Oh, this game! I grew up playing this back when I was a kid, and it was mind blowing back in the day. The big 3 of Shonen (Jump) manga (save Bleach) duking it out?! It was the dream of every kid at the time!
I remember how to unlock other characters. You know that slot machine after beating Cell? You have to roll it a lot of times until it automatically rolls the Jump logo, and you will unlock either a character or a new stage. I know because I owned this game and unlocked everything. :v There are more DBZ characters than the other two franchises for some reason.
More than likely, the devs were given more assets from the Dragon Ball games than Naruto or One Piece, considering DBZ is the only one with villains in the game.
I remember torrenting this as a teen recovering from wisdom tooth surgery, this game was my lifeline. It gave me a chance to finally beat my best friends Naruto favs with my One Piece characters 🎉
the only thing i can say about what matt said at 18:50 about one piece is that you honestly just have to give it a chance, the designs are goofy but the characters are so fun and lovable. Goated series.
I bought this dirt-cheap in a bootleg store back in the day (didn't even come in a box, rather a paper cover with the name on it), only knew about the game thanks to an anime magazine that mentioned it along with other Naruto-exclusive japan games. Luffy was always my main, that ultimate attack just had no justice being that good to use, also the punch spam. My favourite part of the game ended up being guessing what kind of stuff I had to do in order to acquire "shonen-coins" as I called them to unlock the characters. Thanks for the memories Mat. this is a cool game.
Matt if you think Chopper has a silly name his first name is Tony and his middle name is also Tony so his full name is Tony Tony Chopper. It's cuz of the word Tonaki (reindeer) and his antlers look like they can chop trees...I thought it was cuz of helicopters or motorcycles for a long time.
As with most Japan exclusives, I had no idea this existed and it looks fairly decent, although the gatcha thing for unlocking characters seems a bit much IMO.

There were these PS2 Naruto games, that kinda played like Smash Brothers. Naruto (Shippuden) Ultimate Ninja, i believe the last one was 5 These were kinda awesome. They had cool special attacks, combos and i think they were made by cyber connect, before they went all 3D over the shoulder

I had this game at some point in the late 2000s. I think I played it once, didn't understand what was happening, and sold it. Still have the Bleach: Blade Battlers games for PS2 though, for some reason.

Duuuuuude I loved this game! It was mind blowing as a kid, I had gotten my PS2 chipped downtown Toronto at Dragon City so it could play bootleg games and this was the first one I got. So amazing, like Shonen Jump Smash Bros.
My best friend exported this and we played the hell out of it. The only things we had issues with it we had were how unlocks worked, the weird BURST! mechanic or whatever, and the Giant Jack stage… fuck that stage.
Back in the day I went into a ciber café and printed a translation of the missions to gain as much coins possible to unlock stuff, it was a pain, but still loved the game
D.O.N Is basically just a fun game and it's kinda cool and something a lot of other games that feel kinda "Smash-like" sometimes lack. Simple, not excellent but just dumb fun like the Budokai tenkaichi series. It doesn't has the level tech and polish that SMash has, but when playing it you kinda feel like the people making it were really having some fun with what they were making, kinda like with Jump Ultimate stars .
The cel-shaded models aged well, and it gives that cartoon/comic/manga aesthetic to them, even if they look kinda polygonal. In Jump Force, everyone looks uncanny because they tried to fit in a "real life" setting.
There's Jump Super Stars or the sequel Jump Ultimate Stars. Both great games just due to the sheer amount of characters they have. Shame they never got western releases.

I discovered this game back in 2007 during my time in college. I then found my own copy and played the hell out of it. A very fun game to play but is a bit too easy
Time for some stuff about this game who probably nobody would care. To unlock stuff , you need coins that can only be obtained by completing missions. Some of them are quite easy as just as winning by KO or winning in 60 secs. After beating the story mode, you must then play a slot machine that gives stuff by matching 3 in a row. Getting 3 Jump logos takes you to the bonus slot machine(allowing you to have a chance to unlock stuff), however that is impossible because the game won´t allow it,unless when the screen darkens a little and the music changes is when you can get an almost guaranteed chance to get 3 Jump logos. In the bonus slot machine the same applies (to get the characters and stages) but you have an limited amount of tries(separate from the coins you get) until the games puts you back to the regular machine. The game doesn´t exactly has the same mechanics from smash, but you can cancel almost any attack into other attacks and specials and the super , creating insane combos. However, some characters can have a hard time, since you can easily free from anything, so , not many characters have "true" combos. Entering burst mode not only makes your characters stronger , but also can change some supers and all chargeable attacks no longer need to be charged for their full effect. Also , Dragon ball characters can dash in mid-air, while Naruto characters can both cling to walls and wall jump, A personal thing that i really liked about the game is how Sakura from Naruto plays, since her version from the first series isn´t known for her fighting prowess, she instead has a Stand, much like a Jojo character. Yes , i know is a representation of her mind manifested like that but is like "yeah , turn her into a Jojo character"
If this game were to come to the US back then I would've played the hell out of this as I did with One Piece Grand Adventure. I now understand the people wanting Goku in Smash. A modern Shonen Smash clone would be sick! You got DB/Z/S/GT, OP, Naruto/Boruto, MHA, JJK, Bleach, Demon Slayer, FMA, etc. There are so many to choose from and I hope we get one in the future.
That would cool like sequel to Jump Ultimate Stars or something although FMA wouldn’t be in it because unlike the others you mentioned that’s not Shonen Jump and a anime crossover game full of series from multiple different publishers I don’t see really happening anytime soon probably be licensing nightmare. 4:00 That stage is Skypiea from One Piece. It has a massive beanstalk appropriately named Giant Jack.
The Beanstalk was a climax setting in One Piece.
There was a sky island and they knocked down a giant beanstalk to punch the bad guy one for the K.O.

The Bean Stalk was Giant Jack in Upper Yard. Maybe the least pretty place in Skypeia. I guess they needed the stage no one likes from smash
