on his fur when brushing him - he did not care. Canons, fireworks, the vacuum, any loud noise and it did not phase him at all. Food on the other hand was his downfall. Well "unattended food" that is. We lived on a lake and I had just finished grilling 10 pounds of chicken breasts (boneless) and a boat crashed into our dock. My wife and I ran out to see what was happening and he made his move. The platter was in the middle of the table with 4 places set and the chairs pushed in. When I came back into the house everything looked the same except the platter was empty; the chairs were where they belonged and not a dish, fork or glass was out of place. I figured my wife had put the chicken in the fridge. Nope. One look at my boy who was always trim showed a huge belly and of course he was smiling. Called our old country vet and after he got done laughing told us to let him sleep it off. After a rather healthy bowel movement the next morning he was his normal self. He never would have given that platter a second look if we had been in the house.
I agree and my boy has never been afraid of loud noises such as thunder and fireworks. After realizing and then researching this is due to his parents and others around were all trained in hunting/ retrieving and use to gun shot from the womb
Our English Lab loves to BE vacuumed!! He will lay there, and let you use the brush attachment on him. SO you can comb, and vacuum him at same time.!! :)
Definitely the AMERICAN LAB. I had the BEST TWO EVER! They were litter mates and lived their lives as the best of friends for 12 and 14 years respectively! I’d give anything to have them back with me! 💞💞
I have had both. The American was a more aggressive retriever and easier to train for duck hunting. The British lab I had possessed a wonderful personality and was, over all, easier to manage in the field. She minded better and was more patient. My next one will be a British lab that I will train to hunt. They have the instincts, you just have to develop them.
These are dogs that live their best life when they have a job. A good lab can both flush out and pick up perfectly. The better you train them the happier they are.
I totally agree. I have had both also, and my experience was similar. I prefer the English lab for the reasons given. My English yellow lab was known in our neighborhood as the Mayor of Berkeley! He’s been gone 13 years and I still miss him.
As I watched the video, I imagined my best match for a lab would plop somewhere in the middle, like a cross between an American and an English. My young American lab tended to go deaf trailing a bird in the field and flushed them out of range until we put in the work over a period of years while she grew up and settled down. An English lab with a lower drive that could stay interested in an upland hunt at a modest pace would be just my speed. And when duck hunting, I don't really care about a dog making a spectacular leap into the water and speed boating out to the bird - I don't need a trial bred dog. A round trip in slow mode still gets the bird to hand. On the other hand, there are times a high drive is needed for a dog to brush crash through big stands of cattails and put in a heap of athletic work to come up with the bird, but that scenario isn't typical in the area I hunt now. Suffice to say, I like your thinking while having experience with both kinds. An English lab with encouragement and training just might be the best balance for a combination hunter and easy going family pet.
My first boy was an English (RIP sweet boy). My boy now is an American. My American was definitely more agile and athletic, but I prefer the build of the English. My English did stand just a tid bit shorter than my American, but what a dang brick house he was. Love it. You can't go wrong with either one. Best dog ever.
It really is this simple, if you want a dog for strictly a pet, choose the English, if you want a high energy working/hunting dog that requires lots of outdoor time, get the American. They both are fantastic, loving dogs! I have had American labs my entire adult life and love the way they adapt to the family. I just got my first English puppy 3 weeks ago. I chose him because I'm getting older and slower, and he definitely takes less of my energy to fulfill his needs for exercise. Either way, if you want a loyal, happy, loving family pet, get a Labrador!
We've have both types of Labradors... a Chocolate and a Black - the Chocolate was a female and the Black is a male. Choco was an English, Black is American. She was built for COMFORT. He's built for SPEED. But guess what? They are both built for LOVE!!!
We have just got our 2nd golden lab after our lab of 12 years passed away. Max, was such a doll and part of our family. An absolute dreamboat of a fella.
Have had both. Absolutely no difference in the training. Both types easy to train and incredibly friendly. Currently have an American Chocolate coming up to 12 years old. Best dog we have ever owned.
