Thank you for sharing this! I'll never forget seeing The Wiz as a child at The Goodman Theatre in Chicago, and the profound effect it had on me. I remember it being announced just before opening curtain that Stephanie Mills would not appearing on stage that night, and how disappointed some in the audience were, however her replacement was actually BETTER, which really drove home all the messages of inspiration that night.
(Sung by Nipsey Russel & Carousel Girls) What would I do If I could suddenly feel And to know once again That what I feel is real? I could cry I could smile I could lay back for a while Oh, tell me what What would I do if I could feel? What would I do If I could reach inside of me And to know how it feels To say I like what I see? Then I'd be more than glad to share All that I have inside of here And the songs My heart might bring You'd be more Than glad to sing And if tears should fall from my eyes Just think of all the wounds They could mend And just think of all the time I could spend Just being vuln'rable again Oh, tell me what What would I do? Oh, tell me what What would I do? Oh, tell me what What would I do If I could feel?
Yeah, fan of both this and the film version, BUT - this has the better vocals (He y'know SANG the song - which is a shame because nipsey russell has the range for it) But the film version has the decidedly better instrumental.
Here's my two cents about this compared to the Nipsey Russel sung version. I'd say that given the fact that this song is about somebody who has been rusted solid for many years and literally is an empty shell, Nipsey's whispered vocals and almost dialog performance fits the message of this song better than an all out soulful performance.
Except in the play it has a different context. This is sung in the Wiz's throne room in the play. In the film context, I agree, Nipsey's fits better. But in the play, this more soulful rendering works better.
+Gibson DelGiudice I know I'm a year late, but I completely agree with this. Nipsy's version was simply him telling Dorothy and the Scarecrow about his reasoning for a heart. In Tiger's version, the Wizard tells the Tin Man that he's lucky and missing out on certain things, but the Tin Man is telling the Wizard himself of the things he is missing out on in spite of that.
+RastaSaiyaman As others have said, I feel this version (along with Neyo's) fits the context of this song way better considering the context that it was originally used in. Plus it's really tear jerking when sung from the heart like this.
I will! I'm thankful that my university is teaching me to not appropriate other cultures by saying things like "music doesn't have a race". Because I understand that different music was created by, and therefore "belongs" to certain races. Like "The Wiz", which we are doing in the fall. So I will stay in school, thanks for the inspiration.
This song helped me as a child and it still helps me!!
The lyrics of this song are so surreal; I can aptly relate to it.
I'm playing guitar on this. The vocal is done by Tiger Haynes
Well you played the hell outta that guitar man and gave me a lifetime of great memories in the process. Thank you so much for your artistry.
Could you please make a video showing how to play that?
Excellent guitar playing and singing
I wish I cou5

This is my favorite song that I played in the Wiz
(Sung by Nipsey Russel & Carousel Girls)
What would I do
If I could suddenly feel
And to know once again
That what I feel is real?
I could cry
I could smile
I could lay back for a while
Oh, tell me what
What would I do if I could feel?
What would I do
If I could reach inside of me
And to know how it feels
To say I like what I see?
Then I'd be more
than glad to share
All that I have inside of here
And the songs
My heart might bring
You'd be more
Than glad to sing
And if tears should fall from my eyes
Just think of all the wounds
They could mend
And just think of all the time
I could spend
Just being vuln'rable again
Oh, tell me what
What would I do?
Oh, tell me what
What would I do?
Oh, tell me what
What would I do
If I could feel?
This is Tiger Haynes
John Manzari sang it at summer stage in NYC and tore it up! Crowd loved him. Even better vocals. Wish Nipsey had sung it too.
+Georgia of Awesome Huh? Nipsey DID sing this song. In the movie.
I have this on vinyl, love this track the best!
I prefer the official lyrics from the play script. When he sings about a baby smile. I love those lyrics

I know that feeling bro
Me too but does that mean we can feel?
But I miss that thunder of the low B string of Anthony Jackson's six string bass that was used in the movie version.
yes sir!!! agreed
Favorite Song~
Thank you for sharing this!!! AMAZING

Well in the end he could feel all along. Hike lamenting about his lack of emotion is whats wakes up his emotions I the first place.
RastaSaiyaman very well illustrated my brother
Man....What happened to Black Music?
+mrincrediblenjyadigg "Man....What happened to Black Music?" Maybe some smart people figured out that music doesn't have a race?
+kumada84 shut up
+Joriah Fleming Well. You sure told me.
Stay in school.

kumada84 music is universal but it does have a race and culture. PERIOD
Yes....
And that's why his version was good, his version was sung by a tin man who was rusted solid, Russel's croaky voice fitted that to a T.
i may be here from nas but damn this is amazing
TimeIsIllmatic what song did Nas do with this sample?!?
@@Alluponit31 surviving the times-nas
Poor old tin man.
Wiz 2020 on 3
got that right
Insane clown posse sampled this in 1990 -life at risk
Good song! I was just wondering if anyone knows the name of the instrument you can hear at 0:24?
that would be a vibraslap!
Given when this was made, it could be a wood and metal guero (not sure about the spelling).
+linnea nilsson Tiffany is right, it's a vibraslap.
1:27
D minor
He ruined this arrangement
Think the Nipsey Russell version better?
The untrained ear loves this song down. Plus saw it performed live over 40 years ago on Broadway. Simply a treasure. ❤
