One of El's finest videos. AM I RIGHT? Dope tunes, perfect close ups, the out of focus shot made my piss myself and dat intro was on fire. 5 Star Brandon Rating right there. 👌
Cheers Brandon!!
Cheers Brandon!!
1979...it was so ahead of its time. The Electromechanics is art. This put Sony on the map.
It truely was.... it was the very first of it's type... and sounded amazing!)
When I broke my phone acouple years ago, I bought a Walkman for $3 at a garage sale and used it for the months where I had no phone. I used the FM radio and it was awsome
Thats so cool man, I got a walkman the other day which had FM radio, just sat back on my sofa and listened to it, was eery to be honest!
The Retro Future hey i have e de same walkman als in de video
I have a sony walkman as well! It needed new belts so i though eh no big deal. I have spare belts and put them in. Works like new!
Awesome vid! I have found memories of using a walkman as my portable player when I was a kid. Also at 4:44 you can just carefully lift the t bracket slightly to remove and replace belts without even fully removing that pita spring.
Thanks Shawn! Looking forward to seeing your vid man!
How to Hipster.
Imagine walking around town with it hanging out of your pocket XD
I will do it.
The Retro Future I'll be in town tommorow, hope I see that :D
I actually have a Walkman one that slings around your next that I wear outside to save my phone battery and I get a lot of funny looks. And a lot of "WOoooah that's so old I used to have a Walkman back in the day"
I do that all the time lol.
I wear mine in the vinyl case it came in and wear it around town and to work and etc, and people always go nuts about it.
Big Love. I am also starting to appreciate all the efforts put into technology from the past and repairing any vintage electronics that is spoilt yet sophisticated.
Anyone notice the dead bug remains? Have another watch, see if you can find it!
The Retro Future Golden Classic as it is. My friend once found pretty freaking big black dead bug inside of a second-hand SNES. Disgusting... but what can be more classic than that? :)
Bugs are ok
That's weird ... Sony products usually aren't too buggy ...
for the battery pads, try using pure vinegar for battery acid or some sand paper to smooth out metal that might help

Your video is really great!! it gives me some hope in order to refurbish my Sony Walkman TPS-L2. Mine has the same problem, bands are too lazy too. I didn't know that I could buy them on eBay. I will try to fix mine too!! Your video inspires me! Best regards!!
Great work for reviving TPS-L2!
Fantastic! that's the first Walkman I ever brought. Thank for posting ☺
Just found and watched this video.... it was "recommended". So now it's 2019, and I just watched you repair a 40 year old walkman and restore it to it's former glory..... that makes me so happy to see! I remember those Sony's when they first arrived in ther UK back then (they were the first ever personal HiFi tapeplayers - a revolutionary new type of HiFi device); I had just started my first job in an independent HiFi shop in Banbury, Oxfordshire, and they seemed like amazing, magical devices...!
So Well Done to you Elliot for doing this...that little Walkman is a true piece of history... :-)
Me: Man! Wish I had something so cool! Sucks to be me :(
Also me: *watches this vid on a 700 dollar phone that literally does almost anything you could need as far as technology goes*
weird flex but ok
Mate the editing on this video is top notch!!
Thanks bud!
Perfect video for a chill day.
Glad I can further chill your day!
Liked that little clip at the end. 😉
Haha, was just a little tease, as other than the title, I didn't mention GOTG.
Challenge... get your hands on a Sony discman next
Challenge accepted! Let my wallet just recover first from buying this... had to sell my house to pay for this...
The Retro Future put a proper Chrome tape in there, it has a fantastic high tone that just makes you happy! ... great Walkman find! ... I’m tempted to send you some tapes, but you can’t play any of them on air... copyright...:)
I remember a very similar Walkman from my early childhood, the only difference is that mine had a metal housing and metal buttons. Rock solid, but as heavy as a brick.
I was freaking out about the intro and then outro happened OMG you are a genius !! This is the quality content I subscribed for 😄 I hope you will make more videos outside 💜
What was wrong with the intro? Haha! Glad you enjoyed the rest.
