I've now owned the XM4s for a year and a half, and they are by far the best noise cancelling headphones I've ever used. But above this, the best thing about them is I probably use them for 4-6 hours a day, and I really only find myself needing to charge them once, maybe twice a week! And they battery still holds up a year later. 10/10 recommend

@@mdesportes no, not at all! There is a video on RUclips where they talk about the x3 (x4 are almost the same) after a year of usage. And they say how great they are in that sense!
Are the XM4s good enough that I can take them on a run? Or to the gym? They will be stable and not fall off or feel like falling off while working out? Should be resistent to sweat. Also, how is the sound quality because I've heard people say ANC is the best but sound is not that great. You don't feel the base, dynamic is more flat.

That part of the video is wrong. Apple has already released a statement saying that if you “leave them stationary for 5 minutes, they go into a low power mode to preserve battery charge”.

Brought the XM4 recently in July 2022 with the XM5 out and I can say XM4 for the price is definitely still king. A great bargain with a great companion app as well. Was tempted by the AirPods Max but it was the price tag that put me off. Was only tempted because of the eco system but common sense told me Sony still is king
For me, the AirPods Max are better because I cannot stand switching devices, way too inconvenient since I have 3. But yeah, the XM5s are horrible. XM3s are my favorite, idk how people can stand wearing the XM4s, the headphone side with that thing in the headphone hurts for me. My ear must touch it or something. I’m probably just built different, worse :(
Same here . I love my xm4 and not even worth upgrading to xm5 let alone apple ipod max. I can't see myself spending well over 550 on some damn headphones that cost more than a brand new ps5

After over a year of heavy use and travel , they are worth every dollar for me . Between them and AirPods Pro I’m set . The only thing that’s better is going wired and getting into some of the high end Senheiser options .

I bought XM4s after AirPod Max release as well!
Another thing to mention is that the XM4's can connect to multiple devices and switch between them automatically. This works *ok*, but if you only have Apple devices, you'll probably get better luck with the auto switching on the AirPods. The AirPods auto switching will only work on Apple devices, though.
Recently I switched to a Macbook instead of a windows laptop, and I've found that the auto switching (on the XM4's) between a Macbook and Android, is absolutely SO bad. It worked really well when I had a Windows laptop. But it somehow feels like the Macbook want priority over the phone... When using sound on the Mac, and I get a call, the headphones switch correctly to the phone, but once I take the call, the Mac will take over again. I guess it's just another way for Apple to get you to buy more of their products...

too bad that's not gonna work for audiophiles and people willing to pay top dollar for BT headphones, Sony and Bose are titans that can't be defeated by Apple in this market segment. they should've stuck to making airpods smh
@@falsecatalyst3936 The headphones themselves are quite nice. And yes, Apple actually beats XM4 in multiple areas. First is the mic and the other is transperency mode. As far as sound quality is concerned, I don't prefer Sony's boosting base by default. I am not an audiophile but I listen to a super wide range of music from metal, rock to hip hop, classical and synthwave. And not every where do I need boosted bass. Luckily, Sony's app allow me to tweak the EQ so I have dialed the bass down quite a bit. Apple on the other hand have a much flatter sound profile and is almost as good as XM4 in ANC. I believe Apple will give Sony a really tough fight with the next version of their headphones. There is plenty of wrong with Airpods but sound, ANC and ambient mode is not one of them. Its the price, design and feature locking to Apple devices.

I’ve had the Sony xm4 for over a year and even take them to the gym, and despite the sweat they still look like they’re in good condition and have never given me any issues. And the battery still lasts a very long time even over a year later.

I rarely comment on videos but wanted to share how incredibly accurate your review is Marc. Full disclosure... I’m an Apple fanboy.
I had the AirPod Max for a month and while it was a great audio experience and functioned as expected in the “ecosystem” there were things that were annoying... 1) the constant ‘nearby’ notifications on all my devices; 2) the weight of these headphones; 3) the crown was accidentally getting pressed if you lay down; 4) the lack of on/off definitely drained the battery in about 1-2 days; 5) lack of real case; 6) no pass through; and for the minority 7) lake of cord when DJing. Also, something about the noise cancellation was giving me a headache I often needed to use Off mode instead. For the price and these reasons, I ended up returning the AirPod Max.
On a whim after watching this video, I decided to try the XM4 and was delighted by what a different experience they offer. They just fit like regular headphones feeling light and cup my ears tighter. The bass is better, and having EQ allows more sound profiles, even if you use the presets. The headphones connect just as quick, the sound is spectacular, they’re comfortable and the battery life is superb. I often go 7-10 days without charging based on average outside the house usage! They have a real case and a cord. 360 sound you can have... tried with Tidal and Deezer and feel meh about it.

