Well now, THAT was cool! Thank you for your creative efforts in helping keep Tommy's name out there! Loved it!

At 2;10 from left to right are:Johnny Faris Bobby Tommy and Dave Brown on the right. Andy Simpson is correct. Zephyr Played J.D's on South Scottsdale Road "In the River bottom" almost into North Tempe twice in 1970-1971, and it was those two extended 12 day trips to the Valley for 2 weekends of gigs with days off in between, that involved me with them, and ultimately lead me to move from The Valley to Denver.
I worked with them to provide Sound for the vocals, as that club did not have a P.A. system. I rented them gear for cheap and became good friends with Dave Brown, his Brothers and John Faris. I got to know the others somewhat, at that point.
Candy was clearly an exceptional talent. A true Inciter on stage with a flagrant and electric presence. She was energetic and in motion posturing and flailing, to work up the audience. They became fans during their first exposure and performance! Her powerful Harp work and aggressive vocals could improvise as equal in real time, with the excellent musicianship of the instrumental quartet.
Remember in 1969 there was no shortage of amazing talent. Having someone this impressive come to town as a fairly minor name, nobody was prepared for what an amazing surprise they were. We considered them "Better" if there is such a thing in art) than many far more famed acts.
I still am not into jazz, but their ability to do jazz like improvisation in real time, but in the form of rocking heavy blues, was not really seen before back in late 1969. When Tommy would Jump into the fray for lead duties, it was like a machine gun had opened up on us from our right. We were dumbfounded to hear this amazing unknown kid who had a style all his own, and as brave as a Marine assaulting an enemy stronghold! We just stuck our hands up and surrendered to Zephyr. We were their prisoners for the gig, and thrilled about it.
The band would slow the show down to chill a bit (before burning rubber and tearing it all up again), Candy would get all low and intimate, and John would play the keys soulfully, and out would come the sax, transforming the show to another dimension. They were like 5 Swami snake charmers, with a load of hipmotized cobras swaying in front of the stage.
Then after getting us all focused again, we would suddenly feel something come at us like a 747 taking off and we were on the runway!!
Zephyr truly was a force of a musical nature. If you were lucky enough to see any of those early concerts, you have memories that many can only dream of.

I saw them about 1971 in Scottsdale AZ. What a show!! Tommy was in his prime and Candy could wail on the harmonica. Then I guess the drugs took over. What talent.

Saw them in early Spring 1970 at The Eastown in Detroit. They opened for Mountain. Candy drowned in a hot tude after drinking and doing some ludes. They had a useless manager Tommy had already left becausde he didn't like the direction the band was going. He OD on junk in Miami in 73. It really was Candy and her husbands band. Check Tommy jaming with the Good Rats at Ebets Field on youtube
