Overtaking on track in the mixed conditions is both tricky and risky, but likely required, at least for Oscar. He would end up behind a Merc in that first double stack if McLaren had done things properly - he could then have been stuck behind for quite some time.

When you are only the better car across the race by the small margin with the others having good cars and good drivers anything can happen even if you run your race perfectly. Clearly McLaren did not run their race perfectly, but with such fine margin on the other cars even if they had all it takes is something tiny and unpredictable, the tiny delay to avoid the backmarker and gravel from rejoining the track at the wrong moment - anything that loses you a little time that you can't predict and suddenly you might well be behind on the track without enough extra car underneath you to do anything but push the other driver all the way to the flag (and that would be impressive with how bad the Tyres are).

    1. Pitting Oscar late
    2. Putting softs on Lando on the last stint.
Instead of making decisions based on data, they let Lando choose and he always get it wrong because how can he know what's happening around him when he is busy driving. Agreed, and while I love Lando, he hasn't had enough time at the front to develop that type of racecraft, knowledge, and decision-making that others, like Lewis have. Maybe for running 2nd or 3rd when Max was winning by 43 seconds, but not when it's down the wire. Same goes for the pitwall at McLaren too, they haven't been in this position in over a decade. Lando literally requested softs, they should have reminded him why he shouldn't. They'll get there, it's just both parties need to honestly evaluate their own failings and create a plan so that it gets better.

@@gauravmalltarlok5354yeah i was already cringing after the race thinking of all the people that are gonna say the only reason Lewis won is because George dnf‘ed. He was already ahead of him before that & was clearly showing that he was far superior in the mixed track conditions the drivers were faced with. Sure, McLaren had some blunders in there but I just as much dislike the notion that this race was mclarens to lose & Lewis wouldn’t have had the slightest shot at beating them had the strategy been executed properly.
He was so much faster in that last stint on the same, one lap older tyres & could’ve definitely caught lando had he mirrored Lewis. If you can’t see that the overall performance of Hamilton was top-tier & he would’ve been fighting for the win even without strategical mistakes on McLarens behalf you‘re just blinded by an all to familiar prejudice regarding Lewis capabilities imho.
That Merc was flying yesterday & Lewis execution was flawless bar none. He nearly had not a single mistake & clearly outperformed the Lando & co. - whether that be strategically or on racecraft. Keeping a cool head in really tense situations as these, changing conditions nearly by the minute, is what makes champions & elite drivers & lando, as much as I respect & am rooting for him, just can’t seem to stay calm & make the right decisions.

Many people believe that the soft was a bad tire to be on. However, what people aren't factoring in is that the soft tire was tested on dry hot surfaces, and thus was projected not to be a great tire in the dry. However, there had been rain for nearly 30 minutes, and this track was drying, and was likely cooler than normal, so the soft tires would not degrade as much as they normally would have. This is why Hamilton's performance was sustainable at the end of the race on the soft tires.

Whilst I agree with some of what you say you’ve missed the one vital difference which allowed Hamilton to
win. The soft tyre for the final ten laps. Pitting him when they did gave him one out lap on the fastest tyre which was the
soft. He gained the vital nearly two seconds on that out lap coupled with the 1 1/2 secs Lando lost in the pit stop. This
enabled Hamilton to get out in from of Lando. If either of those things hadn’t happened Hamilton would have been behind
Lando and used up his softs getting by or trying to. Vercrashen would have caught them both and won the race. So the
soft tyre was the only choice to win the race for Mercedes with a slower car on mediums and hards in dry conditions.
You made no mention of the amazing out lap from Hamilton which got him in front, all thanks to the softs.

McLaren needs better strategy management - not micro managing the driver but overall race strategy!

Not double stacking was the craziest. It was obvious that wasn’t smart way before they did it.

i feel like norris waits too much when pitting, it isnt the first time he goes for one more lap and it doesnt end well

Predicted that Lewis would win and he did. In changing conditions he’s the best and then some. Lewis always does better in the second half of the season, so expect more wins.

If you watch Lando's pit ovehead you notice a ferrari mechanic running out to where lando intended to turn in. He'd keep limited speed after using downforce and brakes to optimize but the mechanic running out kept him from doing so. Ferrari deserves a fine.

Mclaren keeps piping Oscar to benefit Norris, Oscar needs to qualify better and get ahead of Lando consistently so the team doesn't keep giving him scraps. Crazy they probably will still screw him in the race if he's ahead.

future is looking positive for Lewis still, he proves he can still win and Ferrari sets the fastest lap

Just a tip. Fastest lap (in a race) doesn’t necessarily mean that the car is in great shape. There’s always context and in this case it was Carlos on a set of brand new Soft tyres any half decent car can get fastest lap as long as they have a new set of softs and the big boys don’t bother to go for it using the same method of Brand new soft tyres. Race pace is king. 👊🏾

I'm not sure how Ferrari will be in 2026 but people doubting the wisdom of Hamiltons team switch should remember where Mercedes were when he signed for them in 2012. Everyone was saying he'd never win with them and that he was only going for the money.

@TheRace question. Why were the hards so much faster than softs at the end of the race, even when the softs were relatively new?