I am currently waiting to get my first English black labrador. She is being trained (and will continue to be trained) to be my service dog. She is only 6 months old but has picked up all her basic commands quite easily. Needless to say, I am very excited and proud to be providing her with a forever home. There aren't many like her in Idaho...there are several American Labs but English Labs are rarer. I got her from Mellow Yellow/English Silver Labradors in Payette, Idaho. 😄
I’ve had both and apart from the fact I love the squarer head, they’re both fantastic, loveable and smart. We lost our choccie at 13 a couple of months ago and now have a show bred chunky boy who is hilarious, smart and good company, there are so many up for re homing
I have an English black lab named Monty 💓 first lab I’ve owned. He is the sweetest, most loving and goofy guy. I know now that I will always have a Labrador, no turning back once you’ve had one in the family. Best dogs ever 🥰
Our boy was an English style lab. He lived to be 11 and was a wonderful dog. He attained CGC, CD AND CDX obedience titles, and was joyful when he was working in obedience...he really loved to perform and to please. He was so gentle and playful with children. His pedigree included several Dickendall ancestors. A warning though...he was as energetic and mischievous as an American style lab until he was about 2. It was a relief when he calmed down a bit. His health problems included knee joint repair, and recurrent ear infections.
Makes no difference which you choose, you will have a great companion. NOTHING can beat the wonderful disposition of a Lab!!! Lost two to Lymphoma at 7 years but now have two rescue Labs who are wonderful to play, cuddle, walk with.
I have a chocolate American Lab. She comes from a champion hunting line. I am a marathon runner and she trains with me, running up to 23 miles. Arriving back at home, she is still ready to fetch her beloved ball and go for a swim in the lake, very high energy level. Best and most intelligent dog I’ve ever owned. She is truly my companion. Currently 5 yrs old, I plan on her being around for quite a few more years. There isn’t a mean hair on her body, a true love.
I have a 10 yr old black American lab and she runs with me on my runs training for cross country. It’s fun telling other cross country runners my dog is a better distance runner than them
Great descriptive video of the differences between English and American Labs. Our first lab was a black American-type and was hands-down the smartest dog we’ve ever had. He passed away at 14 yrs. We recently got an English lab pup; he’s definitely more of a “wide body” with beautiful conformation and temperament. He has paws the size of small plates so we’re in for a big boy! Thank you for sharing this video!
I've owned two Yellow English Labs, Buddy Nr 1 and Buddy Nr 2. Both passed from health issues at a little over 10 years old. After grieving for two years after my last boy passed, I got an 8 week old Black American Lab male, Buddy Nr 3, who will be one year old in about 2 weeks. He's been quite the challenge, but I don't regret it. Big plus: my old Frisbee skills are returning! He gets two 15 minute sessions of frisbee daily. A tired Lab is a happy Lab. Happy Holidays Fair winds and following seas to all.
I lost my first dog from pup to adult at age 14...Lab/ Chessie mix. I wanted to wait until my last duty station to commit to a dog. She was a great dog. Now i have an English lab and a beagle. They are best of friends and I am blessed to have them both. They are all special in their own way. Enjoy #3 and #4 and so on. Take care Gunny!
@@usnchief1339 Respect, Chief. Hope the retirement is going well. We recently came close to getting another Black American male from the same breeder (same Mom & Dad). But Buddy Nr 3 has exhibited signs of EIC (exercise induced collapse). He's under warranty for that, but we couldn't bear to return him. His Frisbee sessions are now limited to 5 minutes three times a day. Best to you & yours.
My family has owned 2 black, a yellow and recently got our first chocolate this past fall. It’s hard to imagine our family without one. We always have at least 2. Best family dogs.
I have a 4 year old female American chocolate lab that we love and she is very fit. She just loves retrieving balls in our backyard and I think she would do it 24/7 if she could!😁 She's a great dog, That said, I wouldn't mind one more like the English version that's a little more mellow when it comes to demanding exercise 😀 ! Great video, I didn't know there is an American and an English version of Labs, so I learned something new today. Thanks!