Absolutely the same here, we’ll except I had the XM4’s already before I got the AirPods Max. I held out on the Max’s for awhile and eventually BestBuy had them like $75 off and I had $50 BB gift card. Anyway I took the plunge and while I liked them for all the obvious reasons, ultimately I kept the Sonys as well and after 3 months I decided the Apples had to go. I just preferred the sonys for just about everything. And Im an Apple guy for regular life and work. Anyway. Don’t waste your money people. The XM4s are just better.
The lack of cord also makes it completely unusable for gaming due to the latency on Bluetooth
Sound-wise WH1000XM4 has a very altered sound the bass is very altered looking at the frequency response itself explains it. Airpods max is more accurate but is still colored.
The bass is not "better" on the XM4's from an objective, technical standpoint. In my opinion the bass on the Sony's is severely bloated and unrefined, rendering the headphones completely unenjoyable for me. It's not even a fair race, the Apple's outdo the Sony's sonically in every way.

I love this! I’m an Apple user but I really did not like the price and usability of AirPods Max. Like sure the quality may be good, but I’m a college student, I don’t have that amount of money just to worry about the flimsy mesh breaking or the cups cracking in my backpack. I have been looking at XM4000 for awhile now, and I’ve watched many reviews just to make my choice, and this video was the tipping point. Some other reviewers are rich Apple heads that were praising the airpod maxes, so I got worried for a second. But yeah finally decided what I’ll treat myself with for my birthday

@@superidol238 English is not my first language, so my word choice is probably not fitting. What I meant by that is that the headphones, while high quality, are quite fragile. I’m not worrying about dropping a pair of Sony’s or putting them in my backpack, because they’re made for traveling and are not easy to break. But AirPods max? That mesh will rip if not handled carefully, and those cups will easily scratch if put on the wrong surface or with other objects.

That really was one of the best product reviews I’ve ever seen. Intelligently and clinically put together. Expertly constructed. I wasn’t even considering buying more headphones, but it caught my eye because I have a pair of the absolutely fantastic Sony WF-1000XM3 wireless earbuds which I’ve just been blown away by. I don’t need cordless headphones too. Don’t make me want them. Don’t make me want them. Please don’t make me want them.

Interesting. I also have the 1000XM3 earbuds and because I have had such a bad experience with them, I am very, very hesitant to get the XM4s. Honestly they’ve made me question buying anything at all from Sony. The last year or two I’ve had them, I have constantly regretted not getting normal AirPods, and I don’t want to make that same mistake with over ears.
I’ve been mainly using Hartman Kardon NC’s for the last 6 years or so and they starting to crackle but they’re also metal and quite heavy so I’m not sure the AirPods will be an issue for me there. Though I primarily listen on my iPad and only when travelling, I do occasionally like to use headphones on my windows PC.

I watched this video a gazillion times while deciding between Airpods Max and Sony XM4. As a matter of fact, this video serves an extremely good review of the XM4 itself. My XM4 arrived today and I couldn't be happier.
Although, I'm heavily invested in Apple's ecosystem and I'm an Apple fanboy but I'm happy that I came across this video. Well done sir, you have earned yourself a loyal subscriber - keep on publishing quality content!

Out of the case, not on the ears, it takes 1% battery every 24H. Also how do you suppose it detects when you put them back on if they’re powered down?

@@2youn8 -- Within 2 weeks of shipping there was already a 3rd party company with very nice case options. Apple doesn’t need to do everything themselves, they build ecosystems.
Either a new case or a new Airpods Max without needing this case. Apple had already planned this which is why they released this shit case. Just a way for them to make more money 💰

Great review - i did what you mentioned and bought AirPods Pro for mobile use and for transparency mode, and then the XM4s when using my laptop or when travelling. Still much cheaper than buying one AirPods Max!

Apple actually originally wanted to make a helmet, then they realized nobody would pay $550 for a helmet. Hence the birth of air bunker max.

