    I've gotten several comments saying there is nudity in the first game. This seems to be a regional thing.
    Here is the PAL version, boobs and all:

    Here is the NTSC-U version (the one I grew up with and played for this review.) She has a bikini now:

      Let's see, thinking purely of PS2... Dark Cloud/Chronicle would be cool to see covered. That's the only PS2 series I could think of, but for standalone games, I would also suggest Eggo Mania, Malice and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter.

       @grinbrothers Dark Cloud is a very good idea actually. I'm a big fan of the first game, though I've actually still never played the sequel. It probably wouldn't be too challenging to cover since, like The Getaway, it was very short-lived, so I might just look into it.

    Tremendous work on this video! I for one know how much time and work goes into a project of this magnitude and collecting all the research. I cannot believe that only today did I find out that Michael Sera was playing The Getaway in that scene! I’d love to see you cover the four Simpsons Games that came to the PS2 in the future (Road Rage, Skateboarding, Hit & Run and The Movie Game). All different gameplay styles, it would be fun to see your thoughts on them.

    Man, such an absolutely great video! I grew up pretty much playing The Getaway: Black Monday and still to this day remember having to hide the disc from my parents, playing it secretly when they were home at min volume or when they were out and when getting cought, having to find it. I hated it back then, but what can you do.
    As a non native english speaker, I remember being stuck on chapter 15 with Sam, having to basically blindly navigate around the bank for what felt like years back then, only for my younger sister beating it and me immediately jumping in to continue the story and not miss out on anything😅.
    I remember just driving around in the free roaming mode, just creating my stories, getting in chases, finding secret vehicles and garages etc. At one point I even had learnt a big part of the map and knew how to navigate with Eddie, although nowadays I only remember the surrounding place of his spawn point.
    What I ABSOLUTELY LOVED about that game though from the first time I played it, was it's theme song that was acccompanied with the small tour of London in the intro video, right before the main menu would appear. I just had such a great vibe and created an amazing atmosphere.
    -shameless plug here but I enjoyed the game's OST so much that I've uploaded many bass covers on my channel of these songs and just yesterday recorded about 4 more-
    One of the absolutely greatest theme songs of all time for me, along with the music that played on the Latvian Cowboy mission etc. I just gave the game so much more character than it already had.
    There's just so much I want to say about this game that I bet it wouldn't fit into a single comment. That or my english would prevent me from truly expressing how I felt about this masterpiece of a game, all the memories and experiences I still cherish to this day due to it. What's funny is that I got introduced to it through my cousin, who had a scratched copy of it that would crash at the driving section of chapter 2. If it wasn't for him, I'd never experience this game.
    By the way, you're completely right on the Mafia remake. I played and finished it about 4 months ago and I kept thinking of how much certain aspects like some mission structures, how it handled it's world etc, reminded me of the Getaway. Another cinematic masterpiece, much like Mafia 2 which I played about two years after it's release and after finishing it, I remember feeling like I just watched a great movie. Great gameplay, cinematic cutscenes and a story that truly put you in the protagonist's and NPC's lives, made you care for them and their problems. And above all, a great soundtrack! To this day I listen to it every now and then, along with The Godfather's theme and GTA IV's theme. Absolute masterpieces!
    Thank you for this video, you did an absolutely magnificent job and you brought back so many great memories of those years. I really hope that you and your channel get the recognition you deserve, you absolutely nailed it.
    By the way, come on Sony, give us another freaking game! The Getaway 3 and Eight Days didn't deserve to be cancelled for Singstar!
    That's all, thanks again!
    ***edit***
    after watching the full video, you just solved an almost 15 year personal mystery! I remember on chapter 15 with Sam, there were a few secret rooms which if you entered them, you could use something that looked like pills or something. I JUST REALISED that the game had health packs! All these years I beat the game without being able to regenerate health after regenerating many times! Thank you!

      Thank you for your comment!

It’s good to hear I wasn’t the only one nervous about my parents seeing the games. I guess that may be something common with people our age who played the games when they came out.

      And I’m glad I could finally teach you about the health packs too. I guess these games weren’t the best at explaining their mechanics. I bet there are things I still don’t realize I could be doing in them.

    • @hephaestusofficial
      @hephaestusofficial 2 года назад

      @@LegendOfGames it's as you said in the video basically. The fact that the game has no hud etc works great in terms of making you feel like a part of the game's universe, but it's extremely bad when it comes to explaining things like mechanics, objectives etc.
      Still tbh I prefer it this way because back then you either got really intrusive huds like in many capcom games, or really badly designed ones. San Andreas had one of the best of that era I believe, not too intrusive and "in your face" but still it gave you enough info on how the game's mechanics worked.
      Nowadays though I think that we get too much info on many games, to the point that the games pretty much have a pop up tip or message for everything and leave nothing to be found out by just exploring and experiencing the game.