I have an American male, 19 mo. old yellow lab. He is approx. 70 lbs. He is crazy smart and has a very strong play drive. I have taught him a new command in a day or day & a half. He has a very strong desire to please & is very kind. He loves all dogs, cats & people. He is tightly bonded to me - like, I can't move 3 ft. without him following. He will fetch a toy until you can't throw it anymore.
I had an English lab that recently passed, he was the most chill dog I've had. His surviving brother is an American Chocolate Lab and when he's on...it's go time
I also had a black lab/yellow & chocolate mix named Joe when I was a kid and a black lab/pitbull mix named Brutus, they we're the best as well. Joe was super protective and loving, atleast to me anyways, he didn't care for anyone else except my dad, he was definately my dog, my dad took me over to his friends house a few months after his Akita attacked me when I was 5, she tore my forehead open to the skull, had to have 18 stitches across my forehead and my left eyebrow is split. I still can't see a black and white Akita without a bit of anxiety. I've gotten over it for the most part, but I have my moments. I have severe PTSD from a few bad things that have happened. Eddie has really helped with it when I have anxiety attacks. He will lay up against me and force me to pet him until I snap out of it. Thank God for dogs, and cats for that matter. They have helped me through some really hard times in my life. Stay safe out there everyone!
My current dog is Golden Tinto III. Yes, I have had a Tinto I and Tinto II. They have all been a little bit different. I have had 1 Lab and 1 Border Collie. The Collie was the smartest of them all.
I’ve owned both but I prefer the more slender working American lab. I find dogs bred for work are more energetic and clever. (Although all labs are smart.) The heavier labs often have more structural issues. Love the big labs too but after spending 12,000 on new knees and spinal surgeries, never again! My lighter lab has competed in agility, frisbee and works everyday as my guide dog. I don’t mind the increase in training as I’m not looking for a couch dog. My guide dog is now 8 1/2 and I’m starting a new puppy next month. looking forward to it! The smaller sized American labs fit much better under plane and bus seats. Anyone else here who is blind and trains their own guide?
Had no idea that could be done. I suppose that the older dog trains the younger dog to some extent. My eye site is getting pretty bad. I think I would go with a Lab if it comes to that.
We bought 2 sisters from the same litter. One definitely more British than the other in appearance. Interesting to note that the American sister has had 2 litters now with almost all pups " appearing" with the definite British features. Both our girls are smart, eager to please. Our British sister seems much more emotional and bonded , yet both are lovable.
For 30 years we’ve had field labs now we have a yellow English. He is catching on very quickly to sign and verbal command and is calm and socially he likes to be with other dogs is friendly. He prefers other labs to hang with. Almost 5 months❤
I have a 1/2 American 1/2 English lab that is 3 years old and she is the perfect mix of both ❤ she is light blone with red / dirty blonde highlights i love her with all of my heart ❤️
On our third American Lab… great dogs, lots of energy and smart. Beautiful coats that rarely need bathing. A spritz with water containing a drop of dawn.. wipe off with a towel… good as new.
We have an English golden Lab, Wonderfully dog but was quite challenging for the first 18 months, quite stubborn! He’s coming up for 9 this year he still looks fantastic and loves his walks but we do have to moderate his exercise somewhat as he does have elbow problems. By the way he’s 32kg so not overweight. We have 2 grandchildren and he is fantastic with them, I think he sees them as playmates
I have a mix - dad is a english lab and mom is an american lab. Nobu appears to be an american with high energy, loves fetch and water. He is tall (26.5") weighing 100 pounds with long muzzel, however his chest is broad and he has a thick otter tail. Truly unique! I love labs!
We have a Labradoodle whose Mum was an American/Working Labrador. She is the most magnificent family dog, intelligent, energetic, fun and loving. My vote goes to the America/Working Lab, although both are great dogs.
hey just wondering? ive seen research done that silver labs arent fully labs and that arnt always bred right? we already have a black lab and have fallen inlove with a silver lab puppy but would prefer to know
@@clairecolville5594 at this point silvers are like any other color. The quality of the breeder is more important than the color. Our silver developed diabetes in his later years but our yellow had osteosarcoma. I think it’s random like with humans.
