I had a motorcycle as my only mode of transportation when I was 16. I rode it everywhere all year long, so in West Virginia that means riding it in the snow. Only crashed it once when I was going down an ice covered hill. That's been 42 years ago, so I wouldn't do that now at my age.

Answering crew question answered: short answer is No… never ridden in the snow. That being said, when I wore a younger mans clothes and was learning to ride a motor-sickle…. A very experienced biker told me his definition of a “skilled biker” It went something like this: a skilled biker is someone that uses his superior skill to avoid situations requiring the use of his superior skill. I truly appreciate your videos Amanda. It is wonderful that you have such a great brother to share your adventures with. As always, ride safe.

Yes, the brushes on my 650 Yamaha were going bad. I was heading toward Fort Stockton Texas before the freeway was built. After riding with my headlight on all day the bike started running on one cylinder. If I turned off my headlight the bike could make enough juice to run both cylinders. Only used light when a car was coming.

That is unfortunate. After I hit a deer on my Honda 400 I didn't think I would ride again. But I took the MSF training course which helped me regain my confidence. I hope your brother can find his confidence again as well. But if not it is understandable. We all have to be comfortable with the level of risk we are willing to accept as riders.

While I love winter and snow, (hence my license plate, SKBUNY) riding in it is not a favorite. One late fall we were in the Adirondacks and it started to snow while we were headed home. It kept snowing and started to stick to the roads, bikes, and us! Not fun at the time, but a great memory.

Oh yes!!!!!!!!!!!! Only one time but I was with a group on a weekend trip and on the way home we were in Maupin OR and the wind was terrible so we decided we should go over Mt. Hood. Well one of the guys knew a road that cut thru the boonies and as we made our way guess what snow. Well we decided since there were tracks in the snow (no bare pavement) where a truck had gone that we should be good to get thru. Wrong hit a snow block where the truck turned around so back out to the main road where we got sleeted on going over the mountain but nobody fell down or froze to death although wet hands suck in the cold. That was one of my first group rides with my Triumph buddies. That has been close to 20 yrs ago but I think since I was kinda new to motorcycling my friends were impressed with my lack of whining and how I just pushed thru it and made it work even with cold hands and wet gloves :)

I live west of the Washington state Cascade mountains. Every spring I regularly do scouting rides to find when various forest service roads open. Generally I avoid doing much more than what you and Gray did in the video when solo. As you know some roads are not clear of snow until July. I also occasionally find a dusting of snow on October and November rides. Those rides are are beautiful.

End screen: Yes. Having a motorcycle in the Northeast, you look for any opportunity to ride. Sometimes even if there is not an opportune break in the weather. I used to take out my XT250 because, how bad could riding in snow be.... It had to be done.

OH so good Amanda and Gary!! Two things happen for me in this that make it better than amazing. First getting a peek at a little of what Western Montana has to offer for countryside has created a few bucket list destinations. Even more exciting is seeing Brother Gary step into the light a little bit. Great to see and hear him participate in the production and content. I enjoyed the narration from Brother. Now E.S.C. ? I have ridden on wet roads with snow on the sides but not legit ridden in snow. One of my worst experiences did involve a different water state. I was caught out in Springtime hail storm. Hail hurts... a lot!!... even at 20 mph. I still get goosebumps remembering the painful sting of those little ice pellets hitting my hands. Thank goodness I was wearing a full-face helmet and leathers (see? ATGATT). Thicker gloves would have made that ride MUCH better.

Ridden in snow? Gosh yes. Terrifying. Colorado mountains are famous for surprises. Many times I’ve walked through a snow bank to see if going forward is an option. Plowing through explains the two times I’ve been stuck in snow in July. And me without a shovel. Digging out with bare hands is a whole different experience in pain. LOL. A strategic retreat can be a really great idea. I’m missing my brother now. What a great adventure. Thanks for sharing.

Yaak is a cool little place. Although, all the times I have gone in the summer, it has been busy and lots of riders from ADV bikes to Harley's go there. The road from Yaak to Libby is a good ride, that east road is a lot smaller than the main road in to Yaak past the falls. Several fun dirt roads connect between the two roads in the summer as well. And yes, I've ridden in snow. I got snowed on today while riding, luckily it wasn't sticking.

Yes, I have ridden through snow. I had gone over to Camp Rilea for a weekend in March several years ago on my old BMW K1200RS. The weather was as agreeable as weather in NW oregon can ever be that time of year. On the way home Sunday, I started running into snow before I even got to Camp 18. Stopped there for breakfast and everyone told me that conditions were not any better eastbound. I had a decision to make. Go back (through snow) and take either 6 or 30 back, or keeping going (again, through snow) because I was going to have to ride through snow either way.
It was nerve wracking and the whole time I was thinking "Well, after some of the crap I've lived through, this is how I'm going to die." But, I was gentle on the controls, stayed in ruts when I could and made it through just fine. But damn I was cold when I dropped back down into the Tualatin Valley.

I live near Ottawa in Canada, but have not ridden through snow yet, We usually put the bikes away before the snow hits.

I live directly north of Montana and although I do ride in the winter, I have never had to ride in snow. Maybe wet roads with snow in the ditches.
Gary would make an excellent commentator for a nature show, reminded me of Lorne Greene. Rode around glacier to kalispell and back up to BC this year. Montana is a beautiful state.

Really great video. You've made me hungry, given me beautiful views of Montana and boosted my hopes to get back on my old V-Strom.
