      Don't understand why people didn't like it... I remember being amazed seeing it in Gamestop, or playing a demo for Splatoon at Verkkokauppa at Helsinki. I BEGGED my dad to get a Wii U... he didn't get it. I think I was in first grade or preschool then 😂

      @@Twiddle_things I think it comes down to the fact that the Wii U's gimmick simply wasn't as special as the Wii's for most people (which is why the more casual fanbase from the Wii never adopted it), and the first-party software from Nintendo, the real selling point for the core fanbase, wasn't at the same level as the Wii, at least in terms of Mario, Zelda and Smash. Those three I'd say are the three most important franchises Nintendo has besides Pokemon. 3d World was great yet not at the same level as Galaxy, Smash 4 didn't have that same hype-level as Brawl upon release, and the new Zelda came out as the Wii U was being phased out and the Switch was being phased in. Also, going back to the more casual crowd, Wii Sports was HUGE when it came out. People who never would've played video games loved it, especially bowling. The Wii U never had a game that could make Wii Sport's success in that area. Meanwhile, the Switch's Mario, Smash and Zelda games are some of the biggest games in each franchise's history, and even games like Animal Crossing and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (and mainline Pokemon being on a home console again) have been able to re-capture the casual crowd that attracted the Wii to some degree.

    I 213% Agree with you on the UI Design. I fell in love with the UI design with the 3DS, especially the eShop.
    I get so happy after buying a game from there, watching the stuff drop into the box, toying with the view to see where that little orange guy was, and later see it packed up into present box. And after it was downloaded... And when I open it up, it feels like magic... Like I literally opened up a gift.
    I find it so satisfying and beautiful.

    Never owned a Wii U, but I did have an og-3DS. (Along with the Wii, Gamecube, DS, etc.) before it. This video was very interesting in explaining the Wii U side of the argument.
    Gotta say, that Wii U menu is a LOT more lively than the Switch Menu. The Switch menu feels so soulless compared to both the futurism of the Wii, and the community of the Wii U.
    The Switch menu is functional, but that doesn't change the fact that it's also incredibly dull. I always liked how Nintendo consoles had personality to them, aside from the games, and the fact that the Switch *doesn't even have menu music* annoys me.
    Wii U is probably going to end up being called "underrated" in a couple years, like you say, because it was sidelined when everyone was focusing on PS4/Xbox ONE games. I enjoy the Wii U games that got ported to Switch, fwiw, they're fun.
    I think bad marketing & the general trends of the era had absolutely killed the Wii U. The naming of the console was a poor idea (I think it just sounds strange), the ads were weird; and people were generally just eating up third party games. There was a resurgence of indie games, in the gaming fandom, which didn't really make it on Nintendo consoles at the time (due to low third-pary support). If people couldn't play whatever games they wanted on the Wii U, then yeah, people went "why would I?" Especially effective if you're a kid who wants non-Nintendo games, but only get consoles when your parents purchase them for Christmas. Most people ended up just getting PS4s, building/buying computers, and then some people would buy an Xbox for Halo. If you/your family were limited on funds, you'd get whatever system can play the most of what you want, as to save your money from buying all the consoles.
    I have no idea why Nintendo just gave-up on third-party titles. They got Call of Duty BO2 & Ghosts, but that's about it. Genuinely think that could've saved the system, but it wasn't pursued as aggressively as it could've been. Unsure if Nintendo was having a huge ego of "they'll always come to us," or what. But when people are choosing systems, the factor of "what plays the *most* games?" is definitely a big reason for buying a console. And most people seemingly sacrificed Mario to play more indies, third-parties, and other games.
    But here's something I liked about the Wii U: it feels like the last Nintendo system that was "a Nintendo console." The Switch has some cool games too, but it just doesn't feel like a Nintendo system/community. It feels more like just "this is a tablet that plays Nintendo games." Which would make sense if I was emulating them, but it's an authentic Nintendo product. Which makes it feel strange given how isolated it feels from the traditional Nintendo packaging. The Wii U doesn't seem perfect, but this video at least gives the impression it was a "Nintendo console." The Switch hardly feels like one in comparison.