The saddest thing about Apple is, they can sell literally shit and people still buy it. This airpod max sold out almost immediately after released. Don't get me wrong, I do like some of Apple products, but I'm not gonna blindly love and bought everything they released. Unfortunately some people did and that's suck.

The Apple sheep thing came from Apple’s strong reputation of releasing something with confidence it will work well and provide a great experience. With price thrown into the mix that is a different topic due to what people value. Know one is forcing anyone to buy Apple products, it’s up to the consumer. Clearly Apple is doing thing right. Open yours eyes. Why do you feed off negative energy about a company. At least Apple cares for your personal well being unlike every other product company right now. Do you know what is happening to your privacy these days?
One word: ecosystem.
Apple locked all of its users inside its own ecosystem, so sometimes they’re almost forced to buy Apple products. Have an Apple Watch? You need an iPhone. Have AirPods and want spatial audio? Apple only again.
Also, Apple products look and feel “Apple”. You can take a look at the bezel and go, Oh, that’s iPhone! And some people want that recognizability.
I have the Airpod max and I returned my xm4 after trying out the AirPod Max. The sound is much clearer and nicer than the xm4. And I am not even an Apple fan.
Im in the apple ecosystem, I have Airpods and AirPods Pro. I also got the Sony XM3 and have NO desire to get the AirPods Max. The XM3 is the best pair of headphones I’ve ever had and if I replace them it will be with the XM4.
I highly recommend not "upgrading" to the xm4s. I have had them for about 6 months and have had significant issues with them. They have a sensor in the earcups that auto turn them off if you take them off. The only problem is, is that I often wear with one earcup off so that makes them auto turn off after 15 min. Now its gotten to the point where it won't play at all with one earcup off, and just recently it started shutting off randomly with both on. This is all with a full charge or close to it. The sound quality is the same as the xm3s. So basically there are no positives to switching.
@@TheNeighborNicky I have the xm3s and Sony did an update without me knowing and they broke the noise cancelling (whole point of me buying them) and they’ve still not fixed the issue 7 months later. Time to upgrade to AirPods max I think

The Sony XM3 have slightly better sound cancelling capability than the XM4. This is especially noticeable with sounds that have loud base like that of a jet engine. The audio quality between the both is same. The things that would matter getting an upgrade from XM3 to XM4 would be for a better experience in mic quality, proximity sensor, the ability to pair to two BlueTooth device simultaneously and Bluetooth 5 which has lower latency than the XM3s BT 4.2. But on the other hand, no benefit in sound quality and noise cancellation.
Same here too, my dad works at apple (yes I’m 14 don’t murder me) and I have first gen AirPods and the pros, but this time I’m buying the max for driving or at home or even traveling! But for more on the go stuff I prefer the pros.

I am an apple fan but that doesn’t mean that I had to close my eyes and purchase whatever Apple decide for me. As a consumer, I believe we have to enforce the companies to listen to us not the other way around. AirPods Max is not worth it in my opinion too. I easily can effort to purchase it but WHY? we as a consumer must show the companies that they can’t take advantage of us therefore with AirPods Max, Apple took advantage because as you said” People line up to get?????? And the companies do whatever to bring them my profit. I already purchased my Sony 1000 MX4 and I am very happy! Thanks again Marc! Cheers

I got the XM4. They are good, really good. Combine it with an equalizer so you can balance the sound just to your taste + if you use it on PC, get a software amplifier, i use FX sound for example. You get the best out of your headphones that way.

The spatial audio would be great for movies, tv, or gaming at late night in the theater. The theater has huge speakers and a sub that weighs about 200 pounds. So obviously watching anything late wakes up the entire house even on medium volumes. The spatial audio of good would be a great solution.

I'm very deep into the apple eco system but in this case I just bought the XM4s yday. Now that I watched this video your points validated my decision even more. Also what I heard about the Airpods and their problem with condensation inside the earcups is a big nono for me. But most important for me is the ability to travel with the XM4s while I can see the airpods to be such a pain to travel with.

About transparency mode. Maybe it's just me, but I just take my headphones off, because back in the days there was no such feature and speaking to someone when they had heaphones on themselves was a lack of respect to the person talking to you.

Haven’t had the opportunity to try the maxes! I own both the xm4s and AirPods Pro! I agree that buying these gave me the best bang for my buck. I’m a musician myself and I the EQ feature definitely sold me! Sound quality is definitely subjective in many aspects!