    • @LegendOfGames
      @LegendOfGames  2 года назад

      @@hephaestusofficial I can totally relate. I like the feeling of figuring out what to do in a game on my own (though I guess there's a certain point where a game probably should blatantly tell you about something if it's very important to enjoying the gameplay.)
      It seems like if you want games like that nowadays you have to look more on the indie side of things.

    I do love me a good game series retrospective, even for games that I have no interest in (this style of game really isn't my cup of tea, with exception to Simpsons: Hit & Run). You did a great job covering both games with a smooth manner of bringing up gameplay elements and a lovely distinct touch of numerous references/examples of other games that featured similar elements to compare too. There were even a fair few obscure games mentioned in making your points, which is a great showcase of gaming knowledge and a lovely spotlight to them.

    Excellent and detailed video; this game has a pretty dedicated cult following, and people are still holding out for a third Getaway title. Also..non related to the main topic. But heres a quick little story i had with shenmue. When i was 19 (24 now)
    I first played it on Ps4 when the game was ported there. I was on game chat with a girl a year younger than me that i met in school. and i was talking to her in a party chat as we both were playing it. In a way the game helped us bonded more through the next two weeks. (We was playing other games together and was busy with school in between) and right at the climax of the game. really good review of both getaways witch i do still have minus the maps and manuals haha yeah loved playing them when i was younger and still enjoy them now 20 years later since release there was spose to be a 3rd one although as far as we know is cancelled i wouldn't rule it out that it could come back im sure hope one day it does i remember watching trailers of games and spotting the new cars that would of come to game (this is back in 2006 now) and at time was the only game to use real life cars from manufactures that would licence them to use them in game. For example the beta of the game spose to have a jaguar xj6 as the gang car and also had 3 series 5 series astons suburus and alsorts even the new tt at the time and the mini but with them losing licences they lost half of cars the mercs were actually brambus cos they lost mercedes too but all in all the car list was mega the second one was even better with car choises unfortunaly and i dunno why the saab 9-5 wasnt in the game for some reason but was in the first im assuming it'll be licences again check out racing freak chanal for all cars in the first getaway that would of been there and also check out retro gamer boy the guy who runs it was the orignal car modeler in both getaways and that how i found out the cars missing from the game.
    But well done on this loved it and hopefully will see more and also will subscribe too see what else you come up with. but its a pitty too that manufares didnt want there cars in game.

    This game could have been great, but they dropped the ball on several different aspects. First of all they focused way too much on cinematic aspect of the game, almost completely handicapping the gamer, no map, no timer, no damage indicator, I can see why a lot of people would like that but most of us understand we are playing a video game and that these things are ok to have. The other is the story, they should have just focused on Mark and the Bethel Green Mob, the fact that the guy turns into an interactive cop drama kills a bunch of the momentum. The game had its charms but it was a dropped ball.

    • @LegendOfGames
      @LegendOfGames  Год назад

      I agree that the game definitely has issues. The second game fixed some of the problems, such as the lack of the map and vehicle handling, but then made everything else even worse, unfortunately.
      I don't think the lack of a health bar is a problem, though. I still think the way The Getaway and Resident Evil games handled this with stages of limping is pretty cool and never really bothers me when I play them. I also think the timer works ok with how it integrates it into the music. But, overall, yes, the games are far from perfect. Still, I do think they have their charm due to the unique choices they made, for the most part.

    I am tired of the standard open world system of today, which most (Tasks) are skippable but yet, you need to do most of them, like unlock map with overview 🙄, it's just there to drag out time. So i prefer the "Mission to mission" style, though i prefer a open approach to how we deal with the missions, allowing us to use the wide world as a playground to be creative with mission but extremely few games allow us to do that. That doesn't mean there shouldn't be elements to the open world, but i think most games are follow a bad system, then it's just better to have a open world for scenery.

    I like the video, a few points I would like to mention with my experience with the games, in the first game I think the European version had nudity because in the end of the first act when Hammond calls Liam and he is in the strip club in the Pal version the stripper is naked, in the end game free roam mode, there were some hidden special cars to be found and driven but none of the progress was saved and i dont remember quite fully but i think in my version of the game i had back in 2002 there was no manual, it was just a map of the game and thats all. In the second game, I don't know why the reviews never mention this but the sound design is hugely improved especially on the car and gun sounds, they sound so much better and more realistic as compared to the first game but thank you for the retrospective.

    • @LegendOfGames
      @LegendOfGames  2 года назад

      Glad you enjoyed it! I had a feeling that might’ve been the case with the strip club scene. I guess it took the U.S. a few more years to be ok with nudity in console games. As for the secret cars, I actually did learn about those in a Cool Moves segment from an OPM demo when doing research on the games. I guess I didn’t mention them since I don’t quite view that the same as a collectable. Now that you mention it, the sound quality is definitely better in Black Monday, though I guess it wasn’t something that quite bothered me enough that I thought to bring it up. Good point, though.

