It still astonishes me, My Dad survived the 1st wave at Omaha beach. Carried German shrapnel in his back the rest of his life. After he passed and was cremated, I placed it in a shadow box with his ribbons and medals. Thanks Dad.

This documentary is well done- thanks to all who were involved in this project. WW II displayed very clearly the battle between good and evil. The importance of planning, unity of purpose/ mission, sacrifice, resolve, etc but above all the power of Providence- (the Allied scheduled June 5 for D-Day but due to heavy rain & bad weather had to return. Next day June 6,1944 - during meeting Gen. Eisenhower after a long pause, look up and said “ Let’s Go”. For sure he was praying the whole time). Meanwhile on the German side, Gen. Rommel thought that bec of the bad weather the Allied will not attack that day. The storm became a blessing in disguise. God works in mysterious ways. There is nothing new under the sun. Good always Win- in the END.

Actually, on the night of June 5th, Ike was given a Weather Report telling him that he'd have 24 hours of good weather on June 6th. (The Nazis, having lost the Battle of the Atlantic, had also lost any assets in the Atlantic to tell them that Good Weather was coming in -- from the West!)
Would Ike have said "Let's Go!" if he did NOT get that Weather Report?
We will never know for sure, but I think he WOULD!

There were many fronts. Germany was 50% of axis total strength, and Germany spent 60% of her resources against the western allies, but 70% of her manpower against the USSR. This is because the war in the west was for many years an air and sea war, more expensive than land war. The axis as a whole devoted just 35% of its resources fighting the USSR, and the USSR was getting substantial material and logistical support from the western allies, 300,000 trucks and 13,000 planes, for example.

Untrue, sadly. Many of the aggressors in history have been brilliant, intelligent, educated. It's not lack of education that makes for aggression, but the competition for resources and influence, competition which could be resolved by cooperation - a point of view promoted by brilliant men and women, and which has occasionally made an attempt in revolutions, only to be crushed by the same brutal force. That said, no matter how brilliant anyone is, when attacked by someone less "brilliant", or just greedier, what are they to do? Surrender? Ukraine shows that the only way in such a case is to fight.

“D” was simply a planning notation on an uncertain military calendar, an entry around which to plan an invasion. “D minus 4” was four days before the attack. “D plus 2” was two days into the invasion, and so forth. “D-Day” represented the central event itself: the invasion. Everything had to be planned, backwards and forwards, from that central event.

Not to diminish the sacrifice of everyone involved with D-Day and the Western front, but the outcome of the war was already determined before a single foot stepped on Normandy. Germany's Luftwaffe had already permanently lost air superiority, her industry was being blown to smithereens, she was rapidly losing oil supplies, supply chains were breaking down, and was already in full-scale retreat on the Eastern front. All D-Day did was hasten the war and keep the ravenous Soviets from continuing on through Western Europe... that is the story that should be celebrated when it comes to the D-Day campaign... that at least the Allies did one thing right in protecting part of Europe from the ravages of communism.

80 years on we are still being fed the fable of " D-Day won WW2 ". The Americans certainly won the war in the Pacific, but they and the Brits did not "win the war" in Europe. Germany had been defeated long before D-Day on the eastern front, where 80% of the German military was situated and was being bled white by massive Soviet armies in battles of attrition they couldn't sustain. Before D-Day the Soviets had already reached Poland and Romania and were poised to destroy Army Group Center in their summer offensive. The Allied landing in Normandy did not "win the war", but what it did accomplish was end the war sooner and save western Europe from Soviet occupation.

The landing in southern France occurred in August and the assault went all the way to the German border with very little resistance.
The Allies could have threaten German forces in Normandy, waited until they were flanked out by the southern landing forces and then landed without any opposition

While acknowledging it was an incredible achievement, I personally think that saying D-Day was a gamble is a bit disingenuous. Just looking at the sheer numbers shows that the Germans were out gunned ie. the Allies landed almost 160,000 troops and faced only about 50,000 German soldiers. The sheer volume of men, equipment, and supplies that they were subsequently able to bring into action in the many months ahead reflects that they had bottomless resources that the Germans simply didn't have.
Had the Western Allies never attacked in Normandy, nor in fact taken any further action in the war anywhere in Europe, I have no doubt that the Soviets would have eventually won the war simply by grinding down the Germans as they were doing.