    • @cloudycloud7666
      @cloudycloud7666 Год назад

      Why is Personality good? The Switch should be better off without it.

    • @marikiri5119
      @marikiri5119 Год назад

      @@cloudycloud7666 I would argue about third-party support. It's not that Nintendo decided not to care about it. It's the atrocious specs of the Wii U and bad value for the money. CPU is just overclocked Wii CPU, which in itself is an overclocked Gamecube CPU, which leads to awful performance compared even to Xbox 360, meaning that some multiplatform games were pretty janky. GPU used shader set between generations, meaning that newer games couldn't run on Wii U, and older games looked as good as on seventh generation consoles.
      Not to mention that 32 gb "deluxe" was priced at 350$! You could literally wait for PS4 launch and get 500 gb of storage for 50$ more.
      Being underpowered was forgivable for Wii, because it didn't really tried to compete and controllers were cheap. It was a cheap console for the whole family to enjoy. Wii U was underpowered AND overpriced. It just didn't make sense to buy the system or develop games for it. Also Nintendo decided not to release Gamepad separately, meaning that if your gamepad breaks, your Wii U is useless. Thankfully, it's very easy to repair that thing, but let's be honest, average consumer won't go into a trouble of repairing and would buy another console instead
      Don't get me wrong, I got my Wii U recently and it's absolutely amazing
      But yeah, it wasn't that good for developers and it wasn't nice to consumers.

      @makaronishenouda6413 Год назад +1

      If the hardware was more powerful, it would have costed more and tanked more as a result. Nobody buys Nintendo consoles for third party titles, so they don't need to worry about making their consoles powerful enough to support them. Even if it would have more third party support, it just wouldn't be justified to make it as or more expensive than the PS4.

    Marketing and initial pricing absolutely killed this era for Nintendo. The unclear advertising of the Wii U as well as the high price of the 3DS in an era where smartphones and tablets were starting to gain major traction drastically hurt their potential sales in my opinion. I think that's pretty clear now with how well the Switch has done even though many of the games are from the Wii U era or ports from that time. I hope in the future Nintendo can bring back some of the character they had during this era. Great video!

    I got a Wii U right when they came out and its 100% a hidden gem. I still get use out of mine to this day. When it originally came out I was just getting into my nintendo hyperfixation and this is my favorite era of nintendo. I miss the dream team of Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Reggie being the faces of the company. The community at the time seemed closer and self aware it was starting to become a community; of course there was no shortage of drama as there would be in any online community. I was there for the amiibo hype, the last of the flashy and fun E3 presentations, the introduction of Nintendo Directs, watching new franchises like Splatoon take off, etc. I see a lot of negativity surrounding this era but it was so fun to be a community member. I was homeschooled at this time so miiverse and social media were the places I interacted with others this most during this era. Even now with all that time passed I still play my Wii U, especially after breathing new life into it with how easy it is to homebrew. Its the ultimate party machine with its gaming abilities! Special shoutout to the 3DS family too. I still play mine lol

    Congrats on the recent growth of ur channel btw! I feel it’s well deserved. I actually found you from the Android and IOS era videos rather than the Frutiger Aero one. I love all of that sort of thing, tech and aesthetics, what a perfect mix. Good luck for the future I’m def gonna be a frequent viewer now☺️

    Love your videos, hoping one day you touch on the trillwave aesthetic, I wrote a whole wikipedia for it, one of the most unique internet-based aesthetics in our history. Frutiger Aero, Seapunk, Vaporwave, kawaii stuff, one of the more forgotten aesthetics that I think deserves a spotlight.

    I was completely surprised to find out the Wii U didn't sell as well as other consoles. I mean when I was in like 1st to 2nd grade it felt like just as many people had Wii Us as PS4s or Xbox Ones. Even today I still meet a lot if people my age who used to have or still have a Wii U, but also have a Switch nowadays of course.