    Do u like the Getaway 1 or the getaway 2 Black Monday!!
    How good is the 2nd getaway game? Cuz I’ve never played the 2nd series or the sequel to this game tho!
    But, how great or good is the 2nd getaway game???
    I also have played the 1st getaway game (with mark hammond and frank carter in it) But, I couldn’t never get past the 1st mission of the game tho! I got past the driving part of the 1st mission. But, But when it comes to locking on and shooting and aim to bad guys and enemies or people in the game on the 1st mission. Man, I was so bad and horrible on the 1st mission tho. Which I got shot and killed and failed the 1st mission! Cuz, keep in mind I sucked at the game back then when I played it in 2008 tho. I know the 1st getaway game did came out in 2002/2003 but I sucked at the getaway 1st game back in 2008 Cuz, in that game I didn’t even know how to get health in the game to keep myself to not die or get killed and failed in the mission tho.
    Also again, thx 4 explaining to us or what button is how to do this and that with the shooting and locking on and this and that. Also, and thanks for explaining on how to drive and accelerate a car in the 1st Getaway game tho.
    On overall, I sucked at the 1st getaway game like big time. But, it’s okay! I also was new for the 1st first time playin the 1st getaway game tho.
    But now since in the game I did know that leaning up against the wall and resting on the wall the whole entire time in the game. Resting up on the wall is the only way to get ur health back up tho. anyways the 1st getaway game was the best tho! The 2nd getaway game the black Monday one……………… I really need to start playing the 2nd getaway game to see if I like it or not! Cuz again, I’ve never played the 2nd getaway game! But I have to get that game very soon! Well I need to buy BOTH of the getaway game tho 1st and the 2nd game too tho!!
    It kinda sucks that we never gotten a 3rd getaway game! Would’ve made the series or sequel so much better or maybe worse tho. I dunno tho!!
    But again,how good or bad is the getaway 2 black Monday game in your opinion bro??????
    Is that game like that good or is it very extremely bad like the game or the controls and the camera janky shit or whatever! But, is it that good or that bad with the 2nd getaway game tho!!!!!!!!! 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎

      I definitely like the first one more. It has a lot less issues and is an overall more solid experience that’s easier to recommend to those who can look past the dated aspects.

    This was a GREAT game! No map to ne able to truly kno where u were was frustrating! And the controls!!!...
    I snapped a PS2 controller by getting sooo MAD!!! I did the twist of it by hand n it broke. That's how FUSED I had me!!!
    The graphics were way better than GTA3 but it didn't have the great gameplay/control GTA3 had though!
    Was a good game though!

      I can understand the frustration. I didn’t mention it in the video, but there was one section where you need to slam into someone’s car until it breaks within a time limit that was driving me crazy.

    Great review ! But you're wrong about one thing : There were already naked boobs in the first game : In the collins's strip club and in the first level of the franck carter's campaign called the brothel ;)

      Someone else mentioned that. Are you based in the UK? I think there’s a difference in nudity in the US version and the UK one. I can guarantee in the version I played there was no nudity in the scenes you mentioned. They all had bikinis on.

    I hate these games. They tried to copy Guy Ritchie's films without including any of the depth or humanity that they have. They just focused on the swearing and violence. It's like they were scripted by 13 year olds.

      When looking into how the potential audience to this video may react, I actually saw you comment on a lot of videos covering The Getaway, as well as my short I put out a while back. From the sounds of it, you didn’t play the game until fairly recently (I saw you comment on one video seemingly before and after having played the game.)
      For some aspects of the game, I think it’s one of those things you need to have experienced in the context of the time it was put out, or at least play it with that context in mind. It may seem childish to some now, but I have a feeling they were the first games Sony ever gave the ok with to go all out with the language and content, and they wanted to make the most of the situation. Yeah, maybe it was a bit much at times, but firsts often end up like that. And if you compare it to how other games were handling cinematic presentation and storytelling at the time the game came out, it really was done better than most.

      How much humanity was there in snatch and lock stock? In this you do see Mark struggling with the unfairness of it all. I loved this because it did not copy the characters like the Godfather game did but it did try and make it into a similar universe as those movies. But imo Getaway is darker than the movies for sure. Even the ending of this game just still feels like no one really won.

      I think you could at this point be told to, as politely as possible, fuck off. If you don’t like the games then don’t click on videos about them and definitely don’t bother commenting as no one else agrees with you. It’s sad you go around leaving negative comments on multiple different videos about the same series. Just fuck off.

      Back then, stories had to be short and direct, because it has to send you to the next mission. Today, there is more story than gameplay and all that just to bring humanity to it.

      @@LegendOfGames The Getaway 1was released in 2002. The Getaway Black Monday was released in 2004. For their time, they were very gritty. Remember in 2003, Manhunhunt came out. For their time, especially for a British game, it was as gritty as could be.