@@Jabber-ig3iw No but I have the ABILITY to without putting it in a special case. The phone is something I use constantly all day because it's a phone. Means of connection to the outside world and all that good stuff. Headphones are used here and there throughout the day but not constantly. Would be nice to not have then be on the entire day because they'll likely spend half of the time around your neck or off entirely not being used.
They turn off after 15 minutes of leaving them out… and even that 15 minutes of them being on uses barely any battery

I wear my xm4s for around 8 hours a day, get kind of sweaty after 3ish hours and need a break. The ANC is an heaven-sent, helps me concentrate during studies, and sound quality is amazing.
I Have the xm3 and use the hand over right cup feature and it still plays your music but lower then immediately resumes back to normal audio. I love the bass as well, insanely powerful. I use the mode “exited” and it’s perfect.
I’d rather just pause my music (usually podcast actually) so I don’t miss anything (yes even if it’s a song, I usually don’t want to miss some of it) and then click the sound control button. I have the XM4’s, and like him, I usually just rather take off the headphones, let my ears breathe a little anyway

Had an opportunity to use AirPod Max. Nice. Then I bought the XM4 - and was blown away. Love the sound - nice solid bass and there’s an equalizer in the Sony app that allows pretty decent fine tuning. So, I’m in complete agreement with everything in Marc’s review. The Sony XM4 is just a better machine. True, Sony tansparency isn’t very good at all, but I always remove my phones anyhow. Price point was important too. I bought AirPod Pros. Kinda achieves a nice balance.

Maybe for iphones and apple devices APM is the best . I have both xm5s and APM , but the airpods max is phenomenal in my iphone . The main thing with xm5 was , it’s not loud enough . APM is a perfect blend of everything.

The part about the active noise canceling acting weird…when you lean forward the sound comes in more…that’s a design flaw due to the large cup size of the headphones.
When you lean forward and keep your head level your jaw bones changes position breaking the seal of the cups making the active noise canceling sound like it’s doing something when it’s not really. Sound is just leaking into the cup.
That’s why most headphones use a moral oval shaped cushion and not as rectangular as apple. The edge of the cup actually sits on the edge of my jaw bone rather above it.
For an experiment sit next to a loud fan with them on, tip your head to the sky, then down to your chin and notice the difference.
I’m surprised apple hasn’t come up with interchangeable cushions of different sizes for the AirPod max yet.
I’ll be honest I might not watch all your videos, but I enjoyed this thorough review of both these items. Take my subscription.

• Better sound than the XM4’s (Mostly relating to sound clarity over other diagnostics)

• You can charge the APMax while it’s in the “case”, whereas you can’t do that with the XM4’s

In general, the Airpods Max are not marketed to compete with the sony xm4’s or the bose 700’s. The average person who isn’t an audiophile would get much better value out of the bose or the sony’s. It’s even harder to say that an audiophile would _ever_ want the airpods max when there are much better sounding “audiophile” headphones for much cheaper, not to mention the lack of USB-C or aux. It’s difficult to gauge who these new apple headphones are really marketed toward.
If you care about pure ANC sound quality you're going with the Bowers and Wilkins PX or PX7/ B&O H9 3rd gen or H95 anyway. You know the engineers/companies who actually make extremely high end audio unlike Apple

Great documentary, thank you very much.. Makes me glad I ordered the Sony XM4 yesterday. My one son is an Apple supporter, my other son has the Sony MX4 and says they are the only way to go. He says they are the best noise canceling ear phones out there. Glad you mentioned the comfort. That is very important as well, and it is not an enjoyable experience lugging a heavy uncomfortable pair of ear phones around when you are trying to have an enjoyable experience. So, as you say, considering the price, the Sony XM4'S are a great way to go. So glad I took that route!

Great review. Bought AP Max as a current owner of the Sony XM4, after 2 weeks and having to purchase a third party travel case… there’s literally no justification to keep the AP Max. The “case” it comes with is god awful and the lightning port makes no sense. While Apple has lightning in a bottle with the regular airpods, these headphones need to be perfect for that price tag.
A great third party case is $25. For me, the difference in the sound was worth the difference in the headphone price and an inexpensive case.

