Great performance from a great group. I know that much of the latter day interest is in Tommy's guitar work, but Candy was an absolute phenom.and for me the focal point of the group. Bought the bathtub album back in 69 and still have it.
These are friends who we partied with on the Hilltop in Boulder. I miss Candy, and Tommy, Johnny, and David. Those were the best days of my life. They were kind to me, and I miss them all. You don't know what you missed !
I by luck lived in Zephyrs garage in Boulder 72 or 73. Taught Candy how to grow weed in her garden between the tomatoes. Listened to Zephyr practice everyday D
This video is incredible! Unfortunately I never saw Zephyr in concert. The first time I ever saw them was on TV on New Year's Eve in 1969. They blew my mind!!! I immediately went out and got their first album. I played it over and over until the vinyl melted. Excellent album! I loved everything they did...Going Back To Colorado... Sunset Ride... Live At Art's Bar and Grill...Heartbeat. I am incredulous that they never gained super stardom status and that their albums didn't shoot to the top of the charts. Very unfortunate that Zephyr did not achieve the status that they were so deserving of. I did see Tommy Bolin in concert doing Teaser and Private Eyes. I also saw him with the James Gang as well as with Deep Purple. He was genius! A superlative artist! I will continue to savor and enjoy every song and every album that Zephyr did.
I like the slightly abstract quality in the performance. Candy was well sexy, I'm guessing Jewish? (Ahava!)Fine artist, yes Tommy is the one who made it big.....or did Candy make it big for him? Ha, haaaa!! Good band & music.
@@euanelliott8068 James Gang unfortunately put Tommy on the national stage, which killed Zephyr unfortunately. Zephyr could have become one of the best bands in the world if that hadn't happened.
I saw these guys in Boston in 1969, opened for Led Zeppelin at a place called The Boston Tea Party, I can barely remember them but then again I can barely remember Zep either, haha!
@SabuPtolemy There was no mainstream back then, jazz was played on underground radio along with folk, rock oldies etc. I saw this band open for Les Zeppelin in 1969.
This is incredible to see. Thank you for posting. I was luck to see Tommy play at McNichol's in Nov. of '76. Got to see Candy and Zephyr later at the CU fieldhouse and at the Blue Note. She had tons of charisma and played a wicked harmonica.
Thanks so much for posting this incredible footage. The amount of music Tommy put out in a few short years is amazing. He must have been about 19 in this clip.
My brother was in to them from the beginning 1970 had there album (s) , and I listened to it over and over again it was great 👍 musicians Tommy bolin and associates all Candy was so good Great 👍😊👍. Missed out on there music 🎼🎶🎼🎶 due to whatever bull they went thur, ahead of there times in so many ways. A different time early Rock fusion rock.
This is great. Robbie Chamberlain was fantastic drummer. I learned so much from listening to him in my younger days as a drummer. I don’t know where Bobby Berge came from, but he couldn’t hold a candle to Robbie and couldn’t play his way out of a paper bag. Going back To Colorado would have been so much better with Robbie playing. Fortunately I got to see him with Lannie Garrets band before he died.
Loved them then, love them now. Saw them in Denver, Boulder and 'maybe' up on Lookout Mtn. at Sams...not sure bout that one. Big Crush on Candy...circa 1969......
Strange coincidences: On Rock Family Trees, I noticed one option for naming Purple in 1968 was Zephyr, and Ritchie Blackmore loves the sixteenth century, so its odd that the name Bolin is so similar to (Anne) Boleyn. (Also, Steve Morse / Sir Thomas More. If I find that Catherine of Aragon had a cousin named Satriani I'll know there's something funny going on).