My English yellow lab is 10 now and he is my best friend he’s so loving and has helped me so much with my mental health and addiction struggles he’s always stayed loyal and loving ever since we got him at 6 weeks old as a puppy and he was so cute I’m at college now freshman year and miss my dog so much
Our family started since 1975 and has had American labs since 2002, but being that parents are in their retirement years, the last 25 years since 2002 has been English Labradors and we have not turned back.....Ms. Lacey was our sweet angel that will live in infamy....... Bailey, our 10 year old yellow lab is our love and continues to be so and our 2 year old black lab named Brenna is our last, and she's full of life and spunk!!!
This info is so spot on, thanks for this vid! My family couldn't figure out why our new lab pup looks so diffrent. 9 out of 10(honestly speaking, I feel like it's 10 out of 10)Labrador dogs we see here in Korea are American labs. Finally found out our goofball is an English lab. lol We were so concerned about his athleticism not knowing the differences in diffrent types of labs. Just shoked how the Korean lab kennel didn't inform us about this, they are one of very few kennel specializes in Lab dogs here. Totally blown away🤭
Really good comparison video. My 1st yellow American lived and worked till he was 11.5yrs. My current yellow is also American both are great hunters and social dogs but are certainly different
Love the shape of the English labs head... It is different than the American one. More block-like. The red fox ones are gorgeous but not a common one , its variation of the yellow ones.
We’ve had several labs and lab mixes and they all lived to about 14 ( three still living) and have been wonderful dogs. All were adopted. Daily walks, healthy food, healthy weight and lots of activity and love keep them vibrant and young for years. I couldn’t live without dogs and labs are the best for me and my husband , although, as we get older having three is a bit much :)
I have 2 black female labs. One English and one American. The English has insane stamina but less agile, the American is faster and more agile. The English is older now so I am only taking the American with me on mountaineering and I’m telling you, they say they are talented in hunting and being close to family and so on, which I agree, but if you’re into this sport try it. You will be amazed of their natural talent in these harsh environments, their orientation skills and how much they enjoy it. After the third ascent we did together, she is always leading.
2 of our previous labs were English. They were very active, but also very gentle, especially as they got older. Our current lab is an American, and she is the complete opposite, she’s absolutely bonkers.
This is VERY misleading overall. Labs are LABS when it comes to energy, need for exercise, intelligence and trainability… they are a wonderful breed if you have the time to put into them (they need it). Like any breed, every specific dog is different in their individual personality. So any dog will have a variance in their personality. My 15 yr old English passed away a few years ago and she was amazingly smart and very well trained in obedience and agility. However, she was nuts in regards to energy! That’s why we started agility training to begin with. It gave her an outlet for her energy and she was so motivated by it. Everyone kept saying, oh she’ll calm down when she’s a yr or two. She didn’t. Ok maybe 3, maybe 6 yrs old?…NOPE. She was 9 when there was a noticeable calm. Even then, she was pretty high energy for most of her life. She was a truly amazing dog and I still miss her terribly. We are getting ready to get a new English lab puppy in a couple weeks and I am so curious to find out her personality. It’s been a long time since I had a lab puppy in my house, it’s going to be interesting! 🦮
I got myself a black American Lab. His mane is Kenji and he's now a little over a year old. He had been a real trial to begin with, but he's settled down now and I'm so happy to have him...he is turning out to be my best friend. If you get a Lab and are surprised by their lunatic behaviour, stick with them, give them plenty of exercise, be kind and have a trainer in for the first 8 months or so. You won't be sorry.
AFAIK there are both "field" and "show" lines of English labs there. "Fields" have longer muzzles. Some "show" lines may have Mastiff blood added (that's what I read once).
My silver American field lab has been the face of major dog food brands in europe A fine boy indeed. If your in Europe you have likey seen him on your dog food bags.