It is very well prepared that's why lol
Nice refurb job. Should be worth a lot more than what you paid for it after the belt replacement. I'll keep an eye out for similar stuff for you
The patience u have for things mixed with when i try and do this stuff my fat fingers make everything harder makes its quite amazing when you see how things can get done with determination mixed diy awesome work!
Glad you liked it man!
Games arrived! Thank you so much! Will show them in my next vid!
Just wondering where do you think is the easiest/best place to find cheap TPS-L2 style Walkmen.
Crushin it with that intro!
Thank you!
Neat! I picked up an off-brand portable tape player at Goodwill a while ago for a couple bucks to test out my repair chops and play some old tapes I have. That one wasn't quite as much of a pain as this but still rewarding. Electronics repair can be quite addictive.
Thanks man! Electronic repairs are indeed very addictive. I think it is somewhat because of how rewarding it is.
Awesome video ! 👍
Thanks my friend!
Is there a way to get this (maybe a working replica) without having to pay like 1000 bucks?
Now that's the definition of retro.
Haha, glad you enjoyed the video. Wasn't sure how people would take non gaming stuff.
Great video!
Thanks!
I have one but it does not work what do I do or should I bring it to repair it?
What model headphones are they
It's in remarkably good shape to begin with, kudos on getting one. I recently found a WM-F18 from '85, needs a 3D printed battery cover heh. Great job.
Thanks Logan! Was up for auction, but sent the guy a message and got it for a buy it now!
The intro was awesome, you should do some more things like that!
Thanks Adam, my brother filmed it for me!
Waited all day to watch this was well worth it
Awh thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!!
I know this video is 5 years old, but I am actually currently bidding on this model of the TPS-L2. Been wanting it for nearly 10 years. The one I'm bidding on doesn't output audio but hopefully I can get that fixed up. If not, I'll be happy enough to just own it even if it doesn't work
Nice video
I love sony Walkman
I have this one
Thank you
how much did everyhting cost you? Including the headphones?
I just bought one from Sendico. Can't wait for it to arrive I've also ordered belts and the tyres.
I think the design has held up well. It’s still the best looking Sony portable music player, imo
The red anodized WM-DD begs to differ.
Awesome and fantastic 👍👍👍👌
Thank you!
I remember having a Sony Walkmam. I felt cool. 😎
Is it still in stock on eBay and does it cost US money?
someone know a website whre i can buy belts?
I'd pay so much to get one of those.
I hate that this machine will forever more be known as the Guardians of the Galaxy Walkman.
Surprised the foam survived
Me encantó la intro, muy buen video 👍
Thanks!
SALUDOS.
Good vid! I always found the older models too complicated and the advanced slim new ones likewise. If there is anything I have taken away from repairing these on my own is that if you stick with sony its very unlikely that you won't find the service manual online for free (which also most of the time provides step by step instructions on disassembly) and the second is if you ever have corroded contacts just use some sandpaper on them and that basically can get rid of any corrosion left over.
Thanks for the info Tom! They are very complex inside.
The only issue with sanding off corrosion is that without the resistant chrome plating that the corrosion ate away you've got a patch that will oxidize much quicker. To really fix crusty contacts you'd have to replate the metal or use something likewise to seal it.
That is cool!
Thanks!
great job
Thanks dude!
What did you use to polish it? It looks fantastic 👌👌
Mr.Sheen!
Knew someone who had one of these in perfect condition.
Unopened, new-in-the-box even.
Think they have something worthwhile there...
For sure, Walkman collectors are definitely a thing and pay handsomely for minty fresh ones, I believe.
They are painfully expensive! Unopened could probably fetch for a few thousand!
Is he selling it?
nice job.1st scene of this video you where listening to non playing cassette
so was the battery cover fixed?
Battery cover is all good!
Would like to see if you could put a rechargable usb battery in it.
excellent video, my only suggestions would be to apply some white lithium grease for electronics to the teeth of the gears, this will help reduce the wow and flutter of the tape, you may also need to re texture the pinch roller with some fine sandpaper and isoprop just so that it grips and moves the tape smoothly.
