I personally have to text and/or phone call prior to the first date, when dating on the apps. Especially phone call, you get to hear how the person sounds and how they communicate. As a guy, I don’t match on every right swipe but I do pretty well. I can easily forget or lose interest in person if I don’t have some sort daily or every other day convo, prior to the first date.