I had a lab named Thor, they said he was a mix of American and English, ( thick body of an English, slender face of American) he was the best dog I ever had, alway was loving, goofy, eager to please. There are days I think of him and miss him a lot.
My dad uses his for working dogs(retrieving birds) he has both the American and English labs and they both work well but his American lab does have more drive
All Labs Matter. Joking aside, I got the American breed and most people I met were surprised to learn that there are two types of Lab. Because they're somewhat confuse about my dog being slender and taller, than the ones they regular see.
I had the american lab. He just passed away. He was the most beautiful dog ever even when he was older. I miss him so much.
Same here!

Currently 5 yrs old, I plan on her being around for quite a few more years. There isn’t a mean hair on her body, a true love.
I have a 10 yr old black American lab and she runs with me on my runs training for cross country. It’s fun telling other cross country runners my dog is a better distance runner than them
I love my American Black Lab! Incredible dog and a better friend!
Getting a black English boy pup in 2 weeks! Great video
I love all labs ❤️
Yeah me too!:)
Happy Holidays
Fair winds and following seas to all.
I have a Chocolate English and Black American lab. They are both the most precious, priceless angel that anyone can imagine.
English is my favorite. I have an American mix right now but she's plenty lovable too. Definitely can tell a difference from my English to this one
Currently have one of each. My black English lab will turn 13 in March. My yellow American bogy lab is 1 year old and my service dog, DAD & mobility.
I have an 11 month old American Black Lab I love her so much she is absolutely a perfect dog for me and my family.
We’ve had two labs come and go in our years. We’re in our late 60s and tomorrow we pick up an American lab puppy. Yep. We’re crazy.
Thank you for such an informative video. I've had a working line GSD and getting my first field Lab. I'm excited to train it. Hope I'm ready.
Thanks!
English Lab I had Cosmo for 13 yrs & he was my best Buddy he was chocolate I miss him everyday
sorry buddy. I know the feeling.
I have an English labrador, I always wondered why his size is smaller n other things ,after watching your video doubts cleared
(Although all labs are smart.)
The heavier labs often have more structural issues.
Anyone else here who is blind and trains their own guide?
can someone tell me the approximate size of the neck circumference of a full grown American lab?
How about working line of English lab, instead of show line? :)
Had no idea that could be done. I suppose that the older dog trains the younger dog to some extent. My eye site is getting pretty bad. I think I would go with a Lab if it comes to that.
Well done for training your own assistance dog.
I have a half English and American he’s the best dog I’ve ever had even though he’s a bit crazy
For 30 years we’ve had field labs now we have a yellow English. He is catching on very quickly to sign and verbal command and is calm and socially he likes to be with other dogs is friendly. He prefers other labs to hang with. Almost 5 months❤
I have one English lab and one American lab! They are both great dogs! Both are loyal barkers !
Love my English lab. So gentle with my children and loves to hang out on the boat! She is the best.
I have a 1/2 American 1/2 English lab that is 3 years old and she is the perfect mix of both ❤ she is light blone with red / dirty blonde highlights i love her with all of my heart ❤️
In the UK they are referred to as working or show breed
Love those Stonnie footage 😁
I have an english yellow. He’s the sweetest, most handsome pup. His favorite game to play with us is hide n seek :)
Mine too 🤣
I have an English Labrador Retriever puppy. And i loved him
On our third American Lab… great dogs, lots of energy and smart.
The American is my preference.
same mine was a working line from England, i think working labs in England are the american type
can someone tell me the approximate size of the neck circumference of a full grown American lab?
@@sophie4019 my 8 year old has a neck circumference of 19.5 inches (50 cm). He is in very good shape.
@@sophie4019 my 8 year old male has a neck circumference of 19.5 inches (49.5 cm). He was one of the larger pups in the litter. Still lean and fit.
I have a mix - dad is a english lab and mom is an american lab. Nobu appears to be an american with high energy, loves fetch and water. He is tall (26.5") weighing 100 pounds with long muzzel, however his chest is broad and he has a thick otter tail. Truly unique! I love labs!
I love your description. I miss my lab so much.