I've heard of some chemical called rubber renew that rejuvenates rubber (of course) that works wonders on rollers and the like.
for minor jobs like capstans certainly, it's just important to avoid it wicking to anywhere else in the walkman since it makes plastics turn to mush after a while (and makes the belts lose their tension)
Thought I was watching a sony commercial at the beginning!
That intro tho
The comment beneath you is "that ending tho" hahah!
Hotline is a function I wish my headphones had though.
We're can I find a screw driver kit like yours and PS love your videos keep them up
Links in the description! Thanks man!
How do you find Walkmans at such a cheap price!?! I've been trying to find a TPS-L2 at this condition, but they're usually 600 dollars an up!
Those are the working ones, the broken ones are cheaper around 100-200 and usually (hopefully) have easy problems you can learn to fix
apple vinegar cleans battery acid leakage/corrosion pretty well, that and baking soda, just be careful not to apply it on anything but the actual battery acid
Thanks for the info!
I'll take it
I want to buy one of these walkmans like the one from gotg
Big Boss approves
I want to buy , can you sell walkman?
Use vinegar to clean battery contacts
Nothing has ever suited the channel name more
Thanks man!! I thought so too!
Sitting in the corner playing my recorder
I with you would be prepared to sell that Ssony Walkman to me. I wa born in 1979 and I grew up with Walkman's but the original looks so solid. If you ever decide to sell it, please let me know, I will use it every day as I have loads of cassettes. Thanks
If you could, because no one else will, id really appreciate a pic or somthing oh the tape head ajustment screw cover, mine is missing and fabricating one is near impossible
Questions why does it appear to have somekind of internal battery is that something that should be changed if it is somekind of capacity holder after all these years or is that something else, you really should have cleaned everything inside while you had it open and checked everything and is the stuff on the contacts from battery leaking? If so did you try vinegar, finally don't oil plastic it makes it go nasy
All I can think of is Star Lord.
👏
Pow!

Broooo.... That headphones was tooo nice pls broo give me a link to buy that 🎶🎶🎶🙏🙏🙏
Most of them are worth 90 to 300 dollars
Be very careful with oils and plastics as some oils can eat out plastics or make them very fragile and sometimes deformed over time. Sorry if I made some mistakes or if my grammar is bad. Just wanted you to know about oils. Greetings from russia! :)
Yeah thanks for the info man! I cleaned it with isypropal and wiped it all dry!
Yeah petroleum based lubricants chemically attack certain types of plastics. This is why gasoline containers have to be made of plastics that resist the reaction.
that ending tho
The comment above you is "that intro though" haha
You didn't show cleaning the wiper potentiometer on the headphone board or anything of that manner. you also didn't oil up the motor or the spinning brass pieces. this is something you NEED NEED NEED to do. the pot is for the adjustment of the speed. since you have new belts it will be very out of sync speed-wise and may be too fast.
I am still new to Walkmans! The sound is great, doesn't seem to be playing too fast or anything? I didn't want to fiddle with this unit too much given its age & price. I will be doing some repairs to a WM-3 and will try and do all of that one.
Hmmmm... I want one but I can't spend 200+ on a walkman.
I have an wm-f43
That’s the 1980 version Walkman
OMG it's so annoying when everywhere I go on the Internet to see cassete tapes I get guardians of the Galaxy in the title or thumbnail
This was made back when things were made to last
*me who cant even find a broken one i can afford* i hate money
First saw this is Super 8
Iwant it
oh.. you bought it broken and then refurbished it.
Its more fun that way!
Kinda, i bought a broken game gear and i bricked it by accident :c can you upload a video on how to replace capacitors on a game gear? if you can of course, thanks
First to like 600th!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎊🎊🎊
You mentioning in the title that this was from guardians of the galaxy is one of the things that piss me off.
Maybe you should sell this and with that money you can buy a new car. I hate guardians of the galaxy because of what they’ve done to selling prices of these things. And now because of that, if I want one of these which I do, I have to pay on average $2,000. So yeah, not happening.
3rd
Thanks man!
Plz do give away
Not of this!
