We get asked all the time about our main guitars, so this video introduces Dan’s new Fender Custom Shop 1952 Heavy Relic Telecaster to the TPS Family… compared of course to Dan’s NOG (Number One Guitar), Ol’ Red.
Ol’ Red really is a spectacular guitar - a Fender Custom Shop ’63 Telecaster that Dan has had from new. It’s done a lot of gigs. The question on everybody’s lips: how do they compare in sound? Let’s find out…
    The new guitar is…
2017 Fender Custom Shop 1952 Heavy Relic Telecaster
Ash body in Heavy Relic Butterscotch Blonde
Maple neck with ’65 Strat ‘C’ shape
    51 Nocaster Relic neck pickup
    51 Nocaster Relic bridge pickup
Medium jumbo frets on a 9.5-inch radius ’board

I was completely astounded at how different Red sounded in Mick's hands vs. Dan's. Wow. That was the best demonstration of "tone in the fingers" that I've ever heard, and it was a single chord.

Man, this episode was fascinating on so many levels. The Teles both sound awesome in their own way and to learn of the construction and design refinements between the '52 and '63 models are incredibly interesting. It's also fun to see Mick following Dan's shapes and licks (a scene I've witnessed in countless writing sessions) but also how relaxed the musical simpatico is between the both of you.
And oh boy, that Analog Man Sunface...I could listen to that hazy sparkle until the cows come home. It sounds like the sun feels on the back of your neck on a summer afternoon.

I bought my first Tele aa few weeks ago. I absolutely love it. Purely by coincidence, it’s exactly the same spec as Dans 52 except is relic rather than heavy relic and it’s a nocaster. Same 65 C neck, same pickups, same woods, same odd dull patch on the pickguard! I had to look twice at Dans to spot differences. Great great guitar, and instantly recognisable Tele tone. The only time I’ve instantly loved a guitar without needing time to get used to it.

Red is a very special telecaster. I've heard plenty that sound like the ash-body custom, and it's funny because even the cheaper Am Std telecasters can get in that ballpark. As for Red, I think acoustically it rings pretty loud, and the different saddles and the rosewood board are the biggest reason for them to be closer. In general hardware can make a pretty big difference in the sound of the guitar, wood, not quite as much. That being said, I find the fretboard to make a huge difference in some of my favorite instruments.

    • @JELIFISH19
      @JELIFISH19 6 лет назад +2

60s Tele pickups are very different than 50s. Same goes for Strats. I think both sound exactly what they should sound like. There's a video of American Vintage guitars on Guitarist. The differences between the 64 and 52 are pretty much the same differences shown here. The same is true of American Original videos on Andertons. Most Telecasters are designed after the early 50s. Most aftermarket pickup builders don't even make 60s Tele pickups. Everyone thinks a Tele should sound like an early 50s. I thought that too until I played a AV64.

Great stuff, guys. I also have two Teles: an original ‘53 and a ‘96 (Cunetto) Relic Nocaster. Both fab guitars but quite different in both sound and feel. The ‘53 is raw, twangy & yet darker than most folks expect. The blackguards aren’t as hifi as later Teles. Soft V neck, unusual for a ‘53. The Relic has a bridge pickup wound with 43 gauge wire (the hotter early sound Mick mentioned) and is a rowdy rocker. Slimmer, flatter neck. Been looking for ages for a rosewood board Tele to complete the set.

  • @bradallen5571

I've just acquired an new Tele that I like very much. An ash (nicely tinted) body with maple fingerboard and black guard. I named her "Sweet T". Being from the southwestern US it's a play on our favorite beverage "sweet tea". I think it's much more clever than the name of my other Tele which is "Yellow". Naming guitars is a very important ritual evidently. Best of luck in finding the perfect moniker Dan. And as usual, a fascinating show.

Thanks guys! I love how similar and different the guitars sound. I sold my staggered rosewood Tele years ago after playing a Nocaster at the Dallas Guitar Show. It was the Tele I heard in my head. I built a swamp ash Tele with a Duncan Antiquity flat pole bridge pick up and that’s the sound for me! Much more spank and cut. I love Red, but I agree with Mick 100%. That new Tele is happening and gives you room in a dynamic band. Spot on with the Ted Greene comments too! RIP to the GOAT when it comes to guitar harmony. This episode was so splendidly nerdy.

Great episode guys. As fascinating as the difference between the guitars is, the amazing thing is how, when you swapped instruments, the maple Tele in Dan's hands sounded more like the Red Tele. I always knew that much of the tone is generated is generated by the hands, but that was an astounding audible proof.

The middle position on the relic sounds absolutely stunning, but there's so much variation to be had by tweaking the pickup heights. I've done the same to my own tele, which did sound a bit flat. Once I spent some time with a screwdriver she came to life. Perhaps the relic will do the same?

I have a 1975 rosewood fingerboard tele. I love it. I just sold an American vintage reissue 1952 tele. My dilemma is, should I get another mid 70s rosewood fingerboard tele, or should I go for a custom shop 59 or 63 rosewood board tele. I used to own a 1959 back in the mid 80s. I sold it to help with the purchase of our first home. Best wishes, mates.

