Agassi in 1988 was a tennis player who still had a lot to learn and that was the case in the years to come.
However, Ivan Lendl played very well on the Madison Square Garden court and indoors in general. Then in the final he would lose to Becker in a great match between the two and which could well have gone to the Czech. The shots he had, especially his forehand and serve, the elegance he had in all his movements and swings. It's a shame that he was a player so unrated by some.
Another indoor tournament that he was very good at wasn't part of the ATP Tour, I am referring to Antwerp and the Golden and Diamond Racquet Tournament that he won 4 times and for winning 3 in less than 5 years he kept it as his property. Another 4 that could well be added to the 94 ATP that he has in his record, plus another 4 or 5 from the WCT circuit, clearly exceed 100, that without counting countless exhibition tournaments with his usual rivals, McEnroe, Connors, Wilander, Becker, etc...
He only had one problem and that was that the Grand Slam finals were difficult for him at the beginning, let's remember that he won his first Grand Slam at 24 years old. Let's remember that he played 19 Grand Slam finals.

I remember Agassi was ranked No.3 at end of that year ahead of Becker and Edberg, Edberg was the Wimbledon Champion for that year. I knew Agassi was semi finalists at FO losing to Wilander, and USO to Lendl. But he wasn't really a slam contender yet and he scoop enough ranking point in small tournaments to get to No.3. Lendl was the father of modern baseline game, his power game is way above the then 18 years old Agassi. In the late 80s Lendl's forehand is regarded as the best in men's game, this match is show exactly that. That big eastern forehand was simply devastating, a real killer shots just like Graf's forehand in the women's game in that era.

Yes. I play an eastern forehand myself. The advantage is, that you have more speed and feedback. The disadvantage is the lower passing of the net.

Ivan Lendl coming back from a shoulder surgery here.Despite surprisingly drawing a blank in Grand slams in 1988 after winning 5 from 1985 US open till 1987 US open and also 3 year end masters during the same period, Lendl from here on got back to top form. He is supremely confident 💪 here against Agassi. He surprisingly lost to Becker in 1988 masters final, a match he should have won. The 1988 Wimbledon semis loss to Becker was the turning point in their rivalry mentally for Ivan. While he went on to win the 1989 Aus Open quite convincingly, the year was so near yet so far kind of a year for him and the last to an extent dominant year of his career.

He was dominant in 89. World no 1 for virtually the entire year and won 10 titles

    Great Ivan Lendl.

That’s pretty much the way that Lendl always dealt with Agassi. He had enough power and consistency to blow through where Agassi played inside the baseline. If Agassi couldn’t dictate from that position he wasn’t going to win. Not many had the ability to knock back and blow through Andre but Lendl made it look easy. It wasn’t a good matchup for Agassi but the tennis was still enjoyable because it really let Lendl take full flight with his awesome hitting.

Yep , its always about the matchup s . agassi beat Becker most of the time ,Becker beat lendl in grand slams most of the time but lendl beat agassi most of the time

He also used his slice backhand to really torment Agassi. Very difficult for a two hander to do much with that short, low ball. It set the point up very well for Lendl's forehand. Roger Federer and Steffi Graf used that play very well in their careers too.

Lendl schooling a young Andre. Reminds me when Borg schooled a young Ivan.