This is pretty cool and kinda freaky Saturday night live era twist to it. Heard some of zephyr off of the ultimate album I'm really glad to see this video
Good God she sounds just like Janis. To me this guitar work by Tommy is much better than a lot of later stuff .I mean Wild Dogs is awesome for the first 5 min but after that he just plays the same riff for 2 days .I takes a lot more talent to play like this. Here he is expanding on a traditional standard and makes it his own while backing a talented singer.Dont get me wrong he was wildly talented just needed a musical mentor to take his playing to the next level which an abundance of self doubt and drugs stole from him RIP Tommy
Tommy could have played the same stuff Metheny or Coryell played, but there were financial considerations to be taken into account. In a way you're right, but whatever compromises he made had zero to do with lack of mentorship or talent. Energy, the project he had with Stanley Sheldon, was closer to Weather Report than to anything in the rock idiom, but jazz fusion, however interesting it is to esoteric fans, doesn't sell...Ask Sea Level for starters...Maybe Tommy went a little overboard in trying to be commercial; I'll give you that, but he approached mentorship like Hendrix did. The guy in the Holiday Inn cover band was as much of a mentor as Jeremy Steig or Billy Cobham . Those guys took bits and pieces from every valid player they came in contact with. And like Hendrix, Tommy didn't get great by going to Berklee; he got great by playing guitar 24/7...Without fail, the best shows that Jimi and Tommy gave were in the local clubs after the main show...I always look at the Tommy this way: are players like Jeff Porcaro, Phil Collins, Jan Hammer, David Sanborn, Carmine Appice. Marc Stein, Santana, Jon Lord, Ian Paice, David, Glen, Cobham, Lee Sklar, Jeff Beck, Mike Finnegan...Are those people really going to spend serious time with somebody whos anything less than world class? kinda doubt it
I lost a nice chunk of change locating, manufacturing & preserving a dvd of this show, but there's some great, rare stuff on it...like this. Rolling Stone gave it a great review...that and the $2 will get me a subway ride...enjoy. The only AFTER ROCKIN' THE FILLMORE footage of Humble Pie with Frampton is on it, too.
1970 folsom field boulder Colorado Freddie King played first with Tommy Bolin playing as backup guitarist awesome then Zephyr was the headliner one hell of a show one bad ass player
Great seeing Tommy play so disciplined and clear...hes great.....and I know all the locals who love Candy and i'll admit shes had excellent skills vocally but something,i think its that upper octave she doesn't need to go to,thats really distracting and annoying
Annoying vocals. Like fingernails on a chalk board. Trying way to hard to be Janis Joplin. What a shame that she sang over one of the iconic guitarists of all time Mr Tommy Bolin
back in da day....I had a nice AIWA cassette recorder....the best recording I ever made was taking all of tommys leads off albums and editing non stop.....I took great joy in eliminating all of Candys vocals out and let me tell u....it was difficult as she had this annoying way as u said BURRITO....of singing over him,,,,,,
The worst part of this band are those irritating vocals. They're somewhat reminiscent of an ally cat getting screwed in a dirty downtown New York ally at 4:00 in the morning!!! OMG, not enough drugs in my system to tolerate her voice!!!
Wow, how can I say this tactfully. There's no other way than this, song is cool, love the jazzy aspect of it, love Tommy Bolin, always have. But that catterwalln singing, sounds like a cat being tortured. She and Yoko need to have been pushed off the stage for their own good. She's not Janis, never would have been, how sad people can't find their own way and must mimick others. I understand influence, flattery, homage and all that, but that was ridiculous. Glad it's over.
Have to agree.Everyone is so surprised they didn't make it.It was those wailing, histrionic wanna be Joplin vocals that ruined the band for me(and I'm sure many others).
They prolly got stuck watching the Vu meters in the mixdown, instead of the ears. Elsewise the balance is pretty damn good for the technology of the day. She knows how not to pop the mike without a barrier too!
So glad to have found them in the late 60's. The first album was so remarkable.
Indubitably, one of most fantastic bands i've ever heard in life. RIP Candy Givens & Tommy Bolin.

Thanks for this masterpiece.
Why Zephyr never became super superstars is the biggest puzzle in the rock archives.
Absolutly agree it is a mistery
They needed to shed the sax player. He held them back. Ugh
In a documentary his girlfriend , or the girl who became his girlfriend said the female singer made some trouble in the band ...tommy left ..
