We have a 4-month old lab puppy, hasn’t learned to potty outside consistently and we use very gentle methods. He’s learning about sit, down, stay, and heal, sleeps in his crate well. He tears up plants, still jumps on us, and will come if no distractions. When he’s distracted, he turns into a knuckle headed tornado and is almost impossible to calmed and get back on track. He’s amazingly sweet and loves everyone and we fear he’s going to run up to the wrong dog or person and get hurt. Our other dogs are well trained and obedient but little of that seems to rub off on him. We’re in our 60’s and 70’s and wonder if this breed is too much for our age. He doesn’t seem to intuitively get that not all dogs want a puppy lunging at their face, no matter how sweet he is, and has been really slow to learn when to stop when another dog growls at him, and generally has to be knocked to the ground by the other dog before he’ll stop, if we don’t get him away in time. I hear some labs stay hyper their whole lives. He gets a 40-minute walk in the morning and another 15-20 in the evening before bed. He also get training sessions and free play sessions with one of our dogs. We raised a beautiful, well bev haven labradoodle 6 years ago, but this pup is 4x as much work.
We have a 4 month lab too, we found using the word "busy" for toilet time has helped completely stop him peeing inside, he's now started to wine at the back door too.
Mine is a bag of sugar! I don't have high expectations for him to be a guard dog😂, but what an amazing therapy he is, he knows how to brighten everyone's day!
Proper way of teaching and raising a pup is by looking how nature does it. How would momma/pappa dog punish/teach a pup? Be consistent, just, loving but have a firm hand. Hitting, spanking or even kicking a dog is senseless and you will lose more then you will gain. Grabbing them in the neck(skin) and pushing them onto to ground to submit or to surrender (paws up, on their back) is okay. You have to be calm yourself, don't shout but be firm. And whether you like it or not, the dog will always look-up to one of the family members and that's the one who is dominant. If none are dominant in a family the dog will be! Again, look at how nature does it, how a pack of dogs treat each other. You as owner/boss/pack-member must be the alpha, plain and simple. Never use aggressiveness to raise a dog or even a child. Being just, consistent and with lots of love you'll get the best out of a dog.
I own a black lab. A female. She’s already four. Playful, energetic, she can sleep for hours too though, affectionate to the point of it being too much sometimes and above all and at risk of people finding what I’m doing to say stupid: a wonderful friend and companion.
My chocolate lab is very enthousiastic for all dogs and people. Sniffing around everything/everywhere. Also a favourite of the neighbourhood. Very calm and easy going inside but can be a tornado outside. She grewed up and lives in the city so very calm around loud noices like busses, trams, cyclists, trains etc
I've had 3 labs all lived til age 17 yrs and all of them were well behaved even as puppies, they did puppy things but outgrew it. LOL . My female Sally was very protective over us (her family).and a great watchdog maybe its just an individual thing but all 3 dogs were good Sally the mom was the best.
Our 8mth old Labrador is a nightmare he bites all the time. Lunges at us, bites in the back of the leg when you dont see him coming. He jumps up and bites the hands arms and it hurts a lot. He is growing at a rate and is heavy and strong. He has a professional trainer and is brilliant with commands and does his lessons twice daily with no mistakes. The he is into the biting. Even treats dont stop the biting, he takes the treats and bites again. This guy is relentless and has given me nothing but grief for the last 6mths. He was taken by the breeder from his Mum at 4 weeks so lacking the training she would have given him, leaving us in a right old mess. He walked on the lead never taught to do so, loves our neighbours Retriever and is very friendly towards her, they eat together out of separate bowls and neighter one taking from the other. He sleeps well at night and was house trained very quickly. However, my patience is worn out, as I have to retreat to my office where he is not allowed into to escape his last lot of biting before bedtime. Exhausted.
I'm old school. My lab used to lunge at me and bulldoze me right over. I made sure she ran straight into my fist and she just looked at me shocked. The behavior stopped instantly however. For the biting we would pin her to the ground until she stopped fighting and let her go. We were consistent and it all stopped at less than one year old. Fantastic dog afterwards. They dont respond to weak handed treatment. They need to be trained firmly and consistently.
@justbobsmith great but it's hard for me to put a fist to my dog. Having a firm voice and letting them know you're the leader gives them boundaries. You can be alpha in the beginning without using physical aggressive boundaries. I have had a German Shepherd and she knew boundaries. None of my dogs nip nor try it on me.
When we had are lad as a pup, he used to jump and nip, but we fixed that problem by stepping on his back feet when he did those things, and it didn't take him long to figgier out not to do those things.
I recently bought a labrador, it's colour is fawn and it is still 3 months!!... Thank you for the tips , i will definitely make sure that i won't do such things , bye take care.
When we had are golden lab retriever, he was an excellent guard dog, we never trained him for that he just did it, he would let people near the house but then keep them there and not let them go, he did that to the paper boys he didn't know a few times or other people, but people he knew had no problem and he loved meeting them all the time, like the mail man, labs are excellent dogs, i miss him still.
My lab retriever bites alot even when i try to recorrext her and tries to bite my older shepherd/collie who just runs away. She has lots of toys and I do bedtimes, walks playtime but the biting is bad.
I have a Black Labrador as well. I'm trying to figure out how I can make her have a purpose in life rather than just being lazy. Shes a good dog, but I'm sure she would feel Like she has a accomplished something in life if you give her tasks to do.
My Labrador is too hiper am afraid to go near him. He always jump over me n tries to attack. He also damge all things n eats what he get be it bamboo, plastic etc.

I don't know what a labardor is but I have a Labrador and she is the most friendly companion I could ever ask for.
