For the second story, the whole zigzagging excuse was just that, an excuse that was made up to make the captain sound bad and incompetent. People needed someone to blame for the sinking of the ship, and all the lives lost, and the captain was chosen even though he was innocent and a victim as well

Gustav was/is a legend. Even today there is no proof he was killed so he could still be out there. He was so big and terrifyingly strong and intelligent which is why it is said he was one of the few crocodiles capable of hunting hippos. It was said he would use hit and run tactics on them, taking chunks out until they would be weak enough for him to deliver a final bite. The movie Primeval was based on Gustave.
Gustave also reportedly killed a rogue bull shark that found its way up the river. Which sounds absurd but I don’t doubt it
It helps me sleep better at night thinking the big guy just died of old age, since Nile Crocodiles can live up to 60 years in captivity, and Gustav would be 69 if he still kicking.

For the first story, ig apparently lions and wild animals were not the only ones wrecking havoc on the railroad workers. My parents are from kenya and i've heard stories about how since the railroad was cutting thru important chai plantations, the citizens would fight back. There were Kenyan archers that would be posted up in trees and bushes sniping the construction workers with bows and arrows, just silently taken them out until they had to back out
The lions from the first story are currently in Chicago museum of natural history and had a movie made about them called ‘The Ghost and the Darkness.
That second story sounds really familiar wasn’t that the backstory of the veteran shark expert from jaws?

That monologue is nothing short of awesome. It's in my Top 3 best movie monologues of all time.
There's a pretty good 90s movie about the two lions eating the railroad workers called "The Ghost and the Darkness" with Val Kilmer as Patterson, the guy overseeing the construction and then went out to hunt down the two man-eaters. Most of what CG mentioned in his video is included in that movie, like the panicking men missing every shot, or the slaughter in the new hospital, while Patterson was sitting in ambush at the old one. My dad found the movie ridiculous, but the fact of the matter is that none of that was made up by Hollywood, it's all from eye-witness reports. Wether those are true or embellished is another matter.

@@observantwonderer7401 that’s what he was estimated to be at first due to his outstanding size, but it was discovered that the dude had a full mouth of teeth, a crocodile that’s 100 years old would have a nearly empty mouth. So I guess Gustave hit his growth spurt early.
There's a channel called Wendigoon that actually has videos on a couple of these topics I think. They're pretty long but definitely worth the watch if not on the channel then on your own time.

Gustave was the only known instance of a crocodile that would go out his way to hunt and sucessfully kill hippos, because of his abnormal size, theres eye witnesses of this situation and theres videos of gustave near hippos and the hippos in complete fear grouping themselves.

Those two materials _muffle sound_ and cats of _all_ kinds are very light-footed already. Mix that with the fact that most nights are pitch black if there's no moon, and these two lions were fast learners when it came to hunting humans, and the tall grass of the savannah goes _way_ over human height in most places, and they basically had way more of an advantage than most people could properly comprehend...even me.

Yes. Nobody heard the lions. At least at first. Because it was night time and everybody was sleeping. Also, lions are almost silent when they are hunting. One could sneak right up into your tent and clamp its jaws around your neck before you even know it's there. And now you can't even scream because your throat is clamped shut. It just holds you there until you die, then drags you out into the bush without anybody else ever knowing.

The 2nd story is the same story told by Quint, the boat captain/shark hunter, in the movie Jaws.

to answer the question about how they didnt see the lions, the likely answer is that the lions didn't make any noise, neither did the humans. the lion likely grabbed them in their sleep by the neck instantly killing them, and when people did hear their screams they couldnt do anything, and no important peolpe were there to hear them out about it.

I know animals like lions and tigers and bears will hurt humans if they are badly injured because ti them humans are easy prey but the two lions don't seem to be injured so it's possible they got use to killing and eating humans early on in their life
