    Lendl one of the greatest players ever. Totally dominant in the 80's

    Lendl and Borg were teutonic groundstroke machines. They hit with so much topspin to clear the net and made very few errors to balls in play. Absolutely incredible.

    seems like Lendl is just crushing the ball. It's crazy to think of how hard he would be hitting with today's strings and racquets. Certainly wouldn't want to be on the otherside trying to volley

      But he beat Lendl 3 out of 4 times in '85. Funny thing....Mac beat Ivan the first two times they played, when Ivan was 19 turning 20. Then Ivan beat him 6 times in a row when Mac was the dominant player. then Mac beat Ivan 7 out of 8, and 11 out of 14. Then I van beat him 11 out of 12. Ivan just kept improving, and John just kept declining. Discipline wins in the long run.

      Plus, McEnroe didn't develop his game at all..
      He played the Hollywood 'rock star' and paid the price.
      His first service percentage was ridiculous, and his 2nd service was weak.
      And his returns were too passive and he was not aggressive enough.

    • @michaelgarza8271

      Lendl said recently that McEnroe lost his level. I'm thinking of the discussion with Wilander, McEnroe and Becker. Lendl suggested to Becker that he'd never seen the real McEnroe.

      Hate to break it to you but Mac accomplished more in tennis than Lendl ever did. Mac had more Davis Cups wins and more major doubles wins than Lendl. Sure Lendl had a slight edge over Mac in singles, but he sucked in doubles so if you look at the whole picture Mac had a better tennis career than Lendl.

    • @joemarshall4226
      @joemarshall4226 5 лет назад +3

      Lendll had a better career than Sampras, too. 300 more wins, and a significantly higher winning percentage, 81.6% to 77.4 %. Although he won fewer majors, he made ti to more finals (19-18), more semis (by four), and more quarters (by four). Ivan never won Wimbledon, but did win three other grass tournaments, although he hardly played on grass, and made it to seven semifinals at Wimbledon, and two finals. Pete only reached one French Open semifinal, and two other quarters. He also lost in the first or second round at the French seven times in a row. Ivan won 94 tournaments, Pete won 64. Ivan reached the finals of the US Open 8 years in a row, and the finals of the year end championship 9 years in a row, winning five times. Ivan was great on 3 different surfaces, and Pete was only great on two. Pete chalked up half his slam wins on a surface (grass) that no one grew up on, and only played for one month a year as pros. Ivan dominated on the other two surfaces. Pete did have more weeks at number one, 286-270, but Ivan had way more weeks in the top 3 and the top ten. The H2H was 5-3 for Pete, but they never played on clay, and two of the wins for Pete came after Ivan had developed the back trouble that ended his career. They were both great, but Ivan has the better argument, IMHO.

    Beautiful Lendl forehand , similar to the Sampras forehand , but Lendl seems very side on vs Pete’s hitting off the right leg open stance . Two of the best forhands of all time , most penetrating in any court position.

    lendl = father or modern tennis....

    • @SuperHammaren
      @SuperHammaren 6 лет назад

      Nope. Possible by physical training, not the long stroke motion and taking one step back to get room for the swing Lendl used. Agassi closer to modern play. Approach the ball, not stepping back. Watch Wilander keep Lendl behind the base line with soft backspin shots as in the US open final 88 and you see why Lendl is NOT playing modern tennis.

    • @joemarshall4226
      @joemarshall4226 5 лет назад +2

      Lendll was the first to hit anything like a modern forehand. Six years before Agassi. Andre improved the technique, using a bigger racket. But Ivan's forehand was similar to Sampras's, and even Federer's (except he didn't hop like Fed does). It was the first forehand that could blow a competitor off the court with consistent raw power and placement. @@SuperHammaren

    • @SuperHammaren
      @SuperHammaren 5 лет назад

      He had a hard forehand. But he did not play modern tennis. He was the last hurrah of the old style. As good you could play by taking a step back and wait down the ball instead of approaching. As modern players do. Talking forehand technique this is another comparison: ruclips.net/video/6MBymuwSvgg/видео.html . But Lendls forehand is harder. true.

      Is that the match where Mac hits the winning shot on match point between the net post and the net, and Ivan goes crazy? I just talked to a professional linesman about that. He said the chair umpire was correct. If they don't string the net correctly, and the ball goes between the net and the post, without touching the post, it's a good shot!

  • @jakeschutz6342
    @jakeschutz6342 8 месяцев назад

    Always hated the narrative that Lendl was weak at net. Was he Becker, McEnroe, Edberg great at net? No, of course not. But those guys were ATG level net players. Lendl, especially once he hooked up with Roche became easily an above average net player.

    • @matteodinenno
      @matteodinenno  8 месяцев назад

      Lendl was an attacker and won Wimbledon as a junior. His inside-out forehand was used to gain the net by attacking his opponent on backhand side. Then, his powerful groundstrokes and the ability to close the point directly from the baseline, especially with the forehand, led his coaches, especially Fibak, to focus only on the serve, on grass, and to improve his consistency , on clay, adding topspin to the backhand. At the time, unfortunately, everyone was convinced that a baseliner had to imitate Borg. Lendl himself was not a courageous player and preferred to work on the least risky tactics.

    89 was McEnroe's best year After 1985.
    Anyway if McEnroe would hired a coach for 1986 and years After he could practice more and improve his game.
    In 1986/87/88 he took 2/3 month breaks from playing,
    Probably for his private Life.

      McEnroe dated Patty Smythe of Vandals fame around that time and when two 'rock stars' get together in the NYC celebrity scene it becomes a game of 'who can do the most cocaine.' Combine all that with Lendl's push into off-court training and it's too much. Motivation or lack thereof surely reared its ugly head. Hell, around that time I vividly recall McEnroe sipping on a can of Coca-Cola on the court during change overs. Coke still had coke in it back then(?) ...LoL...so maybe he knew something... anyways what a wonderful time to be alive. I recommend McEnroe's (auto)biography, a worthwhile read.