We have a Labradoodle whose Mum was an American/Working Labrador. She is the most magnificent family dog, intelligent, energetic, fun and loving. My vote goes to the America/Working Lab, although both are great dogs.
This one of my favorite dogs..i will say American labor. Like there looks and there hunting working spirit..this is a dog that make me happy
Definitely prefer American. We lost our two over the past year. One was 14 (Silver) and one was almost 12 (Yellow). Great dogs…miss them every day.
hey just wondering? ive seen research done that silver labs arent fully labs and that arnt always bred right? we already have a black lab and have fallen inlove with a silver lab puppy but would prefer to know
@@clairecolville5594 at this point silvers are like any other color. The quality of the breeder is more important than the color. Our silver developed diabetes in his later years but our yellow had osteosarcoma. I think it’s random like with humans.
@@craigmartin1727 ok thankyou so much! this definetly cleared things up. yours must of been very healthy to live up to 14 :)
Finally found out our goofball is an English lab. lol
We were so concerned about his athleticism not knowing the differences in diffrent types of labs. Just shoked how the Korean lab kennel didn't inform us about this, they are one of very few kennel specializes in Lab dogs here. Totally blown away🤭
Labs are Canadian or English...
English lab much better looking thick strong and solid and that beautiful square big head and thick neck just beautiful dog!
HI!! Do you want to own a cute and funny t-shirt with a labrador dog print?

I have a yellow block headed short nose British Lab. I've always owned American Labs but I just love the build and strength of my British Lab.
I have the same he's 140 pounds all muscle never gets tired and too smart for his own good sometimes and extremely powerful dog .
Really good comparison video. My 1st yellow American lived and worked till he was 11.5yrs. My current yellow is also American both are great hunters and social dogs but are certainly different
A proud owner of Theodore, my chocolate lab who is an American bred lab from a great line hunting of Labs in Crosby Texas! ❤️
I have a 1 year old English lab and she is so cute I literally can’t her face is so perfect-
You described our American Lab perfectly
English is a great combination of love and service. Ours is a blessing to our home
English!! Love our Chocolate English girl, Lily ❤️
I have a fox red American lab, and although they are similar in many ways to an English Lab, the American looks stunningly handsome.
Thanks you for your insights. It sounds like she was an awesome dog. How’s life with the new one who probably is 2 yo by now ?
My one English Lab is a big “let’s hang out and cuddle” while my four American Labs (three have passed) are “let’s go go go go go go!!!”
I'm an American and when I was a child somehow me and my parents had the sweetest English yellow lab he was soooo sweet and mellow ❤
His name was bear❤
My silver American field lab has been the face of major dog food brands in europe
A fine boy indeed. If your in Europe you have likey seen him on your dog food bags.
I have liked a blend of both best dog I ever had English and American
Best dog I ever had was part Lab . A Labernard to be exact , half American Lab , half St. Bernard. Put him in a script I’m working on as a tribute.
I have both english & american lab, and i love them so much 🥰
And also I have a jack Russell terrair at home already can you make a vid on them?
Will put them on the list :)
Thanks help a lot
🐶
I had a lab named Thor, they said he was a mix of American and English, ( thick body of an English, slender face of American) he was the best dog I ever had, alway was loving, goofy, eager to please. There are days I think of him and miss him a lot.
I have 2 American Labs a black and yellow. Both won best of breed consecutive years.
My dad uses his for working dogs(retrieving birds) he has both the American and English labs and they both work well but his American lab does have more drive
My British lab, Beau lived to 12 years. Best. Dog. Ever!
Love all Labs, mine was American. Now have a boxer
All Labs Matter. Joking aside, I got the American breed and most people I met were surprised to learn that there are two types of Lab. Because they're somewhat confuse about my dog being slender and taller, than the ones they regular see.
Same! They always seem to think ours is a pit
Wow. It is awwww. Thank you for video. I love both. ❤❤❤
Both Labrador breeds are so wonderful ❤
English by far just put my Ruger down last April he will always be my best friend I hope we are together again someday.