If you have Apple products, do yourself a favor and stick with the AirPods. I own both AirPods Pros & Max and it's so easy switching between three or four Apple devices; I just have to put on my AirPods, and it literally auto-switches to the device I'm using at the moment, no clicking settings or anything. With the Sony XM4, it does work with two devices at the same time, similar to AirPods seamless switching. BUT when you toss in a third or fourth device, it becomes a hassle, gotta go to Sony App, disconnect X device and connect Y device. And then you forget which one is connected and then you gotta do whole thing all over again.
Also, the transparency on AirPods Max is not even close to what the Sony XM4 offers. The XM4, I can’t hear anyone talking to me with Ambient Sound 20, and low volume music; people have to tap me or wave their hands to get my attention. With AirPods Max, I can hear people talking on Transparency and mid level volume on my music.
I do agree with you. If you have more than 2 devices that you switch between, the magic of the apple ecosystem may make it worthwhile. And the transparency mode on the max is the best implementation I've ever seen/heard/used
Well it's not fair to compare the easy connection between 2-4 devices with Sony while using "Apple" products. Try switching Airpods Max from Android to Windows. In the end, if people who is deep into "Apple" Ecosystem then Airpods Max is better for them. For everyone else Sony might be the better choice, unless they want to spend more to get into Apple ecosystem

I honestly don’t like the Pros much when spatial audio is off, but they’re nice when special audio is on. Overall sound quality of everything I’ve tried recently, though, is clearly inferior to the B&W P7Ws I got a few years ago. I’d love something with more modern Bluetooth, but I want the sound quality to be high, too. I’ve loved wired Sony headphones like the 7506 and 7509 used for recording but not he Bluetooth ones too much, but haven’t tried the very latest from Sony yet. Have to find a place to do it!

As a huge user of many of Apple's products (Macbook pro 16, Airpods Pro, iPAD Pro 11/2TB/Cellular 2021, iPhone 12 Pro Max etc), this was a fair review. I personally have the Bose 700 (purchased prior to the arrival of the Airpods MAX), but in this instance, I would have chosen the XM4s, hands-down.
Transparency mode on apple is great! I love them on my AirPods Pro, I sometimes put music on low and transparency and it makes for nice background music in life, you can really have conversations with them on

well, I’m a sound engineer and musician and own a bunch of good heaphones and preamp for work (and pleasure).. sennheiser hd650, ollo s4x, dt990 … neve preamp.. and I buyed recently a airpod max… it’s the most enjoyable experience I ever had to listen to music, the sound is true and defined.. I think a lot of people have a wrong idea of what good bass is.. the airpod max is not bass flatering, if the mix has huge bass it will translate, and if not this will translate too.. I find the bass information very true and very articulate… the soundstage is incredible and as said in the video the instrument separation is unheard to me… Just my opinion, to me they are worth the price.. And in bonus you get dolby atmos sound experience pairing them with apple tv… and it works so well ! the sound is huge.. so good times we are in tech-wise..

Hey there, just wanted to note there is some “hidden” sound profile options in headphone accessibility
And transparency control unless it’s disabled on max’s, to add to this on the AirPod Pros you can actually boost the transparency as well as reduce it so boosting it above normal level, also if you have for instance damage to one ear you can adjust the balance of the transparency, it’s very good, so if works on Max then this makes transparency even better

To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.
Finally... ive been looking for a Sony M4 vs Air Pod Max review... thanks for sharing the most unbiased review on these headphones that I've experienced. I recently purchased the Sony M4's and they are outstanding in sound and usability... definitely was intrigued to see an honest breakdown of the Air pod max, thanks for sharing! I think I'll hold on to my M4's after this review... thanks!

Talking to someone while keeping your headphones on is probably the douchiest thing ever
The point of keeping the headphones on is to _not_ be talked to. Of course if I am shopping will sometimes just put 1 earphone behind my ear, but if it is quiet enough around I can still hear fine even with ANC on I dont really bother. Especially during winter. My XM4s serve another purpose at that time of year of keeping my ears nice and warm.
Sadly tho. Especially if you have transparency mode or is comfort to leave the headphones on or in your ear but I agree it is disrespectful
Thank you for such a thorough and thoughtful review! You sold me on the Sony's. Only suggestion I have is to lose the looping music that runs through most of this video. It's not that it's bad music, but it's so noticeably on repeat and at a slower speed than you speak. When listening to you, I found it difficult to concentrate on your voice because the music is about the same volume as your speaking and the speed difference pulls me in two listening directions. Obviously, I'd rather listen to your speaking! :-) This almost made me quit halfway through what is otherwise fantastic content and production values. Thank you for your efforts here!