If you want to compare 2 telecaster you have to raise pickups untill that 52 has the same volume power as the red one on both pickups. Than it would be fair comparisson. All 2017 CS Telecaster come with very low setted pickups. Nocasters come to life only close to strings. Especialy the relicked ones, they have treated pole peaces , which takes some power off the magnet. And they sound weak in low position.

As good as the ‘52 RI sounds the ‘63 still has it for me. Not that Y doesn’t sound great, it does.
However, the real joy of this edition of TPS is to hear you two play. You really do rather well. You two and Mary Spender should make a record.

I believe very early tele (esquires broadcaster nowcaster and 52-53??) tele were wound with 43g wire on both pups- this of course does take off top end and makes the guitar more middy. I love the white guard era when they went with the 42g heavy formvar on both leading to a more mid scooped spankier tone
I think also the earliest had A2 or A# (again-can'r remember which) and the later 50s had the A5 which also lends to the mid scooped sound.

I think a lot of that mid-range difference is attributable to the titanium saddles. Red has that slightly reduced initial attack, but more rounded decay that Ti saddles seem to promote. A more 'piano' like quality if you will.

I agree with you about the finish. I love guitars with a very thin nitro or oil finish. I love how it feels to the touch. And I also have the feeling that it sounds different. That's why I have the older and "cheap" Worn Brown and Tribute P90 Gibson Les Pauls. I like them much much more than the "fancy" standards with high gloss finish. I mean, yes, a flame maple top looks awesome, but feeling and sound is more important to me than the look.

See I feel like there’s a harshness in the tone range of the red one. But I own two teles and both you have to adjust the tone knob to roll off the harsh edges..
Led me add both of mine are MIMs. One is a 92 and the other a 97. The 97 has the mini neck humbucker. Pretty much stock. I would not change anything on them. Though now I’m going to lower my single coil a tiny bit to see if I can get that sweeter sound they had at first before they raised the pickup.

Nice surprise on a Tuesday guys. I really liked the Blackguard on the cleaner sounds; much less bass and lower mids. Red kicks Black's butt however when "bringing forth the rock", but the blackguard would probably sound really good in a live mix especially with a mid focused amp. Nice playing at the end by the way Dan :-)

I've had a 51 Nocaster relic for about 15 years and it's my number 1 guitar. I literally played it for 5 minutes and bought it on the spot. The Nocaster bridge pu is my all-time fav pu. What is the difference between the Nocaster and the 52 relic? Neck profile? My Nocaster neck is a baseball bat, which I love.

Sounds to me that the maple board sounds louder in the upper mids, while the rosewood board has a bump in the lower midrange. Or maybe the blonde is more scooped in the lower mids.

Hey guys would have been useful to get your opinions on the sound of the guitars unplugged (I know the sound might not have recorded well) but I've got a tele that is so lively unplugged it sounds almost semi like. I bought it having tried three identical guitars years ago but two of them were dead compared. Definitely makes a difference to the sounds when amplified.

@@mseabs741 Oh crazy, I was just on the fender custom shop website, that's what they look like but maybe they are actually MIM. I have about a 2005ish 52 hot rod reissue with the Seymour Duncan mini humbucker in the neck. Had a tech immediately replace the bridge with a lil 59 and push pull pot for playing covers. I assume there was some resistors originally in there. Still trying to find the correct bridge pickup specs (its 7.7k flat pole black rope) but also the wiring diagram to bring it back to original. Currently though there is a Rumplestiltskin 11k 1950 black rope bridge in there. Might try the original again as it'd be closer to Dan's ol red. Want more of a rock tone but that clean chime a low output gives lol.

I'm just wondering if the pickup height settings were Identical. Both sound great. I guess it depends on which is your cup of tea. Love this video! Oh, okay. I wrote the first half of this comment at about 10 minutes into the video. Later, they adjusted the Black pickguard's bridge pickup. Just what I expected if they were both similarly set. What a stellar example and a lesson to be learned about pickup adjustment! You have to fiddle with your adjustments to find the full potential of every guitar. Name suggestion for the '52, Marilyn. (as in Monroe)

One observation about Fender CS instruments:
I owned two '62 Reissue Jazz Basses, made in 1989, one serial number apart, built by the same luthier (according to the name in the neck cavity.)
I still have one. Sold the other.
They sounded completely different! I got "my sound" out of the "keeper", but no matter what I tried, I couldn't get the other to sound or feel the same.
I have absolutely no idea why they were so different...

It was great to watch Mick have to work so hard to play Dan's licks...it goes to show how individual we are as players. It's so difficult to mimic not only another players sound but also the nuance of their unique style. I feel better about my struggles to play like my heros! Also, the best comment was Mick about his strat being played through a Klon and his 100 watt Two Rock to sound like Dan's red tele. You can listen to youtubers demo petals, amps and guitars but it will never sound the same for you in your home or studio. Every piece of gear is unique for you as a player and your rig. I understand this now and put every gear demo I watch in this context.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  6 лет назад

That’s great! It’s exactly the point. The tone isn’t solely in the gear and it’s not solely in the player. It’s in the connection between the two - that’s where sound and great playing comes from in my opinion. One of our main goals with TPS is to help everyone discover their own happy place, rather than saying this or that is ‘best’. Understand what works for you... the result is better tone and better playing. Cheers!
